Description of church:
Diga del Vajont is a 261-meter-high and 190-meter-wide dam located in the Pordenone province east of Longarone. The dam was built in 1961 and is mainly known for the catastrophic accident on October 9, 1963. Due to the reservoir above the dam, which soaked the ground, a huge landslide was triggered from Monte Toc and buried the lake. The landslide pushed water over the dam, and a large wave then flooded the village of Longarone in the Piave River valley. 1,917 people died in the accident, including 487 children younger than 15. In memory of the victims, a chapel was built by the dam, and in 2015 a secured climbing path, Ferrata della Memoria, was created for this purpose, running through the gorge below the dam. UNESCO declared the mentioned accident in 2008 as one of the 5 greatest catastrophes of all time for which engineers and geologists are responsible.
