It is an important agricultural center on the Via Cassia, in the short plain where the Ombrone flows into the Arbia, formed as a stopover place on the Via Francigena. The toponym, from Latin «Bonus Conventus», happy place, probably refers to the fertility of its lands, cultivated with wheat and vines.
