Access to starting point:
A) From the Ljubljana - Maribor highway, we take the Vransko exit, then continue driving on the parallel old road in the direction of Celje. A little after the place Kapla, we leave the main road and continue driving left in the direction of Braslovče. We drive through Gomilsko, following the road towards Braslovče to the spot where signs for Žovnek Castle direct us left. Further, we drive on a somewhat narrower road along Žovneško Lake to the spot where on a power line pole we notice trail markers for Žovnek Castle. Because at the starting point there are no appropriate parking spots, it is better to park a little lower on an appropriate place by the road, or we can drive further up the road towards Žovnek Castle and park there on an appropriate place by the road.
B) From the Maribor - Ljubljana highway, we take the Šentrupert exit, then continue driving towards Mozirje. At the place Parižlje, we leave the main road and continue on a local road towards the place Spodnje Gorče. Here we cross the main road Gomilsko - Braslovče and continue driving towards the village and Žovnek Castle.
Route description:
From the power line pole we head right across the meadow to the edge of the forest, where on a tree we notice a somewhat larger blaze. Here the path goes into the forest, and it begins to ascend relatively steeply. The path soon levels out and brings us to a wider cart track, along which we walk to a smaller junction. Here we continue left uphill (the right path bypasses Žovnek Castle) and continue the ascent on a steep path, along which in 2 minutes of further walking we arrive at Žovnek Castle.

Discussion about the trip Žovneško jezero - Žovnek Castle
|

On yesterday's family outing we satisfied several of our passions. Motorcycling (Vransko), hiking and interest in Slovenian castles (Žovnek). From the lake to the castle the path is short and currently partly muddy and wet. From the hill with the mighty ruins of once one of our largest castles there is a nice view of the surroundings. Full praise to the dedicated society that undertook to renovate and protect the mighty ruins. The logbook shows that this spot is popular with locals and others. The view of the frozen lake and the hill from which the remains of the high tower rise is almost like a fairy tale scene.

This is a very suitable target for a half-day trip. Žovneško jezero is extremely interesting due to the large number of different bird species. Fish eagle and white-tailed eagle are often observed. Yesterday we even watched a cockatiel (parrot). To the castle from the lake is a nice walk. Grad Žovnek has a rich history, the Counts of Celje originate from it.
