Access to starting point:
From the highway Ljubljana - Jesenice take the exit Lesce and follow the road ahead in the direction of Žirovnica and Jesenice. After a few km of driving, we will get to a crossroad, where the road to Žirovnica and Moste branches off to the right (from the direction of Jesenice left). Only a few meters ahead at the next crossroad, we turn left to Moste (right Žirovnica). Further, we drive past a monument to fallen soldiers, where the road starts ascending a hill below the railway track. At the top of the slope, we turn right (at the sign Vila Karin), we continue towards Završniško jezero and Valvasorjev dom. The road then flattens and brings us to a crossroad, where the road to Valvasorjev dom branches off to the left. We take the mentioned road (straight Koča pri izviru Završnice), which starts gently at first, then steeper and steeper on an occasionally quite rough road (the steepest parts are asphalted). Higher, the road brings us to a somewhat larger crossroad, where we continue left in the direction of Potoška planina (right Doslovška planina). The road then flattens and a little further brings us to the next crossroad. This time we continue slightly right in the direction of Valvasorjev dom (slightly left Ajdna and Potoška planina) and we drive on a steeper road all the way to the mentioned hut. We park on one of the parking lots by the road near the mountain hut, parking in front of the hut is allowed only for guests.
From Poljane (crossroad before Završniško jezero) to Valvasorjev dom is 5 km.
Route description:
From Valvasorjev dom we go right on a footpath in the direction of Stol. The path soon goes into the forest, where it slightly ascends and brings us to a smaller junction, where we continue right. The path then brings us out of the forest, where it crosses slopes below Monštranca. This gentle and partly scenic path, which a little further crosses a short strip of forest, we follow to a junction on Žirovniška planina.
We continue left in the direction of »Stol - Žirovniška pot« (slightly right Stol Zabreška pot) on the path which only a little higher passes into a dense forest, where it continues for the next 10 minutes. The forest then thins out, the path passes among bushes through which it then ascends all the way to the next strip of forest. When we again step into the forest, we will get to a pile of stacked logs and above them a sign which "urges" us, that if we can, to carry one with us to Prešernova koča. A little further, we step out of the forest, along the edge of which we then ascend steeper. Higher, the path turns a little to the left and crosses a short slightly exposed grassy slope. The path then slightly flattens for a short time and brings us to a pleasant resting place, from which a nice view opens up on Gorenjska.
The path ahead ascends steeply again, this time on a slope which is mostly covered with dwarf pines. Higher, the path turns slightly to the right and brings us from the dwarf pines onto grassy slopes, where we also come to a less noticeable junction. We continue slightly right (left Potoški Stol and Vajnež) on a still relatively steep path, which soon passes onto the ridge of Mali Stol. This increasingly scenic path, which higher leads past a memorial, we follow all the way to Prešernova koča na Stolu.
From the hut we continue slightly right, past the sign in a few steps we ascend to the summit of Mali Stol. A short descent follows and the path brings us to a saddle between both Stols, where there is also a marked junction. We continue in the direction of Stol (right Celovška koča and Zelenica) on a transverse path, which after 10 minutes of further walking brings us to the highest peak of the Karawanks.
Valvasorjev dom - Žirovniška planina 20 minutes, Žirovniška planina - Prešernova koča 2:25, Prešernova koča - Stol 15 minutes.

Discussion about the trip Valvasorjev dom pod Stolom - Hochstuhl/Stol (Žirovniška way)

For those who don't have the best fitness, I recommend driving by car to the hut! 5km on gravel is almost 1:30h shorter path to the top! Otherwise, Stol is a very nice mountaineering tour. So if you don't like Grintovec, Stol will surely be fantastic for you.

I'm interested in what the winter hike to Stol is like? I haven't been in winter yet. I've been in winter say to Veliki Vrh, Kredarica, Snežnik, Begunjščica etc.

The lower and upper part is exposed to avalanches, even if the path is trodden there is no guarantee there won't be an avalanche. When the sun softens the snow, wet snow avalanches occur. In the upper part the path is sometimes icy. Everything depends on the conditions which are visible only when you're there. I think the path is somewhat more difficult than Veliki vrh.

Neither is dangerous, but it's a moderately long hike. I recommend a circular route (up one and down the other). Plp

Hut opened June 8. I was up there June 9 and everything is as it should be. Food, accommodation, tidy, friendliness,...
Very nice path: leave car in Žirovnica, to Valvasorjev dom, to Stol overnight, next day along ridge past Vajnež to Javorniški rovt and to Koroška Bela for bus back to Žirovnica. Žirovnica-Valvasor 1:30h, Valvasor-Stol 3h, hut-summit-Javorniški rovt 4h very leisurely walk, rovt-Koroška Bela under 1h.

Today we were at Stol with the family. One of the ladies strapped a log from the woodshed onto her back, which you can also see in the upper picture. When she brought it to the hut, one of the first comments from the caretaker was "Haven't the small ones run out yet". Then she got a candy for carrying. When she then ordered some teas and mentioned that in the past huts used to give tea for carrying logs, the response was: "Too bad, the wood would be too expensive". It's not about how they reimburse the carrying, but a candy and thanks would be polite. Candy and "too bad" is arrogant. And returning effort with arrogance is petty. At first I felt like carrying that log back down. Then I calmed down with the option to describe everything here, so that no one else with good intentions steps into the muck.

Was on Stol last year end of October and it was hot below the summit (last autumn warmer than ever before), lower down it was cloudy so from the top you couldn't see into the valley, but on the top the air was so clear and ideal for photography (Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps etc.), Stol is very nice, only if the weather conditions are really good.

I'm interested in how much walking there is from Žirovnica train station? Regards
| tonej9. 04. 2008 |
For a good walker, from the train station to Valvasorjev dom pod Stolom it's about 1.5 hours. From there to Prešernova koča na Malem Stolu another 2.5 to 3 hours. Of course, time estimate is subjective. If you head to Stol in April - there is snow right above Žirovniška or Zabreška planina, which can be rotten and heavy to walk on. Lots of sun and best regards Tone

Today at Stol, everything excellent, but at this time the hut could already be open! Or at least the stamp could be at the hut, not that my darling has to go to the top twice!

