Velika Montura - Velika Baba - Lanževica

On Friday from Savica past the Hut under Bogatin to Bogatinsko sedlo, then descent towards Krn Lake, and very soon a turnoff to the right from the marked path to the saddle under Velika Montura, ascent to it, then easy crossing from that saddle towards Velika Baba, followed by an interesting, scenic and well-cairned path to the top of Lanževica. Return along the marked path back to Komna.
The tour is interesting because you hike on marked and unmarked paths, at Bogatinsko sedlo you realize you've done a really nice, not too demanding loop over peaks near Krn Lake, without driving to Trenta.
On Velika Montura a real wealth of gentians, and no admirers, which isn't necessarily bad.

Yesterday on a beautiful tour and that twice to the summit. First was Velika Baba, second goal was Velika Montura.

Paths to Velika Baba are known. We can go from the Bohinj end from Savica waterfall, over Komna to Dom pri Krnskih jezerih and above the hut a marked path branches off right to Velika Baba. Or we can drive via Vršič to Lepena, which takes two hours. Then the path on the mule track to the branch for Velika Baba takes two hours. To the summit of the rocky peak Velika Baba we have another two hours walk. The somewhat long path is rewarded at the top of the two-thousander with views far around.

Our second summit is Velika Montura. Below Velika Baba a right unmarked path branches off to Velika Montura. After about fifteen minutes we come to a path junction. We continue on the right path on the old abandoned mule track, which brings us right to the top of Velika Montura. The mule track is traceable all the way and leads right to the ruins of military objects of the Rapallo border. The large military object is still well preserved. Of course there are no more roofs and windows and doors. They even had a water cistern, which is still visible today. A bit higher there was another smaller object, which is completely demolished. Then a pleasant walk follows to the top of the rocky grassy peak. Return the same way back. The ascent won't take us more than an hour.

In the middle is our target - Velika Baba, the peak on the right is Zelena škrbina - 1919 m.

Already below Velika Baba at the right junction to Velika Montura.

13. 9. 2019. Forgotten but little visited summit in the shadow of Krnski podložniki. Because yesterday we four hikers were the only ones on the summit. Three for the first time, me too, only Marjan, who has walked around here quite a bit, took us to the caverns around and over the saddle to see the buildings behind Lepoče, which are falling apart. The Italians built them during both world wars for the needs of guarding the Rapallo border. From Lepena we set off in the morning past Krnski on the path that leads to Velika Baba. Further for Velika Montura there is a traceable path that leads under the summit part, where there are old Italian guard posts still from the time of the Rapallo border. But they are slowly and steadily collapsing. We viewed three under the summit. The summit is really a great vantage point. Yesterday Triglav and Jalovec were almost cloudless. On Krn clouds crept in.

In Lepena in the morning really cold. The altimeter showed only 5 degrees.

The path from Velika Baba to Lanževica is trodden enough to follow it without much effort - cairns help too. But most of the path is on grass, so I advise against it when wet.

A few days ago I did the ascent to Velika Baba and Velika Montura, two big neighbors. First to Baba. On the descent I met a couple of hikers, so the tour wasn't so lonely. In the valley between Baba and Montura some little snow remained due to shade (up to 5 cm). The path to Montura is a nice mule track, really well traceable. So it wouldn't be so boring, a couple of ruins were placed along the whole path velik nasmeh

The summit is friendly grassy, with crazy views. One quickly understands why the Italians built the guard post right here.
"Summit from which you can see ships at sea, Krnsko jezero and Triglav", would be a good riddle for hill connoisseurs nasmeh

23.09.2021 was really a beautiful day to visit the mountains. Start from Lepena, first along the marked path to Velika Baba. The sky was cloudless in the morning, so the views were wonderful in all directions. Behind Vrh nad Peski mists were already visible. From Velika Baba descent back to the valley between V. Baba and Velika Montura and then ascent to Velika Montura. I had no problems following the path, the mule track is still clearly visible. When I reached the top of Velika Montura there were no views, the summit was already in fog. Really a pity. I also looked at the remains of the Italian post. I descended along the unmarked path leading to the Komna-Krn Lake path. I had no trouble finding the path, I knew approximately where it should be and it was exactly there. The path is clearly visible in the grass, and there are plenty of cairns too.
It was a nice day.

Yesterday on Velika Baba and Velika Montura.
Path between Lepena and Krn Lake is trampled, to the mentioned peaks no tracks and visits. Nice view around from the top and no wind. Lower snow layer nicely hard, on top some new softer, but quite ok for walking.

Snow starts after about half an hour of walking

Western side of Velika Baba. Up the slope steeply and to the right side. Ascent to the summit itself then from the opposite (eastern) side.

View back down. Among the spruces, the hut is partially visible too.

Great. We went on Thursday from Pod Zjabci. And turned back at height 1570 m. Because lots of fresh fallen snow. And drifted. Didn't even reach Oslova škrbina.
