When arriving from Dovje a warning on macadam that road is fully closed. Due to holiday no work expected and we continue. Construction machinery currently (resting by road) not operating and we relax.
Road nicely smoothed and hope next storm doesn't damage it again. At parking currently only us. In cold sunny morning cross torrent and up steep slope. In sun soon hot and stash extra clothes in packs.
Trail without issues and in three hours and a few minutes at the cross. Views nice and short break. Last October day so nice waste to return immediately. We agree to spice up the day with visit to Dovška Baba. So approx. three hours after leaving Kepa already on Dovška Baba. Descend to Planina D. Rožca and sun break. Descent from Planina marked to road then right unmarked. Trail well traceable and soon in Mlince gully. Another approx. 20min to start.
Nice autumn day in Karavanke.

Yesterday with Janez to Kepa from Spodnje Rute via NE ridge and via 680 back to start.
Windy on ridge, otherwise nice cool day.
Route in my opinion a bit overmarked, but ascent nice. Hiked and climbed without issues.
Good luck!

Hi.
I read that access to Kepa is also to be restricted from the Belca direction; https://www.hribi.net/novica/zaprta_planinska_pot_in_gozdna_cesta_po_dolini_belce/4596
If I remember correctly, in about a month the still accessible forest road Dovje-Erjavčev Rovt will be closed, which is also a nice access for visiting Kepa. From where will it be possible at all to go to Kepa on "our" side? Will the big shots really restrict everything for us? PZS AND PD happily nod. The mountaineering homeland is sad.

This trail has been closed most of the time since the landslide cut it. It was reopened recently maybe one or two years ago - along the road it was possible to go on foot despite degradation. Who among the "know-it-alls" could add that the trail was already risky at least at one spot due to exposure over the depth at the washed-away place and uncomfortable at several due to material deposits/breakage - it didn't bother me. In my opinion it was a nice gesture from their (PD) side to mark the parking below and open the trail. The services that will repair it have a huge job according to what I saw - the road is completely destroyed in some parts of the valley, the remedial road is already starting to wash away too ... Hard to imagine that the construction site would be compatible with hikers crossing via the mountain trail. Especially under the landslide.

n3jc thanks for the info. I haven't been in Belca valley yet but whenever I drove past I already "glimpsed" the state of the big landslide and I understand the notice here somehow, while from the Dovje side it doesn't say at all that there will be a ban on using the forest road to the confluence in the summer season...

The service road was (at least from the end of the tunnel, where the marked trail from the parking at the sawmill comes up - over the scree) repaired in autumn - so now it's normally drivable at least for cyclists. Apparently they will now carry out additional work on it, then they could open it (I don't know why they would repair it otherwise). What the condition (possible repairs) past the landslide and through the tunnel is, unfortunately I don't know.

Yesterday Kepa via Kurjeke.
Over Kurjeke dry. Below Gubno some snow tongues - I went over Gubno and along the ridge to the col, which is dry. On the ridge towards Dovska Mala Kepa some snow patches, which you bypass one or two meters on the south side (but probably all dry in the next days). Trail below DMK completely dry, some snow only then at the pass between DMK and Kepa, where you have to scramble a bit, and then on the trail to Kepa - you avoid it if you go along the ridge. Descent past Dovska Rožca.

I was last weekend on Kepa from Dovje. Slept in Austria at Berta Hutte https://www.bertahuette-mittagskogel.at/
Thrilled with the mountain and the hut. From the top excellent view of entire Julian Alps, entire Karawanks, Kamnik-Savinja Alps, what a beauty. This became one of my favorite mountains nasmeh
The trail is very attractive. Contains 4-5 short ferratas as well as several narrow crumbly sections where you really need to watch out. Otherwise similar to Stol or Vrtača.
I don't understand why more people don't go to this beautiful mountain and why it's not part of the Extended Slovenian Mountain Trail zmeden

From Dovje to summit about 1500m up, then about 700m down to hut. Took me about 5h30min with breaks. Opposite direction longer because I enjoyed about 2 hours on top in the views.

The photo is not 1% magical like Julijci on the palm from Kepa.2

This time we chose the north-east ridge for access to Kepa, in German Ostgrat. For several years we had it on our wishlist, but due to the long drive to the starting point in Austria there was always something else velik nasmeh.