On Saturday 2.8.2008 I was on Stol. Praise to the hut keeper, really friendly reception and also the strudel (štrukelj locally) was super and a proper decent piece. Unlike the one a few weeks ago at Roblekov dom, where it was really tiny and more like a pie than a strudel....

We were also on Stol today! In the morning the view of Triglav and the valley was fantastic. Snow doesn't cause any problems even without crampons. The hut on Mali Stol is still (supposedly until June) closed! That's why there's no stamp either

Today I was on Stol (again after 25 years ) and despite fog and wind on the summit I had a nice hiking day. I went up via Zabreška pot and it bothered me a lot that in the lower part it's not sufficiently marked and I got quite confused, as the pasture is trampled by horses, so the path is hard to find I returned via Žirovniška pot, which is very steep and seemed hard to descend - knees suffer or EMŠA . Next time I'll go the other way, seems smarter to me

Today I was on Stol and from the sunny summit I observed the foggy valley. I just want to warn about the icy last third of the path, where the use of crampons and ice axe is mandatory.

The car is best left at the Završnica dam, a few 100 m further is still possible by car, that's all. Yesterday we tried with chains - not worth it. We had to leave the car about a kilometer further, at the chapel. To Valvasorjev dom we walked about 50 min on the road, from there the path is initially good, soon we almost regretted not taking crampons. The path to the top is well visible, but higher up there is wind-blown snow on the path, which we were the first to break this morning. Crampons would really have been a great help, but there was no danger of slipping despite that. Somewhere at 3/4 of the path a strong sharp wind blew up, I don't know from where, but in a few seconds I no longer felt my cheeks. We had to mask up quickly, because of the strong gusts of wind it was all quite adrenaline-pumping for a few minutes and we were really afraid that the wind might increase towards the top. But the closer we got to the saddle, the more the wind died down. After a good three hours from the car we arrived at the top, not a breath of wind blew for those half hours, who would have thought, and when we descended, it all repeated, just in reverse order. On the bench again rest, refreshment and a bit of admiring the valley, then descent to the car. Stol is really unpredictable in all seasons even though it gives a calm appearance.

What's the situation like on Stol this year? How much snow still up there. I know the hut is still closed. Has anyone been there yet?

| tomko5. 05. 2010 |
I was up there on 29.4.. Walked for two hours, conditions are good. I started as late as 2 pm and the snow that starts towards the top (on the ridge) held up. There's still quite a bit of snow at the top but it's walkable.

Today, June 5, 2010, my friend and I went up to Stol. The Žirovniška pot took us with breaks less than 3 hours and it seemed to us to consist of one endless ascent. There is no snow on this path anymore. Some remains in patches on the scree, where you can't influence the intelligence of people who take that as a faster descent option. The day was sunny and just the right temperature. Worth taking advantage of tomorrow too.

The Žirovniška pot is really steep, but when you return via Zabreška everything is forgotten

| Kotman29. 06. 2010 |
I've been drawn to Stol for quite some time now, and judging by the pictures I see it's quite rocky. Is it recommended to take a helmet?
| jprim29. 06. 2010 |
You can take the helmet with you and tie it to your backpack, since it's not heavy, the decision to put it on your head or not is yours to judge, in my opinion - I've never used it, though I know the Zabreško, Žirovniška and Zelenica paths. From the Austrian side it's really necessary, but that path is now closed. LP!
| heinz29. 06. 2010 |
Well, Kotman, since you'll probably go for the first time on one of the hiking paths (Zabreška, Žirovniška, from Zelenica etc.) let me assure you that you definitely won't need a helmet there - anywhere. From our side no path is demanding. Happy hiking, no worries! LP heinz!!
| jprim29. 06. 2010 |
Well, ... heinz is the helmet in your opinion protection only against falling rocks? LP!
| heinz30. 06. 2010 |
Then it's best to put it on your head always and everywhere, - even when you go e.g. shopping. jprim, I believe you always have it with you..
| el rocco30. 06. 2010 |
I am an amateur hiker and I have been to Stol many times and for the mentioned paths (Žirovniška, Zabreška) helmet is definitely not needed. As for the path, Žirovniška is really steep but you ascend quickly accordingly. From the bench onwards, you don't have to go directly to the gully to the hut anyway.

Today started from in front of Valvasorjev dom at 6.45 via Žirovniška route, at 9.30 on top of Stol. Views beautiful, from Triglav to Grintovec without a cloud. Descent to Prešernova for a "rogca", then further along Zabreška, hot as hell. At Valvasor another rogac and drive home. Road from Žirovnica to the hut in pretty good condition. Best regards Note: No pencil in the summit logbook. Bring your own.

Hmmmmm, it seems to me that the road to Valvasorjev dom hasn't been in such bad condition in the last two years, I would take a log with me, but the one who sawed them really exaggerates in size. Besides, resin still drips from the log, no thanks!

| artur1. 08. 2010 |
My wife and I were at the top today. It bothered me a bit that I didn't find the road to Valvasorjev dom right away from the motorway. The weather was wonderful, we missed the 100th anniversary of Prešernova koča by just one day. Only the log was already giving me some trouble towards the summit. I recommend it, because the view is really unique. Just need to get up early!

| Cyro17. 08. 2010 |
It's a bit hard to find Valvasorjev dom, when you arrive in Žirovnica you go left (not right on the main).. and after the dam (or what??) you turn right-unfortunately there's only a sign for pizzeria or club Kirn??..later you follow signs to lovski dom (special sign only if you come from the Jesenice side)... it appears later... Today, 17.08.2010..they were renovating the road, about 30% is already properly arranged, covered with soil or fine sand...
| Parkeljc24. 08. 2010 |
Regarding the road to Valvasorjev dom, I really wouldn't waste words - DESPAIR! On 22.8. I drove to Valvasorjev dom hoping that what Cyro wrote on the 18th holds true. Let me just say that I've been to Stol 6 times this year, but the road has never been as bad as it is now. It is true that halfway along the road I met a bulldozer and a roller, which had "processed" the road to Potoška planina a couple of days earlier.

