Access to starting point:
Between Trenta and Bovec, at the village of Soča, the road to Lepena branches off. We follow this fully asphalted road to the parking lot at the Dom v Lepeni.
Route description:
From the Dom dr. Klementa Juga in Lepena we continue on a wide marked path in the direction of the Krn Lakes. After a few minutes of walking, the wide and not too steep path splits into two parts. The left one, which is a bit steeper, is the usual way; the right one, less steep and a bit longer, is suitable for small children and the elderly. Both paths mostly ascend through the forest to the upper station of the cargo cableway and cross each other a few times on the way. From the upper station of the cargo cableway, we continue on the same path, which gently ascends on the wide transport road that quickly brings us to the snow height measurement (every year in April). From here the road starts to descend and leads us past the turn-off to Velika Baba, quickly bringing us to the next junction where we leave the road and continue left downhill on the footpath that in a few minutes brings us to the Dom pri Krnskih jezerih (if we continue on the road, we bypass the mountain hut).

The trip can be extended to the following destinations: The lake Krnsko jezero ( 20 min),
Koča pod Bogatinom (3 h),
Dom na Komni (3 h 15 min),
Planina na Polju ( 50 min),
Rdeči rob (3 h 45 min),
Mali Šmohor (2 h),
Veliki Šmohor,
Bogatin (2 h 30 min),
Vogel (above Lepena) (2 h),
Lanževica (3 h),
Mahavšček (3 h),
Veliki Lemež (2 h 30 min),
Batognica,
Vrh nad Peski (2 h 45 min),
Gomiščkovo zavetišče na Krnu (3 h),
Krn (3 h)

Very nice. Can't wait to go myself. Thanks for the description.

For today's goal we chose Krnsko jezero. Road to Dom Dr. Klementa Juga is dry. Start of ascent also dry, at 1100m snow begins. Path mostly in shade, but we caught some sun rays anyway. Best regards Joži&Miha

Hi! Does anyone know the path from Lepena to Krn Lakes and then onwards to Komna? Or from the opposite direction: Savica Waterfall-Komna-Krn Lakes-Lepena... Basically I know the starting point and goal, I just want to know how the path goes in between? Thanks

How many times do I have to press copy/paste? I understand questions like "how much snow is still on the path", but this is something else. Get yourself guides and maps. If you know how to use a computer, you'll learn mountaineering literature too. Why did the authors bother describing mountain areas then?! Read, observe, plan, learn ... Do you really need everything served on a platter?! ------------------------------ Everything you're asking you'll find in this guide: http://www.emka.si/artikel/354131/Julijske-Alpe-planinski-vodnik There are plenty of guides. You just need to pick them up. http://www.pzs.si/index.php?stran=Trgovina&kat=1 http://www.sidarta.si/gornistvo.html And also maps, which are an excellent (if not essential) complement to the guides: http://www.pzs.si/index.php?stran=Trgovina&kat=6 To you and all who ask similar questions: mountaineering websites are just a complement to the mentioned literature (don't forget courses on safe movement in the mountains), by no means the only source that enables safe movement in the mountains.

Gorazd G., bravo! Finally a sensible reply to all those who, with such an abundance of guidebooks and good websites, can't be bothered to search and study the tour.

Gorazd's reply seems quite arrogant to me, because I'm also interested in the mentioned trail from Komna to Krn, but unfortunately it's not among the online descriptions, and again I'm not such a mountaineer to buy literature that's not exactly cheap for many. It's similar to if on a forum where people exchange cooking recipes someone blurted: go buy "Cookbook" and you'll find everything inside. Hellooo ? The propaganda you do for buying hiking guides is a bit exaggerated. Maybe someone can still be found who wouldn't mind describing the mentioned trail. After all, that's why we have the internet and forums, right ? Anyway, I'm going up tomorrow and maybe the quickest is that I'll describe the mentioned trail myself then. What do we want Karhu, some think forums are for sales propaganda and their big ego...

Mountaineering guides do not just describe specific paths, you can find another 100 and 100 useful tips inside, including those that can save your life, so the price compared to the value of the guide is completely irrelevant.

| Kriška5. 08. 2009 |
Well, if you already think money for a mountaineering guide is money thrown away (?!), then at least get a mountaineering map of the area you intend to visit. The path you're asking about is also marked on it.

There are also libraries. There are really many guides available and personally, when I'm not quite sure about the purchase, I borrow it first... This could be a solution also for those who go to the mountains rarely. Otherwise, a good guide and map are also indispensable for me when planning tours.

Hey folks, on hribi.net you have pretty good path descriptions, if you can't find your way it's your own business. Otherwise, go up to Krn Lakes, it's very nice

Very nice hike, steep ascending path but at the top it all pays off with a beautiful view of the lake, even though we got caught by a few raindrops. The staff at the hut very friendly and helpful.

Come on, you buy a map, it costs about 8 euros and you have peace. The path from Komna to Krn is such that you can't miss it. Everything is written, everything is drawn. For a better idea of the tour, Geopedija "helps" me. And how do you think foreigners hike our hills, from memory?

