Last week I was on foot at Mangart Saddle, where you can't go by car anymore currently, and there was such a nice peace there ...

It would suit me if it were someday like that also on Vršič ... jezik

In mid-July we two and two more female hikers hiked the High Carnic Trail. For me especially cool were completely new mountain trails and views. The atmosphere on the trail and in the huts was a bit like on the Camino; we often met some hikers and chatted. Some shepherds and foresters also addressed us. You can sleep almost on all Austrian and Italian pastures along the trail; just contacts for local huts are harder to find. And German guidebooks for the High Carnic Trail have shorter stages than suggested by Habjan and Bagi above; I learned from German-speaking hikers. ;-) To the starting point in Sillian Arnbach we came by trains, departure from Ljubljana at 5:24, arrival in Sillian Arnbach at 10:32 for 20 euros.

I take the 19I to Iška vas and return with the 19B from Jezero to LJ. (On weekdays, fewer trolleys on weekends.)

Along all paths to Krim bunches of anemones are blooming. 🌼

By train to mountains. 🚂 Morning train from Ljubljana via Villach to Šmohor/Hemagor. From there shortest hiking path to Golc, along ridge east to Negal/Spitzegel, Vellacheregel and down to swim in Pressegger See and last train back to Ljubljana.

From the east side the bus goes to the place Koschach in the Malta Valley, which is similarly far as from Mallnitz. There is no public transport closer; I just researched it. zadrega Maybe some friendly mountaineer driver through Goessgraben picks up a hitchhiker.

Maybe in a couple of years ... insurance companies will offer assistance for missed public transport, just like they do for cases when the car won't go any further. cool

Interesting stories. I also went first time to Triglav with father Miho Žužek, at fifteen, with some fifty youngsters, in one day. ;-)

But I came to show it can still be done today. ;-) Useful if you live in center of Ljubljana, walk fast, bit exploratory oriented, used to public transport ...

To Zermatt, Matterhorn path I think everyone comes with public transport (or taxi), otherwise no go. ;-)

I went by train also to mountains above Mallnitz, Bad Gastein, Sankt Anton, Spittal on Drava, also Chamonix. To top of Dinara from Knin by train but one hot summer I couldn't make it, had to repeat expedition with car in spring. ;-(

I start the hike to Stol right in Žirovnica and go between houses and under that water facility to Završnica and further on foot.
You can find the train schedules between Jesenice and Podrožca here: https://www.oebb.at/ You can also buy the ticket online (4 euros) and probably on the train.
On Austrian weekdays, the train at 6:37 departs from Jesenice and stops in Podrožca at 6:47.
If Jesenice isn't too far for you, you can check it live (not on the weekend); the train will be waiting on the side track, there more towards the west, i.e., Karavanke tunnel/Austria (not at the underpass).
As I wrote, you need to be a bit of a detective to discover all existing options.

To Stol I also regularly hike from the railway or bus station Žirovnica.
Sometimes also from the railway station Podrožca/Rosenbach.

Even from Dolenjska I have practice with mountain trips using public transport. nasmeh
This was one Saturday winter stage of Jakob's path:
7:34 in Ljubljana on the train to Novo mesto from there on foot towards Straža, Frati, Vrhtrebnje and in Trebnje in the evening by train back towards the capital.
I somehow manage to find such connections quite well. mežikanje

If you want to use public transport for hiking, you have to get used to walking fast (good motivation) and become a detective for researching timetables. nasmeh
Between Vodnikov dom and junction to Tosc (Na Zagonu) there's a sign Bohinjsko jezero 3h and on the way down you can't get lost (that to Zgornja Grintovica and Krstenica is [not necessary> detour from path to lake), it's well marked and almost without forks. Useful connection also for Tosc by bus. nasmeh

I often practice such traverses with public transport. nasmeh
(My very favorite experiments. Sometimes they don't work out as planned. jezen)
This one is from August:
5:30 from main bus station in LJ to Kranj;
6:40 caught summer Sunday bus towards Jezersko and got off at Kanonir, then to Stegovnik, Ženiklovec, Storžič, over Psica to Tolsti vrh, Kriška gora to Tržič and caught bus at 18:25 from Tržič back to capital.
Then my Garmin even lasted/recorded the whole route: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/11886501653

I went last Saturday specifically to test this connection:
5:30 from main bus station in LJ towards Mojstrana;
7:30 caught in Mojstrana at Mercator minibus to Vrata
Around 8am started from Vrata along Tominškova to Staničev dom, continued to Vodnikov dom, since I had some time left jumped to Tosc and descended towards Spodnja Grintovica and since there was still plenty of time to the last bus from Ribčev Laz to the capital climbed also to Zgornja Grintovica and Krstenica, from there descent to Voje, did a few splashes in Bohinj Lake and caught penultimate bus to the capital in Ribčev Laz, at 18:48 or with a 20-minute delay it left.
This and next Saturday the trip can still be repeated, after that I think the bus from Mojstrana to Vrata won't be for a long time.

BTW. Is the thread related to European Mobility Week? ;-)

Yes, S-Bahn, CityStar, Bled suburban train starting from Jesenice and also stopping at Podrožca. Ten minutes' ride, most of it through a tunnel. International trains do not stop there.
