Description: 22-23-07-2007: From my 2007 video archive. (Filmed with Hitachi VM-E 565 LE camcorder). With its 3798 m, Grossglockner is not only the highest mountain in Austria, but also one of the highest peaks in the Eastern Alps. Located on the border between Carinthia and East Tyrol, it is the highest peak of the massif called Glockner Group, located on the main ridge of the Hohe Tauern, within the namesake park; at its feet lies the Pasterze glacier, the largest in the Eastern Alps. It is possible to drive a very scenic toll road, the Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße, connecting Heiligenblut am Großglockner (in Carinthia) with Fusch (in Salzburg); the latter is Europe's most famous alpine road, leading directly into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park: along its 36 hairpin turns over about 48 km it allows close view of the peak from around 2500 m a.s.l. In Heiligenblut am Großglockner, the Hotel Kaiservilla was built exactly where the old alpine hut stood, where the imperial couple's servants stayed overnight. The south slope served as scenery for the 1993 TV film 'Heidi', directed by Michael Ray Rhodes with Jason Robards, Jane Seymour, Patricia Neal and Siân Phillips.