| Gorazd G24. 08. 2010 |
Can I ask why hikers, mountaineers, alpinists, trekkers, in short all those who walk on foot (not all of us are all of the above) worry so much about the roads that lead into but not to the mountains?
| heinz25. 08. 2010 |
For the ascent and descent from the valley to the summit, quite a bit more fitness than average is needed. Not everyone has/does it. If there were no road to Valvasorjev dom, Stol would certainly be less visited by more than half. We would climb it only a few times in a lifetime, not in a year.. Although the hiking path through the forest from Završnica to Valvasorjev dom is quite pleasant. Otherwise, the path from Javorniški rovt (from Trilobit hut - "through Medji dol") is to my taste nicer, more interesting, perhaps even a bit less strenuous, more scenic.. and in short more suitable for a one-day tour than those leading from Valvasorjev dom to the summit. And the road to the starting point is always in excellent condition, as it is almost entirely asphalted. A little before the dam or Trilobit there is plenty of parking space. I therefore recommend the latter!

Today my wife and I visited Stol via the Žirovnica route. Beautiful day, not too hot, pleasantly breezy, excellent views both towards Slovenia and Austria. There were huge crowds on Stol - we dragged up like a procession. The road to Valvasorjev dom is really not brilliant, but not as bad as described a bit higher up. True though, it would be best to go on foot already from Žirovnica. Most mountaineering!

| klm20. 10. 2010 |
Sadly I can't. I have to water for LM, besides I've been to Stol so many times that it's gotten a bit boring. Since you're going for the first time, take it slow and enjoy the beautiful views that open up in ever different perspectives with gained elevation! Since there will be almost no hikers (some local surely turns up; quite a few climb to the nearby Valvasorjev dom, fewer go all the way to the top, yet) you might meet herds of chamois that at this time come from under the northern slopes to the southern grassy hillsides. About the (not)demandingness of the tour you can read in the above paragraph. In short, enjoy!!!

Today started at 7:10 from the village Potoki to Ajdna. At the top at 7:50 nice view of the landscape, the sun illuminated Triglav and painted it orange, morning without clouds. From there continued the path to Valvasorjev dom, and further towards Stol via Žirovniška pot. A little before the summit I missed the path, first I wanted to reach the hut then to the top, but I ended up in that valley between Stol summit and the hut. There was knee-deep snow in some parts, as if that wasn't enough, the whole path was in shade and it was quite cold. Otherwise it wouldn't have been so strenuous to walk, until my dog (small pup 6kg) got scared of the deep snow, and I had to carry him across the whole valley hehe.. Well, I reached the hut, a bit windy, so I hid behind the hut, there it was pleasantly warm without wind. But I didn't go to the top, because of the little dog as wind was blowing and there was a bit more snow and I saw that today we're not going anywhere else. I was at the hut for 2 hours, then clouds started coming so I quickly packed my things, while it hadn't started freezing again and while I was still warm I went back to the valley. To V.dom it took me one hour, from there I didn't count anymore. Anyway, it was a nice day on 'Stol'

so you went after all... see, there's no more than 3-5cm of snow. but this afternoon it has already visibly melted some, I hope it won't "completely" melt it away... congratulations on the "neither autumn nor winter" ascent (that's what I mean, neither autumn-nor winter) so that no one gets too deeply offended again...
| klm21. 10. 2010 |
Oakley sf, you had a good tour then. Nothing serious. There's a bit more snow; 7-8 cm, only in the cirque Med Stoloma there's some more drifted. I slightly reduced the snow cover height for encouragement and to reduce fear.
| oakley_sf21. 10. 2010 |
yeah it was a nice tour. yeah there's a bit more snow nothing serious, yeah it's good there's snow because somehow I get down faster than where there's no snow. Where I got lost there was a bit more, nothing too bad Geolog I'm not offended, otherwise we know each other, I just changed my name. I'm the one who we're arranging the trip for next year hehe.

look at the path under your feet...
| heinz26. 10. 2010 |
yes, yesterday it snowed, and today too - currently snowing. So there will be quite a bit, probably not much trodden yet.. caution due to avalanches under prižnica won't be superfluous.
| oakley_sf26. 10. 2010 |
last week it was still passable, given that these days it's been snowing down to 700m, higher up new snow layers are surely more than last week. So I think the path will need to be trodden anew.

I was at Valvasorjev dom today.. I didn't intend to go further, but I met a hiker returning from the top, whom I asked what the path to the summit is like. And he says: horror! why, I ask.. because there's snow up to the waist in places, he says, impossible to reach the summit, no trail etc.. so I soon turned back... o.k. I think, so it's not as easy as it looks... otherwise there's up to 30 cm of snow at Valvasorjev dom too. the road there, - surprisingly fully plowed..

After the recent snowfall in the mountains, the snow has mostly melted away. Some remains only in the high mountains of the Julian Alps and in shady spots elsewhere. With renewed snowfall, which began in the west in the high mountains already on Sunday, by this morning 10 to about 40 cm of snow has fallen in the Julian Alps. The amount depends mainly on altitude. Elsewhere in our mountains, there is less new snow. The snow line has dropped to around 600 m altitude. In the high Julian Alps, currently 40 to 65 cm of snow, lower down the amount decreases quickly. Elsewhere in our mountains, less snow, 5 to 15 cm. The snow is light and dry, the north and northeast wind drifts it into drifts on wind-exposed spots, so the snow cover depth is quite uneven. Conditions in the mountains are currently wintery. Avalanche danger is low, 1st degree. The snow is light and soft. This afternoon it will clear up and until the end of the week it will be mostly clear and initially cold. On Friday warmer air will arrive, the snowline will rise above 2000 m. Until Friday the snow will remain light, only on the surface in sunny aspects a crust will form. It will settle somewhat and also melt in lower altitudes. By the end of the week, snowline above 3000 m. Therefore, the snow cover in the high mountains will start to transform and settle quickly.

