Access to starting point:
From Kranjska Gora we drive towards Bovec or vice versa, but only to the Vršič pass, where we park.
Route description:
From the Vršič pass we turn onto the path in the direction of Slemenova špica, the Hanz path to Mala Mojstrovka and the Tamar valley (left Mala Mojstrovka - usual path) along the path that begins to ascend transversely to the right. During the ascent, which takes place along the slopes of Šitna glava, we cross several smaller scree fields and torrents, then the path from Erjavčeva koča at Vršič joins us from the right.
Here we continue straight and, passing a viewpoint a few meters away, we climb in a few minutes to the Vratca saddle (1799 m), where the next marked junction is.
To the left continues the secured climbing path to Mala Mojstrovka and an unmarked path towards Sleme, to the right branches off an unmarked but well-trodden path towards Prednje Robičje, and straight ahead continues the usual path towards Sleme and Slemenova špica.
This is followed by a short section of the path where we cross the slopes below Prednje Robičje, then the path gradually begins to descend towards the slopes above the Mala Pišnica valley. When we reach the mentioned slopes the path turns left, then continues with several shorter ascents and descents. In dry conditions the undemanding path takes us a little further to a junction, where the marked path from Tamar through Grlo joins us from the right, as well as an unmarked path through Mala Pišnica.
We continue in the direction of Slemenova špica along the path that continues to cross the slopes high above Mala Pišnica. With beautiful views that reach all the way to nearby Italy and Austria, we soon arrive at the slopes of Slemenova špica, where the slope, but not the path, levels out. This is followed by a short ascent, then we arrive at a less well-marked junction, where we continue slightly to the right (straight ahead leads the path towards Tamar - the path past Črne vode (even if we continue straight it is still possible to reach Slemenova špica)). After a few minutes of further ascent the path completely levels out, and we see smaller lakes in front of us and the famous view towards Jalovec. We bypass the lakes on the right side, or wherever we want, then, passing the inscription box, we climb in a few minutes to the scenic and precipitous summit of Slemenova špica.
Vršič pass - Vratca 0:35, Vratca - Čez Sleme 0:20, Čez Sleme - Slatnica 0:10, Slatnica - Slemenova špica 0:10.

Along the route: Razpotje pod Vratci (1705m), Vratca (1800m), Čez Sleme (1773m), Slatnica (1814m), Jezerca na Slemenu (1855m)

Very nice and picturesque excursion, although on Sunday (20.5.07) from Vratc towards Špica there was still quite a lot of snow on the path. The view of Ajdovsko deklico is fantastic.

On the picture from the ridge there is no living soul!!! When I was there, it was teeming with walkers and dogs - like in a city park. I was a bit disappointed, but that's the price of easy access.

I was on the Slemen with the family, even the two-year-old granddaughter was along, in 2005 and it was the most beautiful trip in our mountains for me, though we've already visited quite a few mountain peaks. Štefan from Gačnik

MT - Wonderful autumn hike with unique views. I recommend the circular path from Vratice left under the Mojstravka wall to the end past the junction to Tamar to the top. Return via the lower path above the Pišnica valley to Vratice and then the same way to Vršič.

Somewhere I came across data that the forest below the summit of Slemenova špica is the highest forest in Slovenia. I'm wondering if this data is correct?

hot Sunday, strong sun, light breeze and peace on this trail we were almost alone nice hike suitable also for smaller hikers and those with less fitness

We only missed the stamp
| Tadej26. 06. 2008 |
The stamp and logbook box are located on a tree between the lakes and the summit.

| katjuša226. 06. 2008 |
in the box on the tree there was only some crumpled paper, no trace of the stamp

Is there still any snow on the trail from Vršič?
| heinz26. 06. 2008 |
Not on the trail, but beside it you notice old patches. Otherwise it's more than 100% snow-free and very hot. Yesterday the high-altitude sun really "roasted" us. Nice and effortless trip.

