Description of mountain hut:
The Becherhaus (Rifugio Bicchiere; also known as Rifugio Gino Biasi in Itali) is one of the highest mountain huts in the Eastern Alps. It is situated on the Becherfelsen lookout peak, which completes a narrow ridge descending southwards from the eastern foot of the Wilder Freiger, the Signalgipfel, and rises quite imposingly above the huge Übeltalferner glacier. The original construction of today's hut dates back to 1894 under the name Kaiserin-Elizabeth-Schutzhaus.
The Becherhaus, which is run by an Italian mountaineering association, together with the nearby Austrian Müller Hütte, form a pair of high-mountain huts which, thanks to their central location, offer relatively good access to the major peaks of the central Hochstubai group, in particular the Wilder Freiger (3418 m), the Sonklarspitze (3467 m) and the Botzer (3250 m); the huts are also the starting points for the more demanding but tempting eastern ascents of Wilder Pfaff (3456 m) and Zuckerhütl (3507 m), the highest peak of the Stubai Alps.
The hut is not easily accessible; the easiest and quickest access is from the Italian Ridnauntal valley, which is still long and indirect. From Austria, the most direct route to the hut is via the path that crosses just below the summit of the Wilder Freiger; thus, most visitors who come to the hut from Austria are also visitors to the famous Wilder Freiger.