The track ends approx. where you reach the grassy plateaus, or where the last dwarf pine slabs end. Last year, at the end of November, it looked like not much snow had fallen. I happily set off towards the summit, progressing quickly, the track easing my way. Slowly I started laughing, because while ascending I was already visualizing reaching the top in 3 hours (started at Završniški j.), but it ended quickly. First I had to cross a small, still fairly firm avalanche (it's in the same spot as the small gully) before the path turns sharply right into a small coniferous forest (there are logs stacked for Prešeren hut), from there the track started to disappear considerably due to drifted snow. From the rest spot it vanished completely. From there I had to break trail myself. I'll be the first, I thought. And went. At first it was fine, on nicely frozen crust, no sinking, then I broke through. Left leg to the knee. In the next moment my right leg was up to mid-thigh under the snow crust. Damn! Then it was OK for a while, until I sank again, this time to the crotch. Everything would have been fine if I hadn't been up to my waist in snow with both legs! Like quicksand, it was swallowing me! Like a penguin or seal I kicked and tried to jump out. Finally I freed myself and cautiously continued. Slowly advancing inch by inch... yeah, units of measurement change a lot in such conditions. But what, I idiot continued in similar fashion almost to the start of the gully Between the Stols, when it hit me. For those 200 vertical meters I used a good two hours! I couldn't say the hike was a calvary. I felt like the biggest idiot, but when it doesn't go, it doesn't. Besides damaged pants, I mainly injured the skin on both legs. Since I had no gaiters, with each sinking my pant legs rode up, the top frozen snow crust cut, cut.... it healed nicely for two months, but for two weeks I woke up at night from pain every time I turned. I actually didn't feel the pain the whole descent to Valvasorjev dom... that's just part of the memories of last year's ascent to Stol. If there's too much snow, no point pushing to the top. It's smarter to turn back, someone will surely make the track to the top for you!

Yes, Klamen something similar happened to me last year on Srednji vrh. It was already April and I set off for mountain running (of course in shorts) via Jakoba, Cjanovca and Javorski vrh towards Srednji vrh. Snow appeared (unexpectedly) only higher up and cut me like a sharp blade (I also stopped only when I no longer felt my legs): http://bojanambrozic.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/img_18532.jpg?w=225 That's why I know well how it hurts.

can someone tell if anyone else has been to Stol, that it's not dangerous to go to Stol now in this period because of the snow (I want to go tomorrow), so I can tell my girl that there's no special danger, I know it's a bit weird all together but she won't stop nagging until someone says it's safe. Otherwise I don't know what she's afraid of since she herself doesn't know what she's afraid of. So please be kind and save me from this torment!

Maybe someone knows what the road to Valvasorjev dom is like now? Can you get up there with a normal car? Is the hut open? (or some other hut around there - so kids aren't outside all the time).
| viharnik13. 01. 2011 |
Valvasorjev dom is open on weekends, regarding the mountain roads around there, there are icy sections in many places. Do not set off on the path without chains. Especially during thawing, the ice will become even more slippery.
| Parkeljc14. 01. 2011 |
On 1.1.11 we with a friend drove in a personal car (KIA) to the junction for Potoško planino, of course without chains!!! So we were about 800 m short of Valvasorjev dom!!! After this date I don't believe much new snow has fallen. Many behind us didn't make it over the icy section of the road, about 1 km from asphalt. With smart driving I think you can get almost to Valvasorjev dom.

Some photos from last Saturday: https://picasaweb.google.com/luka.petkovsek/Stol522011# Snow mostly in the last third of the ascent, lower there's snow just for sample, but path can be icy too, so crampons are quite recommended. Only weather tomorrow probably won't be the nicest per forecast.

| Kristina_G*11. 02. 2011 |
I was on Stol Tuesday and it was great. At start no snow at all, then midway some snow, some ice, some nothing again.... Last hour fine with crampons as snow was hard but not much. On top completely soft from sun. If you want photos, write me.

With my son and his father-in-law, on 10.07.11 in the early morning hours, I set off towards the summit of STOL, so the sun only illuminated us at Prešeren hut. It was a wonderful day with a beautiful view of the valley and the Julian Alps. For the path to the summit we needed 2h. 30min., then on the other side via pl. Žirovnica together 4h.30min.

hello, I would go to Stol in one day. Is that feasible? Which path do you recommend?

| robter16. 07. 2011 |
ditka, the path description tells you how much time it takes. For this path, max 6 hours (up and down), so if you don't go too late in the afternoon, it's definitely doable in one day.
| ditkaedita16. 07. 2011 |
kr neki, your answer is rude, but if it makes you happy, I accept it. robter thanks for the friendly answer, I'm asking because through the mountaineering society Stol was always scheduled for two days... and I was thinking maybe it's a strenuous path or something....

This Stol really tempts me. As it seems, I might go there alone. From comments it's clear you can ascend via Žirovniška pot, descend via Zabrška. Start and end at Valvasorjev dom then. Am I right? And probably early start is recommended (as always) since part of the path can be exposed to sun. Correct? Thanks for answer.

I'm interested if this path is suitable for a dog. Mainly I'm interested in the path to the top and how much scree there is. What about the path from Ljubelj and Zabreška pot? The dog has enough stamina and strength. I'm only concerned about possible climbing and scree because of the paw pads (especially on descent, as it's a daredevil, uphill is no problem, goes like a chamois). Thanks.

| bperc27. 08. 2011 |
I think the dog won't have problems. There is no climbing from the direction of Valvasorjev dom pod Stolom on any of the described paths. So the path is nice and I myself saw some dogs when I was up there recently.

