The landscape of Val d'Orcia, characterized by a succession of hilly reliefs, is marked by the medieval route of the Via Cassia (which around the 8th century shifts between Florence and Bolsena 20 to 35 kilometers further west than the original Roman route): a route that passes through the main centers of San Quirico, Castiglione, Radicofani, and on the branch to Valdichiana, Pienza and Montepulciano.
