Access to starting point:
Leave the Graz/Vienna motorway at the Lafnitztal exit, then drive along the Burgenland Straße. In the town of Oberwart, follow the signs for Železno / Eisenstadt, leave the Burgenland Straße at the exit for Rechnitz and Lockenhaus. When we arrive in the town of Lockenhaus, go right towards Rechnitz, and we park at one of the parking lots in the center of Lockenhaus.
Route description:
From the starting point, head to Geschriebensteinstraße, initially walking on the sidewalk, passing the church and monastery on the right. A bit further at the last houses the sidewalk ends, continue along the main road to the left serpentine. At the start of the serpentine, signs for Geschriebenstein summit and Margarethenwarte tower direct straight onto the forest road, continue along it.
A few minutes further the road forks, take the right (marked for Geschriebenstein, slightly left Margarethenwarte). Shortly cross a stream, join the parallel road from Lockenhaus on the other side.
Follow transverse ascent on the road, shortly further right from the road to cart track which higher crosses the road we left. Return to road near junction joining path over Weidriegel summit, continue slightly left following yellow-red markers.
Continue following markers at junctions, ascend forest trail crossing first macadam road, then wider asphalt road.
After crossing asphalt road continue on narrower macadam, follow yellow-red signs at junctions. Higher road gently descends, from larger junction go right downhill. Dozens of steps later left to cart track ascending gently, ends then short steeper forest path. Reach rest area with benches/tables to another cart track, follow yellow-red at next junctions.
Some right crossings follow, cart track left steep then straight on marked path zigzagging beside, rejoins higher, continue right. Further junction, straight across wider road to narrower ascending transversely right, reach ridge join path from Geschriebenstein Passhöhe.
Go left, gently ascend forested ridge. Soon right joins path from Rechnitz, follow path steepening slightly at end to summit on Austria-Hungary border.