Hi, today I was on Stol for the first time.. ascent via Žirovniška path and descent via Zabreška. Wonderful trip, perfect weather, at Prešernova koča soup and strudel phenomenal... highly recommend the ascent
| Iksek17. 09. 2011 |
Today I was also on Stol. Via Žirovniška gora, via Zabreška dolina. The strudel is really good. But the signs, or rather the times written on them, bothered me, as they are a bit at odds with reality.
| Jure8717. 09. 2011 |
I was also up there today and chose the same tour as my predecessor (Iksek), only instead of strudel I ate pancakes which are also very good and a large portion too. I don't worry about the signs on the boards, as I seriously only consider the time written on hribi.net (otherwise I was up in a little less than two hours - but time is individual). Anyway, for a hiker with solid fitness, the times on hribi.net are alpha and omega for planning hikes. PS: Prešernova koča will be open this year only until 25.09.2011. Good luck!

| Parkeljc29. 09. 2011 |
We'll probably have to wait until late spring
| gti29. 09. 2011 |
Why wait? If there's will and time, you go to the summit, stamp the summit stamp, at the hut your own photo or two, and there's no such crowd as in the main season...
| zvezdica8429. 09. 2011 |
If I understand correctly, the summit also has its own stamp? Well, then that one will suffice too
| heinz30. 09. 2011 |
Of course. There's a fixed stamp at the top of Stol, but the pad is completely dry, so it's best to have your own. I don't use stamps myself, but I was there just yesterday evening witnessing persistent stamping efforts. The ink on the pad in the logbook box has dried up. Valvasorjev dom has a whole bunch of stamps in a basket at the bar (self-service).

Today on Stol, didn't go quite to the top but still excellent conditions. Snow starts only at Valvasorjev dom, no tracks yet (well now there's a trail ), ca. 20 cm snow, probably a bit more on top but light and real pleasure to walk on. On steep terrain in sun it can be a bit avalanche-prone but due to snow amount not too dangerous, still need caution. View and feeling of course phenomenal

Both my partner and I are also planning to go to Stol on Saturday. I'm still quite congested but hope to be better by Saturday. I also had concerns about the snow, since I haven't been to Stol in winter yet. There should be 20 to 40 cm of snow, which isn't too much. Does anyone have experience with the first snow on Stol?

Getting to Stol in the snow is no easy feat, especially in fresh knee-deep snow. I've been there during organized winter ascents when the track was already broken, and it was quite strenuous. It's not the same as the summer ascent, so proceed with caution.

Can you still drive further from Valvasorjev dom? How much? Namely, tomorrow I'm going to Stol. First time. But I don't have much time because I have to be in LJ in the afternoon already. Condition isn't too good either, since I've been on crutches for a few months. Thanks for the answer. LP

From Valvasorjev dom you can drive further by car, but it's not worth it. The path to Stol branches off the road 100 m from the hut. At Žirovniška planina it says 2:30 hours to the top.

bojann Ankle injury took a lot of my time. Almost 4 months. Just the nicest part of the year. So this year I haven't been higher than 1700. Now the injury is healed, condition isn't quite at level. Weather is nice, won't be for long. I'd like to take advantage of it. The southern slope of Stol is nicely sunlit, the path is easy (according to description), so I decided for this path. Time is really a problem, but maybe it won't be. By 17:00 I'll already be in LJ. LP

On Monday 27.12.2011 we decided with the group to head to Stol. The forecast was more than promising, but it changed quickly and besides the sun we had wind and snow. We drove to Valvasorjev dom with the car, even though the last 100m were quite icy, but it was doable. From Valvasorjev dom to the summit the path is trodden and normally passable. I recommend crampons, just because of sliding on snow. That day there were quite a few people at the summit (besides our 4, about 6 more). We returned via the other, longer path, where we were first or the "footprints" were snowed over. Photos from our ascent can be viewed at M-foto.si

On Thursday we plan the trip to Stol. According to the weather forecast I hope we won't be in fog ? Which path should we choose for ascent and which for descent? Choosing between: Žirovniška pot Zabreška pot Are the times listed on this page realistic for an average hiker? What is the road to Valvasorjev dom like? How much gravel is there? Thanks

Alni, from MB, Stol from the Austrian side might be a good choice. You drive to Trate, approx. 1200m and then past Celovška koča to the summit. If you have fast legs, you can also hop to Svačica or Ovcji vrh.

Yes, Alni exactly that. Partially demanding shouldn't worry you. From Celovška koča to the saddle where the border is, there is a steel cable at one point solely as an aid to more easily get over the rocky step. And right below the summit of Stol, actually the saddle, there is scree terrain where you need to watch your step a bit. You can easily do the entire path from the car to the summit with poles in your hands. Good luck!

Complete beginners in hiking we did this path yesterday in about 4h (including breaks).... really super tour, incredible views almost the whole way, completely not exposed (except if you lean towards the Austrian side at the top ) at the top really divine Worth the effort! For the return we went via Zabreška path, which turned out to be a super decision, as it's a bit more gentle

At larger places you have to go "like on eggshells", otherwise it's passable.

It's true, a little caution is needed at certain places, but regardless of the type of car you're driving, you shouldn't have any problems, because today there was a little sea of cars along the path to Valvasorjev dom and in front of it.

17.11.2012 Fantastic Saturday for visiting Stol. Only the summit with strong wind reminded that without hat and gloves it no longer works. For excellent conclusion they took care at Valvasorjev dom. Unobtrusively friendly and excellent kitchen.

A few days ago we decided to visit Stol. Although the road to Valvasorjev dom was quite demanding for our steel horse, we managed it successfully. Soon it was clear that it would be windy on top, so warm winter hat and gloves came in very handy. At Valvasorjev dom tea was very welcome, not just one but two we drank. It was really wonderful day for visit, which probably won't be possible when weather conditions worsen significantly. As soon as it gets colder - summits will be covered with snow, paths won't be "attackable". We'll go again this year, but probably not possible. L.p.

Next weekend I'm heading to Stol. I'm wondering if anyone knows how close you can get to Valvasorjev dom by car, since it's a bit far from Poljana. Which trail to Stol would be the nicest in this winter time? We were thinking of going up the Žirovniška and down the Završniška back to V.dom. Thanks everyone for the info. LP, Aleš

Like this it was on Sunday. We started at the lake, to Valvasorjev dom there's little snow. Below Prižnica Saturday's rain turned to snow, and from there on there's not much new snow either. Higher up the gully variant might be better, at least it held us well on the way down. We didn't go to the hut. The road was already icy lower down, I don't know how far one could drive by car. enjoy, Dare

What is the snow situation like on Stol?
| mukica30. 04. 2013 |
On Saturday snow began a little above Prižnica, before only individual patches that don't bother. But it's south-facing, so we didn't need winter gear. Only clothes because the weather was bad

We visited Stol on Saturday - excellent tour to start the hiking season - snow is only left on the scree at the top, which you cross for 10 m length, otherwise a beautiful path and very friendly caretakers at Prešeren Lodge just below the summit. The greatest pleasure is upon return to Valvasorjev dom, where they placed loungers next to the benches like at ski resorts, so it's really a beautiful stop at the hut when arriving back in the valley.

