Access to starting point:
From the highway Ljubljana - Jesenice, we take the exit Lesce and follow the road ahead in the direction of Žirovnica and Jesenice. After a few km of driving, we will get to a crossroad, where the road to Žirovnica and Moste branches off to the right (from the direction of Jesenice left). Just a few meters ahead, at the next crossroad, we turn left to Moste (right Žirovnica). Further, we drive past a monument to fallen soldiers, where the road starts ascending a hill below the railway track. At the top of the slope, we turn right (at the sign Vila Karin), and we continue driving towards Završniško jezero and Valvasorjev dom. The road then flattens and brings us to a crossroad, where the road to Valvasorjev dom branches off to the left. We take the mentioned road (straight Koča pri izviru Završnice), which starts first gently, then steeper and steeper, ascending an occasionally quite rough road (the steepest parts are asphalted). Higher up, the road brings us to a somewhat larger crossroad, where we continue left in the direction of Potoška planina (right Doslovška planina). The road then flattens and a little further brings us to the next crossroad. This time we continue slightly right in the direction of Valvasorjev dom (slightly left Ajdna and Potoška planina) and drive on a steeper road all the way to the mentioned dom. We park on one of the parking lots by the road near the mountain hut; parking in front of the hut is permitted only for guests.
From Poljane (crossroad before Završniško jezero) to Valvasorjev dom is 5 km.
Route description:
From Valvasorjev dom we go right on the footpath in the direction of Stol. The path soon goes into the forest, where it slightly ascends and brings us to a smaller junction, where we continue right. The path then brings us out of the forest, where it crosses the slopes below Monštranca. This gentle and partly panoramic path, which a little further crosses a short belt of forest, we follow to the junction on Žirovniška planina.
We continue slightly right in the direction of "Stol - Zabreška pot" (left Stol Žirovniška pot) on an initially hard-to-follow path that soon enters the forest. This is followed by approximately half an hour of walking on a path that mostly crosses the southern slopes of Stol. Just a little further from the place where the path from Zabreška planina joins us from the right, the marked path leading to Stol starts to ascend more steeply. A little further, we come out of the forest onto Stara planina, on which stands the newer "Betonska bajta". Behind the mentioned bajta, the path turns slightly right and starts to ascend even more steeply, first through the forest, then over increasingly panoramic slopes that are partly overgrown with dwarf pines. The path then quickly brings us past the pleasant rest area "Pri Janezu" to Finžgarjeva skala (here we will notice auricula growth in the spring months). The path, which continues on an increasingly panoramic grassy slope, turns higher quite to the left and occasionally starts to fade. Further ahead, we already see Prešernova koča in front of us, to which we climb in under 30 minutes of further walking.
From the koča we continue slightly right, where past the sign in a few steps we climb to the summit of Mali Stol. A short descent follows and the path brings us to the saddle between both Stols, where there is also a marked junction. We continue in the direction of Stol (right Celovška koča and Zelenica) on the transverse path, which after 10 minutes of further walking brings us to the highest peak of the Karawanks.
Valvasorjev dom - Žirovniška planina 20 minutes, Žirovniška planina - Stara planina 1:00, Stara planina - Prešernova koča 1:45, Prešernova koča - Stol 15 minutes.

Hi! I'm planning a trip to Stol this Sunday. Which trail is nicer - Zabreška or Žirovniška, or which is more suitable for descent? And what about the road, can you still drive by car to the hut? Thanks, LP. Darja

Up via Žirovniška, down via Zabreška. Both are beautiful and steep.

27.7.2007 We managed the ascent to Stol in wonderful weather. However, in the end my husband and I regretted not going first via the Žirovnica path and then down via Zabreška, but we went both ways via Zabreška. It was gorgeous, especially at Prešernova koča. I recommend to mountain lovers. GOOD LUCK!

On Veliki Stol, it happens that a dozen heroes sit right at the top among the rocks and boulders, treating themselves to a snack and pleasant sunbathing, while others can only watch and hope that they can pass by the aforementioned "ill-fated peak owners" to approach the very top and treat themselves to a view of the other side. Guys and girls; even if you've conquered the Stol summit, it doesn't mean you have it rented for the whole day! No matter how much you want it, you simply CANNOT rent it! (some things from happy communism have thankfully remained..(common ownership)).

