Today on Vrtača via central gully. Start from hut at Zelenica in the dark, snow held to summit, gully nicely filled, we climbed right variant. Besides us another 4 ski tourers on Vrtača. Descent on south side to hut at Završnica source, in forest snow breaks to a.., rest ok. At Zelenica today lots of ski tourers, and on Begunjščica via Šentanc and central... all in all good weekend at Zelenica

Does anyone go to Vrtača from Ljubelj these days - how much snow, is winter gear needed. Thanks for answer.

Asking again, what are conditions from Ljubelj these days - old snow probably gone, how much new? Thanks for info.

Despite meteorological summer, conditions are fully winter.
Today morning snow started at hut on Zelenica. On screes over 20cm. Path through screes interrupted by many fresh avalanches. There snow over a meter.
I rather turned to Srednji vrh, as I felt something might come from slopes.
Landslide areas on scree fields.1

Well I don't know, to me that crossing of Vrtača slope seems most avalanche-exposed... And even if you turn only to Srednji vrh.zavijanje z očmi

Today from Tinčkova hut over Smokuška planina past Hut at Završnica source (now open weekdays too) to Vrtača. Path ok, more caution if grass and rocks wet, which they are early. Summit book filled to last corner... Regardsnasmeh

This afternoon I'm heading to Vrtača. I've been up only once before. Unfortunately a 10-minute hail at the summit, then sun again, back past the hut at Završnica spring. That scree downhill really destroys boots. I appeal to Vrtača keepers to bring a new summit book. Old one full and shredded - thanks.
Views in front of the hut on Vrtača towards the mighty Begunjščica. This scree field attracts me immensely.1
I go past the Vrtača hut through the scree.2
Past the hut on Zelenica towards Vrtača. This is the branch-off for Palec and Zelenjak. If we don't know the branch-off we miss it - it is not marked.3
Soon we sight the target - the second highest mountain of the Karawanks.4
We cross this scree slope.5
Branch-off to Vrtača.6
We sight Stol.7
This is Srednji vrh.8
We are before the ascent to Vrtača.9
On the left side there are these notches.10
We walk along the edge.11
Before the summit it suddenly darkens, thunder rumbles, rain threatens.12
On the summit I experience a ten-minute hailstorm, the same as two years ago on Begunjščica.13
The storm arrived so quickly and unexpectedly that I barely managed to put on rain gear and protect the backpack.14
Now just descend carefully.15
As quickly as the storm came, it passed; it cleared up, the sun shone. Bled revealed itself.16
The worst steep part is past. There across I spotted some hikers. It seems to me one goes to Stol from there - I don't know. Anyway, they were as wet as me.17
We go down.18
Beautifully Begunjščica reveals itself again.19
Then down the scree to the hut Pri izviru Završnice.20
Hut Pri izviru Završnice.21
Towards the hut on Zelenica - also here there was a snowstorm.22
Men.23
Spodnji Plot.24
There is also frozen evidence at the hut.25
One last look at Begunjščica and see you next time.26

Is the summit logbook up there already? Or is it still that full notebook that's been full for a year? Looks like I'll have to carry one up myself. Generally I notice in our mountains very messy summit logs and notebooks that are more worthy of the name trash.zmeden If I compare with peaks just across the border - on the Austrian side of Karawanks, no comparison.

We went to Vrtača via pathless eastern ridge. At the top there were quite a few hikers who came to the summit via the southern path, which we took back to the valley. Regards

Also on this path, since our last visit nothing has changed. Quite a few people took advantage of the nice day to visit the mountains.

Ljubelj, past the hut at Zelenica to Vrtača. Weather nice for hiking, few clouds, more sun and little wind at the top. Rascals have again knocked down the cairn marking the turnoff for Palec and Zelenjak. I don't know which PD is responsible for this part of Karawanks, maybe Žirovnica, to mark the turnoff. When I was on Palec and Zelenjak on 11.8. the cairn was still standing.