We parked in lower Rutah, as we planned to do a circular route. First up the ridge to Kepa, then down the Slovenian side to the bivouac near Jepca saddle and from there back down to Austria towards the start. The entire route is marked, mostly also ridge path.

It requires experience, cool head at critical spots and some fitness. As reward it offers plenty of views, mostly good rock and great access to Kepa. We didn't see many hikers on the ridge, but some visitors there are. More in the photo story …

Coordinates of start (Spodnje Rute): 46.5427594N, 13.9416244E
Parking in Spodnje Rute, the only one despite the late hour1
Right behind the parking lot we follow the path along the pasture fence2
Signposts are soon available too. Our goal is Berta Hutte3
The trail is wide, space for a rest can also be found…4
We cross a small stream, which is certainly impassable during heavy rain.5
There are plenty of signposts everywhere.6
After some forest paths we reach a gravel road.7
We walk some bends along it, then turn into the forest.8
Up, down, left, right, but always well marked.9
Hut in the foreground, our main goal in the background.10
Berta Hütte, or rather Bertina koča. We immediately get the feeling of a real, not overly touristy hut.11
This is our direction. Note on the board: it is not a hiking trail and not (officially) marked.12
Introduction to climbing :)13
The steepness increases, natural handholds always come in handy.14
So far everything is OK. The path initially has no markings but is easy to follow.15
This is a different story. Now rocky terrain, red dots also appear.16
Steep, crumbly, caution is advised.17
A little higher we reach more solid ground, but it is still quite steep.18
We can handle this too, no way we're going back :)19
Red dots mark the passages. Without them it would be hard to find the right way.20
Second key point: crossing the exposed slope.21
Step by step and as close to the wall as possible...22
Such a passage is good 100 m long and requires full attention.23
Thanks for the markings :)24
Finally it climbs onto more walkable terrain25
But nature does its thing. There are quite a few such fallen sections of the path26
Here you can't go any other way than with the utmost caution27
View ahead. The summit is somewhere back there …28
There are really huge numbers of red dots in some places, but they certainly come in handy in fog29
We're alone the whole time, only far in the background are some Austrian hikers30
But this is in front of us. Mittagskogel, or rather Poldnik31
It grips into the rock. Now it's just enjoyable scrambling, the worst is behind us32
Well, some more walking along the ridge isn't a big deal either :)33
Pre-summit of Kepa, also named Poldnik at 2100 m34
In memory of Joseph Schuman, who built this ridge path and in old age carried the cross up the mountain too35
View back at the successors36
We continue towards Kepa37
View back38
Dovška Mala Kepa and Gubno39
Cross on the Austrian side of Kepa40
We continue towards Slovenia, where the highest point is too41
We'll descend here. Once many Slovenes walked here, now we meet only Austrians42
Koroška Mala Kepa and the path we'll take43
The chains are behind us, the passage across the narrowest part of the path is crumbling44
View back to the ridge of Kepa45
Lower down we enter the dwarf pines and unfortunately also the heat46
Cycling rest area near the former Annahütte hut47
Nearby a bivouac in alpine style has stood for ages48
Surprisingly the interior is quite decent49
At the bivouac we turn into Austria and descend along path 68250
The descent is nice, not too steep and mostly forested with lots of shade :)51
Very obvious ban for cyclists, primarily MTB. We encounter more and more of them52
Overgrown cart track where apart from hikers nobody else has passed for a long time53
Oops, I forgot about the bears :)54
Much later we reach the first signs of civilization55
Remote places, yet all buildings are neatly kept56
Our starting point Spodnje Rute, just coming from the opposite direction57
Follows the ascent to the parking lot and the loop is completed58
We walked 14 km and 1400 elevation gain. We'll come again :)59

Haven't been to Kepa for a while. Previously always via the marked path from Erjavčev rovt.
This time I choose Kurjeke. Nice unmarked path. Only... I spiced it up a bit unexpectedly...zadrega

I don't know where this name "Šetinov rovt" comes from, which apart from hribi.net is practically nowhere else mentioned. I'd say Rovt Vrse is much more commonly used, even the building at the rovt is called "Pr’ Hartman na Vrsah", so it might make more sense to correct it to Vrse in the description.