How does it look towards the S face of Mala Mojstrovka? Is there still any snow on the wall? Has anyone climbed Hanzova yet? l.p.

| katjuša226. 06. 2008 |
on Sunday they were climbing snow was in the hollows

| Kriška12. 10. 2008 |
The logbook in the box on the tree is full, lots of visitors. On the "špica" fewer animal droppings than years ago, but still too many for a person to sit and snack there. A few meters lower it's already better . On shady parts of the path there's still some snow, locally mud and puddles, otherwise the path is very nice.

On Saturday 13.06.09 I plan to do the tour from Vršič over Slemenova špica to Tamar, and I'm interested if anyone has walked this trail in these days to describe the conditions to me. Thanks

No problems. Left under the wall of Mojstrovka there's still some snow - but no panic. The lower path (above Pišnica valley) is dry.

Yesterday, 8.8., we also set off up there, despite poor weather forecasts and good thing we were optimistic. I've seen quite a few already, but since the weather was really gorgeous, the view of all surrounding peaks was also gorgeous. For my taste a tad too many people, but who could resist... The stamp was in its place, under the spica on the tree trunk, with ink pad, cool...

Hello! Has anyone been around Vršič and Slemenova špica in the last few days? I'm curious if the larches have changed color yet and turned yellow? best regards
| heinz4. 10. 2010 |
This doesn't really belong here, but as an example, in the Karavanke around 1500m they are already slowly turning golden.
| atoamac5. 10. 2010 |
Above the Belopeška jezera, the larches are already nicely orange, and also quite a few red, yellow and other warm color shades...
| matkov10. 10. 2010 |
Robi, larches are already nicely colored, so if the weather is nice, head out on the trail. Best

| Parkeljc5. 03. 2011 |
Yesterday we did it from Vršič to Špica. First tried with snowshoes - impossible! To Vratc we sink 10, sometimes up to 50 cm snow. In the gully just below Vratc a fresh avalanche already triggered, otherwise uncomfortable feeling before and behind it, as avalanche release possibility was very high. From Vratc to Slemenova špica sinking up to the butt in places, so we put on snowshoes. Took two hours for the path, especially interesting walking among snow-covered boulders. On return we notice across our track some new avalanches, without consequences for us. Wonderful!
| podromk7. 03. 2011 |
Parkeljc, your experience proves that an apparently easy tour can end up quite strenuous... unplanned. But that's why it's even sweeter, right... especially if you realize it could have ended differently
| Parkeljc7. 03. 2011 |
True, in "normal" winter conditions the tour is short and undemanding, but this time it was different and I must admit that on return crossing the avalanches I wasn't quite at ease. Well, it wasn't that bad, as snow under the new layer was settled, avalanches triggering only on surface. Really good experience.

Does anyone perhaps know what the current conditions are for a hike with children to Slemenova špica? Is there still any snow or is the path completely snow-free? Thanks & best regards!
| IgorZlodej5. 05. 2011 |
There's still quite a bit of snow but snow isn't a problem.
| Enka6. 05. 2011 |
No offense but I think part of the trail to Slemenova špica is exposed enough that in slippery conditions (snow) it's not exactly ideal for children (of course it depends on how old and experienced the kids are).
| iomejc6. 05. 2011 |
Igor&Enka, thanks for the info! The kids (5, 3) are usually a lot in the hills but still no need to overdo it. And they'll be all wet in 5min then it'll be slush up to the knees again Best regards!

...Summit, as always full of shit, the lakes are more like puddles, but Jalovec, that's wonderful, and Mojstrovke and Ponce. Quite a few went up Hanzova today. I was a bit "jealous" of them, and others

| Enka9. 09. 2011 |
Isn't it possible to reach Sleme right under the rocks? We have already gone by this described one, but now we would like to vary a bit . So, where do you need to go - at Vratcih left towards Mojstrovka and is there then a marked path to Sleme?
| ljubitelj gora10. 09. 2011 |
If you are not exactly a family with small children, you can also go from Planica to Tamar and from there towards Sleme past Črnih voda.
| Enka10. 09. 2011 |
Thanks, but this time we are taking friends with us, so we wouldn't go completely into the unknown. Otherwise this path is also planned... sometime .