Hello! I'm wondering how much snow is still left on the path to Stol from the Austrian direction via the north face? Thanks for the reply and best regards. Matej

I don't know where the path runs, but however you look from the top of Stol towards the north face of Karavanke, you don't spot even a patch.. Moreover, on Sunday I met many hikers at the summit (even some parents with kids) who had climbed via the north face, so the route should be dry.

On Saturday, 12.7.2008, a veritable little procession of people was heading towards Stol. At the top, fog greeted us, at Prešernova it was still quite nice but windy. Anyway, the tour is very undemanding (technically), but requires fitness. With the dog, we needed 1 hour 45 minutes to the summit (from Valvasorjev dom). LP

Yes, really you arrive very fast if you have some fitness. I got up in 1 hour and a half of walking, here and there I also stopped a bit and looked at the wonderful view

What are the conditions on Stol? Is there any snow? What time is best to be at the summit, because of fog I think? Thanks for the answer

I was on Stol last Thursday, via Žirovniška pot. There was only a trace of snow left. It poses no problem. As for fog, who could predict the weather. Last week, for example, it cleared up in the afternoon and made a beautiful day.

I'm interested where I can get info or if anyone knows what the current conditions on Stol are like? Is it passable via Žirovniška and Zabreška paths at this time even without crampons and ice axe? If anyone has possibly gone there recently, hiking advice is welcome too. Thanks, best regards

Stol is high mountain and not Šmarna gora. I wouldn't set off up there at this time of year without crampons (at least put them in your backpack) if I were you.

Stol is dangerous after snowfall also due to avalanches, and towards the summit it's very cold now. Possibly end of the week, but with full winter gear. Best regards.

Katja.....from what I see through the window it looks quite snowy. If it's trodden I think no problem, but it's advisable to have crampons with you. You can try calling the numbers below (at Valvasorjev dom ask the caretaker if he has any info on the trodden path (he's very friendly). Caretaker: Emil Grah Hut phone: 051/328-648, 051 367 217, 04/53-15-544 E-mail: info@pdradovljica.si

Trodden and trampled already on 10.12 and 13.12., there were quite a few of us at the summit. Up to "prižnica" not much snow and occasionally smooth rocks are a problem. They have also skied between Stolmi, that's where the main track runs. Snow is dry, between Stolmi hard crust, then some powder. To the summit via normal approach possible without crampons and ice axe. The more direct variant is more tricky, on some parts rocks are icy, then some snow. In places wind-blown to hard. Crampons and ice axe almost mandatory for such variant. Regardless of current conditions, I think additional winter gear (ironware and more belongs on every tour, locally we can always be surprised. If fitness is an issue and the body can't carry that extra kilo of weight, better stay behind. I plan skiing on Sunday, if avalanche conditions don't worsen (due to snowfall on Saturday), tomorrow is still all open. But it will be cold.

Big thanks to everyone for the reply.. no problem, we'll choose another location this weekend, and Stol will come another time. Nice hiking weekend

| stefanb18. 12. 2009 |
Conditions today despite the cold (which with proper gear is no problem) excellent. Not too much snow, in drifted areas it sinks at most to the top of gaiters. Few such spots. Road to Valvasorjev dom drivable with good winter tires, with chains no problem, 4x4 goes like a shot, snow on the road is dry and winter tires grip. At least 3 groups on Stol today. On the last third of the summer path towards the hut (in the area where the ridge begins) caution needed, some parts completely icy (risk of fall due to slipping). This will be relevant also after tomorrow's snowfall, when new snow covers those spots. Best route choice still between the Stol peaks. If too much snow falls, Stol will no longer be as friendly as today. The path crosses several avalanche paths and with proper snow cover and current iciness of certain gullies, avalanches can be expected. Otherwise Stol with proper winter gear and favorable avalanche conditions is a real gem regarding views (over our country and north). Worth visiting. Katja, if experienced in winter conditions, definitely recommend, this winter still.

