Access to starting point:
Between Trenta and Bovec, in the village of Soča, a road branches off to Lepena. We follow this fully asphalted road to the parking lot at the mountain hut Dom v Lepeni.
Route description:
From the Dr. Klement Jug House in Lepena we continue on a wide marked path in the direction of the Krn Lakes. After a few minutes of walking, the wide and not too steep path splits into two parts. The left one, which is somewhat steeper, is the usual one; the right one, gentler and somewhat longer, is suitable for small children and the elderly. Both paths ascend mostly through the forest to the upper station of the cargo cableway and cross each other several times along the way. From the upper station of the cargo cableway, we continue on the same path, which gently ascends along the wide transport road that quickly brings us to the snow height measurement (every year in April). From here the road starts to descend and brings us quickly past the turn-off to Velika Baba to the next junction, where we leave the road and continue left downhill on the footpath that in a few minutes brings us to the mountain hut Dom pri Krnskih jezerih (if we continue on the road, we bypass the mountain hut).
From the mountain hut we continue straight in the direction of Krn and Krn Lake on a gentle path to which soon joins the path that bypasses the mountain hut. We continue past the shepherd's hut, behind which we arrive at the next junction, where we again continue in the direction of Krn (left to Bogatin, Mali Šmohor and Dom na Komni).
The gentle path then brings us after a further few minutes to the pearl of the Krn mountain range. In front of us we see Krn Lake and beside it inviting meadows for resting.

Last Saturday I was up there for the first time, we went from Lepena, it's an excellent trip, too bad the hut at the lakes wasn't open

Can someone provide information on what the path from the Dom pri Krnskih to Velika Baba is like?
| Gost17. 07. 2007 |
The path is marked as pathless terrain. Orientation is quite demanding, especially when descending to the other side - as if you wanted to go towards Komna afterwards. But up there it's very beautiful and the views are stunning. You need a sense of orientation and experience with pathless terrain and finding paths and passages. Good luck!

When I was at Krnsko jezero last year, I saw that the path was marked. Probably they marked it recently?

I wonder if it's possible to reserve beds in the Dom pri Krnskih jezerih and if dogs are welcome. Is it necessary to bring bedding (sometimes they require it). Please respond as soon as possible - I would like to reserve for this weekend, in 4 days. Thanks

I think there will be a traditional hike to Krn on 15.11.2008 in memory of the events from the First World War. Will this hike follow the same path as described in this route description?
| triglavski1. 11. 2008 |
This concerns the 11th hike and event "Krn - Memorial Hike 1918-2008", which this year marks the 90th anniversary of the end of WWI. Thus, on 11.11.2008 at 11:00 on the summit of Krn there will be a short ceremony with wreath-laying for the victims of the Krn battlefield. If weather conditions - snow permit, this hike will be carried out from planina Kuhinja. The main ceremony with hike will be on 15.11.08, (Attention) the celebration by Krnsko jezero will be this year at 13:00. Hikes will be conducted under suitable weather - snow conditions from the direction of Bohinj (From Savica) via Komna, from Lepena to Krnsko jezero and also from planina Kuhinja via Krnska škrbina, the latter only in fine weather without snow. Anyway yes, to answer the question, the main hike is from Lepena to Krnsko jezero.

Thanks for the reply. Since I'm from Ljubljana, I'd prefer to go from Bohinj. How many hours of walking from Bohinj to Krn Lakes (this interests me to know when most will start from Savica waterfall)? Does someone perhaps know when the "start" from Savica will be? On the official site of the Alpine Association of Slovenia there is thus misleading information (see EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES), where it says 09.11.08 Memorial Hike - Krn.
| triglavski2. 11. 2008 |
I trust the hike's organizing committee, so 15.11 will already be the correct date. At PD Nova Gorica when planning their hikes, they probably didn't have the final date yet, so they simply chose the closest date to 11.11 which is anyway the proper anniversary. The hike from Bohinj only under favorable weather or snow conditions, I think 7 o'clock would be quite suitable for the start, possibly even earlier, since Dom na Komni and the hut under Bogatin are open, so there will be enough time for a stop. Regarding snow conditions, they will know best at the Dom na Komni, a day before the hike.