| Nuši17. 10. 2011 |
Larches already beautiful in their yellow colors, not too many people, quite cold and cold wind. That's how it was yesterday at Slemenova špica. However, when I look at these beautiful larches and Jalovec in the background, it warms me up. At least in the soul. Indeed, as Enka already wrote, part of the path is quite exposed and caution is needed.
| Nuši17. 10. 2011 |
Oh Bojan A, maybe we really met somewhere. I was up there around 14:00. I think this trail is really nicer than the one over the scree, at least there's some sun here, while the one over the scree was already completely in the shade.
| Bojan_A17. 10. 2011 |
I was at the lakelets at 12:30 and then again around 3. The lower trail is definitely nicer, but both are walkable anyway.
| Enka17. 10. 2011 |
I already asked above where this trail over the scree goes and how it's marked, but got no answer . Since there are now two obvious experts on both trails here, I'm asking again - does this trail turn left at Vratca (like for MM) and is it marked where to go to Slemenova špica?
| Bojan_A17. 10. 2011 |
Sorry, I missed it. Exactly like that. The trail turns left at Vratca. Later, Hanzova pot branches off upwards from it. Then we mostly descend over scree to a junction, where we turn right towards Slemenova špica. Left leads the trail via Črno vodo to Tamar. Everything is well marked.

Bojan, many thanks! Maybe we'll get to SŠ this year yet and definitely check out this trail .

Hi! Is it possible that no one has been to Slemenova špica all winter?? Does anyone have info on the snow cover from Vršič to the peak? Is Vršič even passable (according to AMZS the road is closed since 30.11.2012)? How about the stability of the snow cover below Šitna glava? Maybe I'll go check on Saturday... Lp
| Daaam12. 03. 2013 |
Probably someone was there, but didn't comment ..the road is still closed, they announce it daily on the radio, traffic info says so too. Don't worry, it will be on the forum right away when they plow through with the snowplow... Conditions will probably change by Saturday (forecast of new snowfalls)
| rebecca15. 03. 2013 |
Hi, if you're thinking of Slemenova špica at this time, snowshoes mandatory, as you'll sink in, and I doubt it's trodden or tracked, since it's poorly visited in winter. The neighboring Mala Mojstrovka is much more popular and visited, ideal for touring skiers...

Today my brother and I took advantage of the nice sunny day for a trip to Slemenova Špica. The first autumn colors are already showing, so we will have to repeat the trip in the coming weeks. No parking fees at Vršič. No sign of the safety cable. The sheep have already moved lower on Vršič, so people there can worry about their droppings. Apparently sheep also like a nice view The question from biser gore whether the forest below Slemenova Špica is the highest forest in Slovenia is very interesting. As a forester, I haven't noticed any forest higher in Slovenia. Isolated larches can be found higher, but no continuous forest.
| Bojan_A19. 09. 2013 |
The highest forest is apparently at Macesnovec

On Friday, 4.10.2013, after work, I went with a colleague to Slemenova špica. We were at Vršič at three and then quickly towards the goal. On the way, we met only one mountaineer, while there were quite a few at the top of Mojstrovke. At the goal, we stayed until 22:00, where we did Timelapse. In between, a few drops of rain and rather miserable, cloudy weather, which, however, started to improve towards evening as if on order, and millions of stars appeared. We also saw a few bright meteors. In short, magical. Too bad the larches aren't colored yet. These photos came from the film.

With dogs from Vršič to Slemenova špica. Path is dry to Vratc from there increasingly more snow. Problem is the path which is completely icy. If you plan to hike to this area with children - don't.

I have no clue about this picture

The path itself is not strenuous, so it's suitable also for active pregnant women. But caution on the path is not amiss... Best regards and boldly on the way

I'm getting acquaintances visiting from abroad, 50-60 years old, who aren't used to the Alps except from afar and they really want a short hike so they can say they went "to the mountains". I haven't been on this path yet, so I'm wondering if it would be suitable for inexperienced and older people? Taking extra time into account, of course.

In summer yes, in winter no. Someone will surely disagree. Regards

Regarding the "profile" of guests from abroad I agree with Becar.. Maybe you can take them to the hut in Krnica it's not a mountain but they'd be in the embrace of big walls...mountain atmosphere..or take them somewhere to the hills..

