Above the wide valley of the Poprad River in northeastern Slovakia, in the Stará Ľubovňa District, rises a hill bearing the ruins of 13th-century Plaveč Castle. The castle was built to defend the road to Poland, at the ford across the Poprad River, approximately around 1294. Several owners gradually rebuilt the castle. In the 18th century, the castle lost its military significance. The last inhabitants of the castle were the Paloszay family even in the 19th century. Due to the compromised statics of the castle, however, they moved to the manor house near Plaveč.
