Why is Golica bald? The reason is the frequency of snow avalanches. They carry away all possible small trees, bushes etc. Most often or the quickest the avalanche breaks loose left of the hut - in the gully. Exactly for that (to avoid the mentioned dangerous area), there is also a safer path for winter ascents. Obviously for descents too.

Today I went up, but unfortunately with my buddy we only reached the hut. For the summit we changed our minds because of drifting snow and wind. Otherwise, the winter path is great for walking, the snow was hard and almost no sinking. The dancer thanks for the info.

Yesterday 3.1.09.: Sunny, cold, windy at top but bearable. Path this time leads a bit differently, interesting that a bit below summit it crosses that small ridge.. Someone who didn't know made track, others clearly all behind him (us too). On hard surface nicely, a bit slower to summit without issues, where the known ridge just isn't there this time.. Up and down winter path. Recommend!

Never done winter tours on Golica, so curious where's the start for that "winter path" mentioned? Planina pod Golico or something else? How far by car? Thanks.

OK, I'll explain. Let's say Planina pod Golico is some sort of starting point, hope you know farm tourism BETEL. You can leave the car at the parking lot below Betel (I always do so). The path continues past Betel on the road to FENC apartments. Behind the house opposite FENC, turn right uphill to the forest and here it starts. The path is well trodden and marked. Continue to the lower station of the cargo cable car, where there is a well-marked turn-off for the winter path to Golica; from there it'll be fine. It's important to find FENC; from there it's well trodden and you can't miss it, super especially now with no sinking, I recommend.

Today there was a nice sunny day on Golica. It was windy at the top, but pleasantly warm at the hut.

Yesterday, on Saturday, my colleague and I decided to head for Golica. We parked at Fenc. Behind the house we turned right immediately up the hill. At the lower station of the cargo cableway we turned left, where a sign marks the winter trail. The snow was quite compact but due to the warm sun and late hour, it sank. A little below the Golica Hut we had to do a bit of "climbing". (experienced ones will probably just laugh ) At the hut we left our backpacks (also hats and jacket) and headed to the top. Midway it started blowing. At the top the wind was very strong and especially COLD and soon forced us to shorten our panoramic viewing. Hat, gloves and jacket mandatory at the top ). There were very few hikers, altogether we met about ten people. The weather was warm, wonderful, beautiful.., except the exposed top. From the hut we headed around 14.00 to the valley, but the snow was already very soft and sank well in places. I'm not a great expert in winter snow walking, but I think we should have started a bit earlier, as the snow was much more compact in the morning. Gaiters and crampons are not superfluous. Best

Approximately when will narcissus viewing be possible? So I don't drive to the other end of Slovenia for nothing

Yesterday I was on Dobrča, which is snow-free on the southern slope up to 1400-1500m (almost the height of the Golica Hut). In shelter there's good meter of snow sinking up to the waist. Golica has a very southern position, so it will be snow-free soon (above the hut on the bare slope probably already). I'll check Golica in the coming weeks, otherwise narcissus usually bloom around May 10th.

Let me look out the window... Currently it's snowing above 1200 m. Narcissuses in lower areas (below Planina pod Golico) - Javornik, Jav.rovt, Koroška Bela, Prihodi are already sprouting, blooming here and there.

Is this snowing serious? Or just a metaphor about narcissuses?

I'm also interested in how it is with narcissuses? I plan to go up there sometime in mid-May, hope I'm not too late...

Of course it's serious. It's snowing, which is nothing special for this time and place. Narcissuses are lower for now, as I described. If I had time I'd go to some spot, e.g. a bit above Kor.belo and photograph them. The thing is: end of April they appear up to Javorniški or Plavški rovt height, in May on and above Planina pod Golico, towards the top and e.g. on Belski planini, Struški etc., you encounter them even early June. So present about 1.5 months. Picking not really recommended. And one more somewhat worse photo showing real situation now - snowing at Potoška planina height 1270 m a.s.l. (Golica nearby, but unfortunately not visible from my window).
