Access to the starting point:
Follow the motorway through Austria and on through Germany towards Munich. Leave the motorway at Siegsdorf and continue south towards Ruhpolding. Approximately 3 km further on, you reach the village of Laubau, where a signpost directs you to the left to a large parking lot in front of the Holznecktmuseum Ruhpolding.
Path description:
From the parking lot, direction signs point south. After 800 m, the initially asphalted road turns into a dirt road and we follow it to the mountain pasture Schwarzachen Alm (755 m), 3 km away. The dirt road continues straight ahead, and we turn right onto a path that winds alongside a stream. After a few minutes we reach a fork. Both paths lead to the top of the Sonntagshorn. The left one is usually used for descending, while the right one is used for ascending. And this is the one to follow. We cross the stream, at first quite gently, but then it starts to climb very steeply along the edge of the rather exposed gorge of the Mittleren Kraxenbach, which is adorned with numerous pools and waterfalls. In some places, the cable cars are also helpful. The path more or less runs parallel to the stream and crosses it on several occasions. After 2 hours' walking, you will pass the former larch-covered mountain pasture Mittleren Kraxenbach Alm, and shortly afterwards you will emerge from the forest. Above us rises a steep scree slope, flanked by the northern wall of the Sonntagshorn and its neighbours. A strenuous climb over the scree leads to the base of the 70-metre chimney, which must be climbed (climbing grade II). Red dots lead over jumps (I), followed by an exposed traverse to the left to the next threshold (II), which is crossed via a gully (II) to a ridge flattening. From here we go more or less straight along the ridge towards the summit, onwards over a couple of rock jumps (Levels I-II), higher up through dwarf pines, until we reach a grassy darkness with a cross.