Isn't the start at 7:00 a bit early. From 7:00 to 13:00 (celebration start time) is 6 hours? I assume one could cover the path in 3 hours without much effort!? Once again the question; do you perhaps know how long it takes to walk from Savica Waterfall to Krn Lakes in normal conditions? I also received the official response from Planinsko društvo Nova Gorica: "Dear, this year in memory of the 90th anniversary of the end of 1st World War there is a smaller celebration on Tuesday, 11.11. at 11 o'clock on the top of Krn. The main organizer thereof is the association Mali vojni muzej from Bohinjska Bistrica. At that time no group hike is organized. The easiest access is from village Krn, where above the village there is parking space, from there another three hours walk to the top. Written applies to summer conditions, in case of snow, it is necessary to consider that the parking itself above the village is at height 1000 m.a.s.l. Probably you meant the celebration that takes place every year on the shore of Krnsko jezero, this will also this year be at Krnsko jezero and that on Saturday, 15.11. at 13:00. Easiest access is from Lepena and that's approx. 1.30h. Mountain hut will be open already at least one day before. If you want more information call during office hours, Tuesday or Thursday from 15 to 18. Best regards.

| fpetel13. 11. 2008 |
In normal conditions to Dom na Komni 2.5 hours. To Bogatinsko sedlo further 1.5 hours, to Krn Lakes another 1.5 hours. Thus to Krn Lakes with breaks approximately 6 hours walking (for a group of course). But I believe you are capable of covering the path (with sufficient fitness running) in less than 4 hours.

| triglavski13. 11. 2009 |
Snow in the upper part, otherwise at Krnsko jezero there's about half a meter of snow, the hut opened yesterday, the path is trodden, gaiters highly recommended. Probably cloudy and foggy, possible some precipitation.

do you think the path is suitable for a child and if crampons are not needed,
| triglavski13. 11. 2009 |
The path is nice, many children have already walked it, of course most in dry conditions, I even like it better in snow, regarding crampons I think they won't be needed, I've never walked with them to K. lake but I've been up there many times in winter. Count on about 2 hours up, a bit less down.

I was also there last year in August at the Krn lakes and I can tell you that the path itself is easy and simple. It took me a good four hours up and down altogether. There was a crowd in the hut, but the service was very fast, and the staff friendly and obliging. We'll come again

If you're going to the mountains with kids, it's good to check at the right place, e.g. by phone at the hut. Otherwise check this forum under current conditions-Krnsko jezero, you'll see the note that the path is snow-free.

On Wednesday I was hiking around Vršič, I was at Slemenova Špica, and around there there are still plenty of golden trees, both larches and beeches. Really less than last week, when my husband and I went towards Mojstrovka (not to the top, because we doubted our fitness and it would be irresponsible to walk a path where the step was no longer secure) - but I'm sure you'll enjoy the wealth of autumn colors and the thoughts of the tour will warm you even in winter, even if you're not sitting by a warm fireplace. I wish you a nice hike and greet you warmly, Nacka

With Schatzijem we went on our first joint trip to the mountains. As a regular mountain visitor, I always rely on your path descriptions and recommended equipment, so I must scold you here. Namely, the destination was chosen by my Big Daddy, who convinced me along the way that no equipment is recommended on your site. Mistake! For a safe ascent and descent, you definitely need poles - the scree on the path does not ensure a safe step, some rocks are very slippery, and it's certainly better for your ankles to help yourself with them. Continuing... because I trust my Korenjak, I left the poles at home, but I soon regretted it badly. On the way, a real little battle for dominance broke out between us - I claimed that hribi.net recommends the use of poles for every even the simplest hike... he - oops - back to me that your itinerary is spot on and that you don't mention poles. In short - relying on your sensitivity cost me dearly - the lost bet actually brought me a lot of enjoyment with the views, but still I must kindly remind here that poles are really N-E-E-D-E-D. Thank you for taking my comment with the appropriate reserve and know that it is also meant as a tip for fresh couples who sometimes like to step off the beaten path into the bushes.

| Big Daddy19. 09. 2021 11:26:15 |
@ urnebes I'm really glad about your adventure! As you wrote, poles are needed because of the scree. But I'm glad that they didn't write it on hribi.net (THANKS ) Because when the bet fell, you fell too. It's true that you are a real mountaineer and that hribi.net takes good and safe care of you... but they also take care of us less experienced hikers it was fantastic, I recommend the trip to everyone, just bring poles to make the path more pleasant. Spice up your evenings with some bet, even at the expense of hribi.net... just read it well beforehand

Hello! Last week we went for the first time from Lepena towards Krnsko jezero. At an altitude just over 1000 meters we spotted a bunch of poles leaning under an overhanging rock by the path. Does anyone know what that's for? (Probably not supporting the rock). It looks like an older thing, as some poles are already disintegrating. I would upload photos, but I can't manage it. Can someone help me?
