Due to the promising weather forecast for yesterday, I set off early in the morning towards Gorenjska with high expectations. I parked in Planica on an empty road soon after five, briefly cursing the municipal bigshots who offer even a bonusvelik nasmeh; I can easily choose between two roads along which I will step into the dark night. I chose the left one; in the last two km there is some ice in places. No lights in the hut yet, I continue at the same pace on the trail. Soon snow begins, nicely frozen to my joy. Unfortunately, the joy ends around 1500m, still unprocessed, it sinks, and the hidden slab underneath makes walking difficult. I catch up with a pair of alpinists preparing to climb under the Šit wall. (Later, on my return, we meet again, this time higher - due to bad conditions they didn't climb -, they returned to the hut for coffee, then up again to visit Jalovec.) Hats off, lads!
I saw no other people except some tourists on the return before the hut. Walking in the couloir was pleasant, not much sinking, lots of snow, wide as a highway. At the exit, straight to the winter chimney, which seemed wobbly and dangerous due to snow narrowness, so I switch to the classic path to the top. But darn it. If I had all snow types under my feet today, here it was real concrete; I had to hit twice with my foot at each step so the front two teeth gripped securely. Very, very slowly I reach the ridge; fog reveals part of the wire rope and the wind strengthened there, so I decide to return. With already sore toes and calves, and palm from the ice axe, later no regret, as the descent was more demanding than the ascent. At the saddle stop, the sun appeared occasionally. I watched - if the sun hit the wall for even a minute, ice candles flew down the rocks, crumbled and disappeared in the couloir. I add clothes, put on thick gloves, tighten the helmet, nasmeh and as fast as possible down the couloir. Not frozen, projectiles dangerous only in the upper quarter, lower down the snow stopped them. Finally, I relax behind the rock under the couloir and plan the next hill...velik nasmeh

Tone, again a rational and safe decision. You're a mountaineering legend who puts safety first. Good luck and smartly onwards! jezik

True, Drago, except for the crown on the summit, fog there wouldn't bother me.
Thanks, Lino! Yes, sometimes you really have to try and switch to defensive mode. With years, I notice I'm becoming more and more of a safety guy.

Yesterday I went from Vršič along the wonderful path above Trenta towards Jalovec. 'Hands in pockets' and letting my soul graze. To Goličica, where the steep secured path begins. To the wall, you need to cross a fairly steep snowfield and without ice axe it would be sad. Warm weather and midday hour soften the snow, in the morning and with slightly cooler weather it would be hard and without crampons it wouldn't go.
To the top bp. Parking at the top still free. Back via shortcut through ozebnik, beaten by avalanche debris. Disappear as fast as possible. Not recommended. Sign it's closed still under snow.
From Tamar turn towards Black Waters, where in the gully intensive melting of avalanche debris and further across beautiful Sleme back to Vršič.

I'm also interested in the conditions for Jalovec. I'd like to do a circular tour from Trenta to Kotovo sedlo to the Jalovec summit, then descent to the hut under Špička.

Hi. If the info helps, on 1.7., on the route Tamar-Kotovo sedlo - summit there was still a snowfield in the gully between little and big Jalovec, and then another snowfield towards Špička, at the junction to Goličica. Crossing both was very demanding then.

Thanks. Just got up-to-date info from Špička that there's no snow left anywhere from Trenta over Škrbina. Lp

Hello, looking for a hiker / female hiker for around Loška Koritnica - Kotovo sedlo - Jalovec - Škrbina za gradom - Loška Koritnica. I want to do the hike in one day. Between 8.-14.8. 2025, depending on weather. (wife can't go with me because she's minding the child) Please message. Thanks! Ivo, Slovakia.

Hi, sorry for the incorrect Slovenian. I'm looking for a hiking buddy for the above mentioned trail. Already hiking in Julian Alps during vacation every year from 2013, so I am aware of what to expect. Thanks a lot for reaching out via message! :-)

If I may give you a recommendation, I think it is somewhat better to do the tour in the opposite direction. The climb from Špička to Škrbina za gradom is not something that one wishes to do and the descent that follows requires a lot of attention almost until the end.