Hardly do we get to the car and hail starts, we just managed to complete the tour. Nice scenic tour... I recommend as a circular tour via Belščica past the bivouac (in ruins) and then back to Valvasor

My son and I started from Valvasorjeva koča. The hike is pleasant. I admit, however, that we didn't have much stamina for such an ascent. But at the top a pleasant surprise awaited us, wonderful views in all directions. We couldn't get enough of looking. With full pleasant feelings we were incredibly quickly back from the top to the car. I would like to thank everyone who takes care of the marking and maintenance of the path. Best regards to all.

| wanyola18. 08. 2013 |
Finally we also stepped onto the top of Stol, yesterday, 17.8. The day was wonderful, suitable for hiking. Quite a lot of stamina is needed, because the steepness doesn't let up and demands all strength right to the top. Huge crowd on the top, barely found a spot to rest. At Prešeren hut we treated ourselves to a slightly overpriced beer-3.90 EUR, but we really needed it. On the way back to Valvasorjev dom we also had a snack in the form of ričet and it was really tasty. Then we had a good two hours drive home.

Yesterday I was on Stol. Beautiful day, but up there like an anthill. The road to Valvasorjev dom is catastrophic. Next time I'll leave the car in Žirovnica. Because parking is also very disorganized. They should already inform in the valley that it's senseless to drive up with the car.
| wanyola1. 09. 2013 |
no, the road isn't that bad, we were there on 17.8. It's a mountain road after all, we've driven on much worse ones.
| velkavrh2. 09. 2013 |
As far as I know, there's a barrier below. Already last year they said they would start closing it, because there's parking for 100 cars below, but then you have to walk to Valvasor, which seems like an hour to me. I much prefer going to Stol from Ljubelj, even though it's twice as long.
| mukica2. 09. 2013 |
@Micky, the road to Valvasorjev dom is in solid condition, they tidy it up at the end of every winter season, but given the amount of cars time does its thing... if you had asked before you would have gotten info that there's mass visitation and parking problems...everyone would like to drive higher to the starting point

Can do, but some details to skip and some things to omit... ---------------------------------------- Conditions depend very much on which day you want to go. Currently there is snow above about 1700m in Karavanke, likely to fall a bit more today. At 2200m snow should stay for a few more days, however temperatures will rise above zero, (especially when sun starts to shine) which will start to melt the snow, and it will become soft enough to walk without crampons. However, if you want to go tomorrow, I would highly recommend crampons. Ice axe is not needed, terrain from Slovenia side is not that difficult to be needing one at the moment (at least not above snow line). Shout if you need any more info. -------------------------------------- http://www.arso.gov.si/vreme/napovedi%20in%20podatki/snegraz.html http://www.arso.gov.si/vreme/napovedi%20in%20podatki/gore.html Address about snow conditions in the mountains, but you will need Google Translate (info not available on site in English). -------------------------------------- Maybe last question - do you know how is it going to be with touristic marking on the path? Because I am quite afraid that red and white circle marks will be covered by snow at higher parts... --------------------------------------- I think there should not be any problem with the markings, they should be on the trees and higher up you won't miss the path (it doesn't go anywhere else but up). It should be visible from the hikers before you (Stol is visited a lot in any conditions). I hope you can somehow drive or get a ride to Valvazorjev dom, this is the most common starting point. I recommend Žirovniška pot to the top (steeper and more direct one) and Zabreška pot on the way down (less steep, goes next to the hut, which is closed now). ------------------------------------- The forecast has changed since yesterday. Maybe snow tomorrow, no sun on Thursday. In any case - carefully!! If anyone else has something to add, please do

I was on Stol on May 23rd. Almost no snow to the hut, but if you choose the direct path to the summit, there's still quite a bit of snow in the gully, in my opinion more than 1m. The snow was surface-softened but didn't give way.

Hello. Yesterday 26.6.2014 I left hiking poles at the wood storage on the Žirovnica path and carried a couple of logs to Prešeren hut. On the way back I of course forgot the poles. On 31.10.2014 I was at Stol, I went from Žirovniška planina. The trail is fine, there was some snow in places, but easily passable, in the morning hours it's still a bit frozen, so caution is not amiss. It was a nice sunny day, nice views and real balm for the soul. I returned via the longer path, which is not so steep, to Zabreška planina. There was a bit more wind-blown snow on the trail, but trodden.

Visited Stol yesterday. Conditions in the morning were great, so at Prižnica we descended into the gully and up it to the summit. Beautifully frozen, no sinking snow. Both jumps iced over. On the way back down the gully, the sun had warmed it a bit and it softened slightly.

Hi Subaru, we probably met on the descent hope to meet again sometime somewhere. I came via Zabreznica on the Finžgar path, in the morning still nicely compact, snow from Betonska onwards. Towards the top warmer and a bit more wading. Crampons and ice axe mandatory. But too windy for the summit for me.

For a dog accustomed to long mountain paths and with appropriate fitness, suitable paths are from Valvasorjev dom and from Zelenica.

| Shuensha26. 08. 2015 |
Are there any animals grazing on this path? I'm going on Saturday with two dogs, they'll be on a leash but we all get a bit tense when we meet a cow, sheep or horse

If memory serves me right, you just pass by the fence and there is no direct contact.

| Majdag26. 08. 2015 |
.. At the hut on Žirovniška planina, there is sometimes livestock near the path. The section is short, a bit deeper into the forest and there won't be an unpleasant encounter. But it is really annoying, cows don't like dogs. I have the same problems..

Yes, at Žirovniška planina there is a fence with horses and the path goes through this fence. But as majdag wrote, the section is not long.