Hasn't anyone described the path from Savica Waterfall to Dom pri Krnskih jezerih yet? I'm also heading there, I have a guidebook, but better to have one more description than too few

My wife and I also went 25/07 from Lepena to Krn, slept in the hut at the lakes. Friendly staff, quick service, very varied offer, atmosphere in the hut really nice mountaineering I'm from central Slovenia and to G. Van Sims and similar minded I inform that I'm not a local drunkard as he labels some visitors to mountain huts ......Madam....etc

We also visited the hut at Krn Lakes and were somewhat surprised by the number of people up there. The path itself is easy and sufficiently well marked. I must praise the hut staff, who were very friendly and helpful, which is almost a rarity among mountain hut keepers according to my experiences. We'll come back. We also walked to the lake, where there were also swarms of visitors. In short, a beautiful and well-visited location, suitable for everyone.

Hello Will the road to Lepena from Bovec direction be open by Saturday? Different data are appearing.
| miri7. 11. 2012 |
Thanks. On TV there was some kind of detour.
| GregorC7. 11. 2012 |
On the promet.si website it says that the Bovec - Trenta road is closed due to road surface collapse near Trenta.
| jax7. 11. 2012 |
No, mirijevo question was of course not nonsensical and the answer hasn't been given here yet. It's about where the road collapse happened. It was said to be in Trenta, and the road to Lepena branches off from Vršiška quite a bit before Trenta (from Bovec direction). In that case it should be passable. On the other hand, on promet.si the closure sign is marked right after Bovec. Now I'm not quite clear either how far one can go and where it becomes impassable. Anyway, in any case within a couple of days at least a temporary detour will probably be established.

| IgorZlodej7. 11. 2012 |
The road from Bovec to the beginning of Lepena is passable, but not to Lepena, because the road is undermined and closed. The road in the direction of Trenta was washed away at the turnoff for Berebica (Podskalar).

Yeah, I'm also wondering if one can get to the Dom v Lepeni.

You can of course reach Dom dr. Klementa Juga v Lepeni. By road, currently on foot, from Trenta or from Dom pri Krnskih jezerih. Some hunting or shepherd path can also be found.

What about via Vršič, can one get to Lepena?
| turbo9. 11. 2012 |
On promet.si they say the following: Gorenjska and Northern Primorska - complete closures: - on the regional road Trenta - Bovec, subsidence near Trenta; - RT Mojstrana - Vrata, damaged road surface; - RT Krnica - Radovna, subsidence

@tulipan replies in the conditions section that from the Gorenjska direction to Lepena you can only go via Predel, thus past Trbiž and Rablje...
| potočan9. 11. 2012 |
I just called AMZS and they told me that it's possible to reach Lepena from the Gorenjska direction only via Predil.

According to the latest information, the celebration should be at the Klementa Juga hut

On the main road in Trenta, an emergency bypass has been arranged, so access via Vršič is also possible (PN 9 November 2012). Of course the road is not officially open, as stated by Mayor Siniša Germovšek.

| arejc109. 11. 2012 |
You can also get to Lepena from the Trenta direction. I've been driving on this road myself since Tuesday. I don't know about the conditions on Vršič. The celebration will be by the lake.

What are the conditions like now, has anyone been? How is it around the lake I mean. The hut is closed as I read.

Yes, I was there on Saturday, 16.5., no problems, all paths dry from Lepena to planina Duplje and towards Bogatinsko sedlo to Bogatin. The hut is closed though. Didn't go to see the lakes this time. Spring green-colored idyll, really nice.

The path from Lepena to Krn Lakes is trodden, are crampons needed? Thanks

The road to Lepena was nicely passable to the hut - freshly plowed. Despite solid snow cover depth (snow gauge shows 100cm) - new snow up there half a meter, now there is a solid trodden trail to Lepena.

Greetings! I almost don't dare to ask, given the above comments, but anyway..... The path to Lepena is probably drivable, but what about to the hut? Is it open, or how will it be for the May 1st holidays?
| julius23. 04. 2017 |
In the section: "news and articles", there is an explanation from PD Nova Gorica that all three huts will be closed for the May 1st holidays. The road to Lepena (700m/nv) is drivable.
| brarut23. 04. 2017 |
We inform you that during the May 1st holidays our stations: Dom dr. Klementa Juga in Lepena, Planinski dom pri Krnskih jezerih and Gomiščkovo zavetišče on Krn due to very bad weather forecast will remain CLOSED. We will reopen them in the season. We will inform you about the exact opening dates. We wish you safe steps.

On Saturday we went from Lepena and looked for the described fork at the start of the route... in vain. Apparently the steep path hasn't existed for years and there's only one path?
| Lunatic2. 08. 2017 |
You can't miss the left one...
| Enka2. 08. 2017 |
Well, given that based on this description we expected a marked junction, we really weren't paying attention to any "hidden" paths. There is no marked junction for the left and right path. However, later on the path we several times came across a path branching onto or off our path, but all junctions were deliberately blocked with thinner logs and branches, so we concluded that it concerns path(s) that are no longer used.
| Lunatic2. 08. 2017 |
There is no real junction...
| Enka2. 08. 2017 |
Yes, next time we will look for it then

Just nicely along the marked path. You gain nothing in time. So why would you?
