Description of mountain:
Agung, at 3,031 m, is Bali's highest mountain or volcano. It was recently 100 m taller, but the eastern part of the summit collapsed, leaving the western rim of the volcanic crater as the highest point.
It is a major religious symbol for Bali, believed to be a replica of the sacred Mount Meru, representing the central axis of the universe.
The last major eruption occurred in 1964, claiming 2,000 lives and leaving 100,000 homeless. The event ranks among the strongest eruptions of the 20th century and coincided with one of the largest religious ceremonies, held every slightly over 100 years.
Two popular approaches exist: (1) from Besakih Temple to the summit (6-7 hours ascent) and (2) from Pura Pasar Agung to the crater rim at 2,866 m.