Hello, I'm also going to Stol for the first time on Sunday, just wondering informatively about the following. How long does it take from the parking lot in Žirovnica (apparently some inn with bears) to Valvasorjev dom? Thanks, have fun
| dkrajnc278. 09. 2015 |
And one more question buzzing in my head. On picture number 41 I have a junction and we can head towards Celovška koča. Is there then a circular path back to Valvasorjev dom or do we have to go back from Celovška along the same path to Prešernova koča. Thanks
| Daaam8. 09. 2015 |
The parking lot is another kilometer further from the hunting lodge (inn with bears) at the lake in Završnica. Normal walking to Valvasorjev dom is a bit more than an hour. If going from Stol towards Celovška koča, there's an option to descend a bit from Celovška koča and go via the climbing path to Stol. But that would already be quite a big loop.
| iUnknown26. 09. 2015 |
This looks fairly easy from the pictures. Probably could reach the summit without issue in about an hour and a half, since it says 3 hours above and only 1080 m elevation gain? Just thinking of going up tomorrow, but 1.5 hours is a bit short for a Sunday tour.
| megalodon26. 09. 2015 |
Judging by this: "The best men's time was in 2006, when the Grintovec mountain run first counted for the WMRA Cup, set by mountain running legend Jonathan Wyatt (New Zealand), who covered nearly 2000 m elevation gain in 1:15:43." it can be done much faster, in ca. 40-45 min . If 1080 m elevation is too little, start in Žirovnica and you have 1678.
| Enka26. 09. 2015 |
And if that's still not enough walking for you, you can extend to Vajnež and return via an unmarked path to Valvasorjev dom and back to the starting point
| ljubitelj gora26. 09. 2015 |
Go all the way to Struška and return back to Valvasorjev dom. Or it's better to start from the valley towards Stol.

despite forecasts of strong wind on Saturday, I set off to Stol with my daughters and a small dog. The start was quite okay, but below the summit it really blew. Real bora, cold, almost freezing, almost blew us away. But we reached the hut. Frozen, scared, windswept. Where with the dog? If outside, it would blow it away. And here comes my great praise to the hut warden. I thank him most warmly for letting us in with the dog. Thank you! We refreshed a bit, the bread was more than excellent, and then back into the bora. But the day was still nice, new experiences with a happy ending. We'll go to Stol again.

@zabava, it was really nice to read your post. Really nice that you could all go into the hut, including the dog. If the weather is such that you can stay outside, we don't insist on going into the hut anyway. But in such weather it's nice to be able to rest a bit in shelter. May there be as many such keepers as possible.

LP Tomorrow I'd like to conquer Mount Stol with my better half. We both have quite some issues with fear of heights (dizziness), so I'm looking only for easier marked paths. I'd start from Valvasorjev dom, up the Žirovniška pot, down the Zabreška pot. Is the path suitable for us? This year we've already summited Grintovec and Storžič, so fitness shouldn't be a problem. Every opinion is very welcome.

Yesterday my wife and I did the Žirovniška pot up and back. The path is not demanding. We followed the recommendations and started early, so there was shade on the Žirovniška pot in the morning, which was very good. At the top we didn't have much of a view because of the fog, but every now and then the view opened up enough for a photo. Descent without major issues.

Stol is a fantastic mountain. Already from the road it looks mighty and the pride of Slovenia. When you reach the top, the effort is rewarded. Victory is not at the top. Victory is when you safely return to the valley.

Which of the paths to Stol is the "most beautiful" and if possible so that you can then descend to the starting point via another? Is there any path to ascend to the summit along the ridge that can be seen from Lake Bled?

Thanks for the reply, what about the road to the starting point? ...it says it's usually very bad?
| anazala28. 06. 2017 |
believe me. the road is good. no problem at all. you shorten the path quite a bit, because the path to the hut is not that interesting. it's interesting from the hut onwards. when the scenic viewpoints start opening up. when looking, stop. it's good to watch your feet while walking, not around. it's not demanding. just need to be a bit careful. hiking poles, lots of water, hiking boots and you'll have a fantastic day.

Can one perhaps get to the hut by bus? 54 people. Most are elderly people. Otherwise hikers. I'm asking so that the path isn't too long and demanding due to too many hours of hiking.

Today nice early trip to Stol.. no crowds in the morning.. after 9 o'clock it started a bit.. Views perfect... A bit of snow to wash the shoes on the slope of Mali Stol.. and then from the valley between the Stols to the top there be careful.. it hasn't melted yet... so there's snow on top!! Excellent impression spoiled by the bus driver at Valvasorjev dom who blocked us in and didn't show up anywhere for about 1h! But the trip wonderful... Lp

I was on Stol today via this path. Snow is just remnants, but it was quite windy and at least while I was at the summit, fog banks were passing by, so the view was only to the Austrian side. The road to Valvasorjev dom is drivable, but quite battered.

| Gogl17. 06. 2018 |
Both are nice and good Žirovniška is steeper and you're quickly at the top. Best is up the Žirovniška and down the Zabreška for a nice loop.

| Enka18. 06. 2018 |
Exactly so, Žirovniška is super for ascent, mornings also shaded. Zabreška is a bit longer with gentler gradient, super for descent. The whole loop is wonderful.

| Vassago22. 09. 2018 |
Wonderful paths for mountain lovers, but I would change the Žirovniška pot from "easy" to "moderately difficult", namely the final part is quite steep in my opinion, which is especially noticeable if you have, say, 10-20kg in your backpack. In case of more load, the ascent will be a solid challenge. The path is also long, so the entries regarding difficulty need a slight correction. Žirovniška is easy in the initial part. I agree with the comment of Ms. Valerija112 above, who mentions a circular hike, i.e. Žirovniška up, Zabreška down. The views are spectacular. How beautiful our little country is can be seen especially from the summits. My experience regarding helmet - It's not bad to have one (I didn't have it, but I'll be more careful in the future) to avoid unpleasant moments. One single stone is enough to turn a pleasant tour into an unpleasant, potentially very dangerous experience. During the ascent, I had to dodge rolling stones from hikers ahead of me twice, one rolled quite far down the valley. Safety first, they say, right Good luck VIDEO GALLERY of the hike

| Daaam22. 09. 2018 |
Vassago- the path is easy.. even if it's steep, that doesn't mean it's difficult, but of course it's more strenuous than a flat one .. It has been explained several times on these pages that paths are classified as difficult and very difficult based on technical difficulties on the path, not how steep it is. ....but nobody carries 20 kg on their back when going to Stol....even 10 kg in normal conditions is exaggeration..
| radagremvhribe22. 09. 2018 |
the path ratings are very simplified, it's not just easy, but long and steep at times or always steep and long, in short, it simply doesn't describe everything on the path
| zavest22. 09. 2018 |
Path ratings are not simplified at all, but tied to the technical difficulty of the path, which has only three levels (the term "easy" path is not the most fortunate and is often used in multiple meanings). More about this is written in other discussions or can be quickly found with Google help. Therefore, before the trip, it is necessary to check the elevation difference and/or path length, together with the official time required for the path.

