lijaneja, never say never, but I think we're too far apart fitness-wise and you'd have to wait for me a lot... 
Anyway, I'm open to opinions about up and back in one day. What about evening drive and sleeping in the car at the parking lot, what's it like up there? Is the parking located within Hohe Tauern National Park? Do they check such things, fine, etc?

Hello, with some more fitness the circular tour takes (from car to car) 8-10 hours, not more at all, so it's quite doable in one day to climb Hochalmspitze with two and a half hours drive (five hours both ways). A bit less sleep and it'll be ok, but that's how mountains are

Tackle the mountain from Osnabruecker Huette, that's a proper glacier tour for 2 days. Technically and orientationally demanding. Of course, this variant isn't for those who often look at the clock.

Janez, interesting suggestion. Is it because it's perhaps the technically easiest access? Isn't that northern glacier Hochalmkees already a serious thing and you need to go with full glacier gear and roped?
For southern accesses I haven't found that, so they appeal to me more. But I read that over Steinerne Mandln there's rockfall danger lately, or even closed due to active scree (not sure)...

As said, glacier tour with all that comes with it, far from easy, very little frequented. Already to the glacier hard to follow, on descent even more.