What about Ciprnik from Planica, from there you can look at Slemenova špica.

thanks Juš, I'm just preparing a plan of trips for my "snails", this year more easy variants
| sirt124. 01. 2014 |
Only this variant for "snails" might not be so easy physically, as from the hut to Vratca it's nothing but knee-grinding.

Promised the friendly marker from PD Jesenice, who yesterday directed us lost souls to the right path towards Slemenova špica, to report on the status of the logbook - it is still at the top, yesterday it still had some blank pages, but given the number of visitors, they will probably run out soon. At the directions at the start of the path, a bit more caution is needed and start the path a bit more to the right, and not on the path to Mojstrovka, which yesterday confused quite a few of us otherwise a fantastic day illuminated by sun and incredible views

Slemenova špica on Saturday 28.10. Sunshine. Warm. On some places along the path compacted snow or icy. Need a bit more attention. Otherwise path mostly dry and ok. Snow higher up only on a few patches.

It seems the path description and photos are a bit outdated. There are no fixed cables on the path, but there's one section that's not too easy for someone who walked there. This part is not in the photos, so the "EASY" label might be a bit exaggerated.

The "easy" label refers to the PZS categorization: (1) An easy mountain path is a mountain path intended for walking and recreational running, where the user does not need to use hands for protection or assistance in moving along it. (2) An easy mountain path can generally also be used as a walking path. (3) When an easy mountain path crosses a steep slope, it must be wide enough to allow safe walking even for less experienced users. They are only required to be careful, physically fit, and wear appropriate footwear. Source: https://www.pzs.si/novice.php?pid=10730 So the "easy" label is appropriate.

Thanks a lot for the explanation. But I still think this path is not entirely easy.

If this one isn't easy....

Nordung, are you sure you didn't stray from the path somewhere? On this path there really is no rock jump that couldn't be easily overcome...

Everything is relative. I know people who casually bag several two-thousanders in a day. But I also know someone who couldn't get over an obstacle on this easy path.

Hello, have the larches already retreated to their famous dens?

You're a bit too early - wait until October

Slemenova Špica as a backup plan. Despite mass visits (mainly foreigners), nice. But you can avoid the crowd via the trail through scree past Hanzova trail. That's how we made a circular route. Fun! Of course, there were tourists in sandals and sneakers with smooth soles going up in the worst heat. In general, bigger crowds in the afternoon than morning, similar to Mala Mojstrovka. The sight of a father with one child in a backpack, the other girl barely climbing up in a dress and open sandals, as if in the city... In such cases, our warnings are in place! I can't imagine how they got down. Strange that rescuers aren't needed more often...

Ah, if everything is parked at Vršič, you can park in front of Erjavčeva hut, where the trail to Slemenova špica also starts and joins the main trail higher up. There is no crowd on this section from Erjavčeva either.

Hello, has anyone been to SŠ recently? I'm wondering if the larches are already colored?

Does anyone know the current conditions? Is there still any snow?

At Poštarski dom there are two webcams that could show the approximate conditions on nearby peaks, but unfortunately they are pointed at the sky...

Hey, has anyone gone on this trail in the last few days?

One classic question, are the larches already yellow, turning yellow, or is it still too early? Thanks

So the day wasn't too poorly used, after returning from Prisojnik we went for a walk to Slemenova špica, where the atmosphere was quite different. Lots of visitors. Blueberries are already nicely red and when the larches glow too, a repeat will be necessary!

How is parking at Vršič and until what time do you need to be at the pass to get a safe (paid) parking spot?
| bongo2. 11. 2024 14:13:25 |
Parking at Vršič is free (for now), paid is in front of Erjavčeva koča. Since the larches have done their thing, it probably doesn't matter when you arrive up there.

| AlesV624. 11. 2024 08:14:30 |
So they've already cleared the needles?

The larches on Slemenova špica are completely bare. They were still beautiful on Thursday at the viewpoint on Prisank, by the road.

Just asking experienced ones for opinion, this year at the beginning of October I want to go to Slemenova špica to see yellow-colored larches. When is the best time, first or second weekend (Friday to Saturday) in October? Thanks.
