Wilder Freiger

Description of peak:
Wilder Freiger (Cima Libera in Italian) is one of the best known and most visited peaks in the central part of the Stubai Alps summit range, the Hochstubai. It is located on the border ridge between North and South Tyrol, or between the Austrian and Italian parts of Tyrol. The reason for the mountain's considerable popularity lies in the fact that it offers numerous access possibilities, including one of the least demanding routes to the eminent summit in the heart of the Hochstubai, the stopover status of the popular "7 summits of Stubai" point-to-point tour and the proximity of the high mountain huts Becherhaus (3195 m) and Müller Hütte (3145 m), which are situated above the extensive Übeltalferner glacier below Wilder Freiger.

Wilder Freiger is often crossed by enterprising mountaineers as part of the classic high-mountain route through the central part of the Hochstubai group, where they also climb the neighbouring Wilder Pfaff and Zuckerhütl on more challenging routes.

The summit offers a magnificent view of the heart of the High Stubai and its peaks above the hefty glaciers, and there are also pleasing views of Wilder Pfaff (3456 m) and its eastern ridge and the sharp Zuckerhütl (3507 m), the highest peak of Stubai Alps, and views towards the Stubai Valley and the peaks above it.