Little helper for quick assessment of path difficulty in the mountains: Easy path is a path where you don't need to use hands while walking. When such a path crosses a steep slope, it is wide enough to allow safe walking even for less experienced hikers. It only requires caution and fitness from them. There is no warning on the path. Difficult path leads through more difficult sections where we use hands for safety. Any safety devices are intended for the hiker's safety and are not necessarily needed to overcome difficult sections. At the starts of such paths, there is a warning DIFFICULT PATH on the sign. On new direction signs, there is a triangle engraved before the path name. Very difficult path is one where hand use is necessary for walking. Safety devices allow passage through difficult sections where climbing rope belay would otherwise be needed. On such a path, an ice axe is often needed, sometimes even crampons and helmet. It is suitable only for well-trained and physically fit hikers. Not suitable for people with vertigo. It is recommended to go with a mountain guide or someone who knows the path well. At the starts of such paths, there is a warning VERY DIFFICULT PATH on the sign. On new direction signs, there is a triangle with an exclamation mark before the path name.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, especially #potpodnoge for the details and explanations. I hope my comment above wasn't taken badly...Personally, I'm glad for the new knowledge, with which I'll be able to better assess the rating before the ascent. Best regards to all and safe steps.

Here, I was up there today. Road drivable almost to Valvasorjev dom, a couple of bends before the hut are icy. On Žirovniška gora, on Zabreška dolina. The path is so "mixed grill" icy in places, compacted snow in others, and completely dry in some. For such terrain it's good to pack "mini crampons" in the backpack. But when we reach snowy terrain, then happily put on the big crampons on the feet and ice axe in hand.

About 10 cm of snow on top of Stol. Wind-packed, yesterday I went up without crampons, but recommend them for the descent. Icy in places. Yesterday it was gusting fully at times, immediately greater feeling of cold, although the weather was warm and nice.

This trail described for walking.... can it be shortened any further? Can you drive closer by car? It's that I'm worried if our kids will make it to the top. I would like that. Thanks, regards
| zavest31. 07. 2019 |
You can drive minimally closer to one of the pastures (Žirovniška or Zabreška), but it has negligible impact on the total excursion time and you don't gain much. Of course, consider that the kids will be equally (or more) tired from the descent, especially if you go down the flatter "Zabreška" path. Been there, done that, and the descent was actually more strenuous for them. There are alternatives with less walking and comparable nice views along the way (Peca, Obir, above Sella Neveo...)

Uff, this road to Valvasorjev dom is quite strenuous by car! I was seriously worried about the undercarriage and shock absorbers But in the end, persistence and patience paid off. The path is nice and steadily steep, but not overly strenuous. I went down via Zabreška, the views are great and the path pleasant, only the last part drags a bit ...

Yesterday I was on the neighbor of Stol (Vajnež). If it weren't for two skiers ahead of me who had blazed the trail, I would have gotten tired quickly and possibly lost the way to the summit. I didn't need crampons or ice axe, but at least gaiters are recommended. Snow about 30cm+. In places it sank up to the knee. Good luck.

We expected this from the start of the arranged parking lot, nothing new. Someone has to cover the maintenance costs and that's fair. In the past there were no cars but hikers still went to the mountains anyway. The old times are returning, if someone doesn't like it they just don't go there..

You're right, we won't go to those parts anymore but is there really such a problem with this parking lot? Last year I was there quite often and always found a spot to park, it was never 100% full..

Access by car to Valvasorjev dom is chargeable. There is now a barrier in the valley. Payment of 10€ is possible by card, a bit lower at the parking lot also in cash. The forest road is (consequently) also nicely maintained.

| Kafetarca4. 08. 2022 14:43:02 |
In a way, I welcome the fee for using the forest road, because there used to be really terrible crowds there and parking everywhere... Obviously, most people like to park as high as possible for those two hours of walking. Down by the lake it's 50 cents per hour, which I think is a perfectly fine price, and there's also a nice trail to the hut, so no panic at all.

If I read correctly, they collect toll from May onwards to October. From November to end of April the barrier is raised. You can park also a couple of 100 m before Valvasorjev dom or even lower along the road.

I was up yesterday. Quite a few markings have already faded. In the second third of the path, soft snow starts where you sink in. In the dwarf pine belt it sinks in deeply (gaiters mandatory). The last 200 meters of elevation have just right icy snow. Crampons not mandatory, but they make walking much easier. Almost no wind. The descent back was also unpleasant due to the strong thaw.

From picture 22 onwards, the "trail" usually goes straight up or a bit to the side. Always take crampons with you. Last time there were holes from hikers between the dwarf pines, so I preferred to descend the wide gully, you come out at the benches. No jumps. And down about 200-300 m above Završnica there is a prohibition sign to Valvasorjev dom, early afternoon I didn't notice anything stuck on the window from the rangers. They have already tilted the sign.

Hello, I'm interested if the path is also suitable for a medium-sized dog and approximately in which months there is no snow? Thanks
| funnyboy4. 05. 2024 14:21:29 |
The path is suitable for a dog if it is sufficiently fit or able to cover such a long path. For a while, you walk on sand or stones, which can irritate dog's paws. The snow will melt quickly now, if there is no new snowfall it will soon be snow-free. Then until the first snowfall, usually in October or November.