No problem for Stol if you start early enough, as it takes about 5 hours total. There won't be sun, but that's not the point of hiking in the mountains anyway. The point is recharging the inner batteries Lp Bagi

Went down this path on Saturday...I think it would be ok..it's easy but still a medium-long path.

| gti3. 08. 2011 |
The path has over 1000 m elevation gain and is marked 3h30 + descent. If he has already done it (that much elevation), then you know there won't be problems, but so far I've seen VERY few 4-year-olds who would do this "with pleasure" or could manage it?! And there are so many other nice hikes that aren't even strenuous, not to mention that this is a shortcut to them resenting the mountains...
| Janiel743. 08. 2011 |
I agree with GTI: The Žirovniška pot is still nicer, but less suitable for a 4-year-old in my opinion.
| ninooos3. 08. 2011 |
bogdančk, depends on how fit the 4-year-old is? We conquered Stol last year with a 4-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy, up the Žirovniška pot, down the Zabreška and it took 5h 30min. This year (5-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy) we needed 6 hours for the same path (yes, fitness dropped ). But both kids are enthusiastic hikers and willing to walk and fight all day for pride at the top .

you know best yourself how many you've already taken to the mountains. For unaccustomed, the elevation gain of about 1000 m can be a problem. I have slightly older ones and in spring I start getting them used to easier tours, mid-season Stol, Begunjščica, Prehodavci,... at the end of the season i.e. beginning of September a bit harder like Prisojnik, Jalovec, Razor, Škrlatica,... if you gradually build their fitness, then no problem. I would start with Mojstrovka in your place, where my boys were first when they were three or four years old and it left them the imprint of hiking for which they are still grateful to me today. But the Triglav tour via Plamenice at the end of last season was a fiasco, because a little below the top of the north face, the younger one felt sick. After 5 min talk we all turned back (I was sorry because of the gorgeous weather) and returned to Vrata via the same path, without bad mood and anger. (the little one caught a virus). At their request we had to complete this path and indeed in much worse weather last week. You know the child best yourself, don't force it, because the mountains will wait, but it can quickly happen to you that due to too much desire for the summit the whole thing gets messed up for the child forever and you'll be hiking alone

Why is he "fasal virozo"? -Because his resistance dropped. Why did it drop? Because you pushed him harder than an adult. And why did you push him like that? You don't even know yourself.. Will you wonder? Probably only that, with what comment to hit back...

heinz As I see you don't know about children's contagious illnesses that spread quickly in school. I assume you have no kids, because otherwise you wouldn't write such nonsense. I see you're totally uninformed about the virus, which isn't caught by hiking in the mountains. You also don't know that kids who ski all year round have more stamina than adults who work weekdays and go to our beautiful mountains on weekends. Unfortunately for you, only your dog remains as companion, who obviously helps you get home more than once and can't tell you it's hard for him, even though he has four-wheel drive If you have time, or rather if your quadruped can take it, come Sunday at 3:30 to Vrata we're going to Škrlatica, don't blame the weather

On Thursday we plan the trip to Stol. According to the weather forecast I hope we won't be in fog ? Which path should we choose for ascent and which for descent? Choosing between: Žirovniška pot Zabreška pot Are the times listed on this page realistic for an average hiker? What is the road to Valvasorjev dom like? How much gravel is there? Thanks
| Bojan_A17. 07. 2012 |
Up via Žirovniška, down via Zabreška. The other way around is unpleasant. To Valvasorjev dom it's all gravel all the way. Times are completely realistic.

The Žirovniška path is steeper, so it is suitable for ascent, Zabreška for descent. The road to Valvasor is generally completely OK road and does not cause problems for any car.

You can reach Valvasorjev dom with a personal car and a smaller bus. The path is not steep. Also suitable for school children. The Žirovska path is a bit steeper, but elementary school children still reach the top. Only if they have the will. More guides, fewer children, with 20 minutes difference it will be fine so there won't be a crowd at the top. The Austrian wall is precipitous. Also on the Slovenian one I recommend more attention.

Hey. We two went up today to the hut at the top of Stol, no one there, so we sat and the sun warmed us. Hut closed, but we two were open. Now go down too, about 2 hours to Valvasor hut. On the way it's great.... good it was!

Hello... today I returned from Stol via this path... the path is dry and nice. There is fallen trees in places along the path, but you can go around. In the lower part, a landslide has crossed the path and it needs to be crossed.
| sAleska26. 05. 2019 |
This afternoon I went along this path. Up to the saddle where the path turns left up towards the hut, you have to cross 4 snowfields. In the southern snow you sink in over the knee.
| Ficla9. 05. 2020 |
There is no snow on the path to the hut at Stol. Then you have to cross one larger snow patch to the top of Stol, but it causes no problems. I wouldn't recommend low hiking shoes though, as snow gets into the shoes. The hut was not open. But it was a beautiful warm day

First time on Stol, super path, real mountain highway. Markings everywhere, but we didn't find the pole to carry to Prešernova koča. And the sun warmed us intensely all day.
