As it seems, quite usual weather for Stol. Anyway, I've been up there only twice, but both times in conditions as you describe, while in the valley a hundred suns were shining.

Has anyone perhaps been on Stol in the last few days? How is the road to Valvasor?

On Sunday I was with friends on Stol. The road to Valvasor is dry. The Žirovnica path is also dry to Prižnica, from there to the summit snowy. We returned via the gully between both Stols. Snow in the upper half is hard, just right crust on top, in the lower part it breaks through. The Prešeren Hut was open to our great joy, unfortunately the joy was short-lived as we soon found out it was open only for selected company. To my question why the hut is not open on nice weekends, as visits would surely increase and almost every visitor would drink one tea, many also beer or two, I got an indignant reply from one chosen that I have no idea how harmful it is for the hut if open in winter, as condensation terribly destroys it. So dear hikers, if in society with hut open also in winter, act and prevent further destruction of your common good.

I can't help but comment on taubi4 regarding the chosen ones in the Prešeren Hut on Stol. They were people who came to install gutters so water collects for the opening in the summer season, and probably to do more that is needed for the start. If only he turned on a bit of logic regarding the hut opening on nice weekends, he would realize that water is not piped, electricity is not wired, and the central heating button is not turned in the boiler room like at home. And wireless-satellite internet (tax cash register) and HACCP law compliance at high altitude 2200m, snow storm and gale-force wind when nice in the valley and nice weekend. And safe step in the mountains for all together.

@gorskaroza . . . . "water is not piped, electricity is not wired, and the central heating button is not turned in the boiler room like at home. And wireless-satellite internet (tax register) HACCP law compliance, high altitude at 2200m, snow blizzard and gale-force wind when it's nice in the valley and a nice weekend" . . . . With all due respect, I can hint to you that neighboring countries have huts even above 3000m, even above 4000m, that weather conditions there are occasionally desperate too, yet they manage to keep them open in winter, not just on weekends, that they even have draft beer, that they can easily prepare several different menus, even for those with some medical diet, and that free internet in huts is increasingly the rule rather than the exception. Hot water for a small payment is often available too, for hygiene needs. Their legislation also imposes many "annoying" things on them, but they accept that because there's no other way. Written NOT intended for Prešeren Hut staff, but for PZS bosses, who should . . . That's already another story, what all they should do. Good luck!

Dear turbo, it is true what you say, but abroad huts were built from commercial motives, here more than 100 years ago due to national consciousness, with shock work, out of love for the mountains and belonging to one's nation. Sadly, not much has changed for the better since then, or in step with the times. When the owner is known, or management in private hands, then the huts will probably be open even on "judgment day", for one single reason, so that they can pay all taxes and obligations to the state. Then we are where there are no flies. No longer in the mountains, where we go precisely because everything is simpler, more natural and people are "better". That's all from my side and have a nice day further.

#turbo I sign under your opinion. Last week at Studlhütte 2800 high ... WCs better arranged than here in most pubs.. offer top, prices similar to ours .. not about wages. #gorskakoza purpose of hut building was the same here and abroad .. just here "somewhere lost" a couple of decades ago .. I would seriously calculate and offer a bit more .. after all you're in the hills - what moaning - stupid excuse

Obviously only gorskakoza knows the real situation at home and abroad, otherwise they wouldn't post such one-sided comments. Oh how nice across the border in mountain taverns. Strange that some still go home to sleep at all

Good that it's not like in the "golden abroad". For me it would be fine even if there were no hut at all.

Why is it necessary to bring all the "comfort" we're used to from the valley to the mountains too? Surely we don't go to the mountains for internet and beer..., but for the beauties that nature offers us. But we've already intervened too much in nature anyway! And it's not enough, we need to bring LCD-TVs up there and the most modern and advanced technology-.-"

..."among us but before 100 and more years due to national consciousness, with shock work, out of love for the mountains "... If we were building huts out of love for the mountains, we wouldn't build them at all! As some of you already point out, visits to the hills also increase greatly in winter, where huts are open... Where huts are already built, they shouldn't "rant" about minimal, "eco" service, because we know well how it can be completely different if they want.

Another frosty morning. On Stol it's real winter. Six-tooth crampons came in handy.

Today the top of Stol so foggy that unfortunately there were no views at all. Snow was completely corn snow in the afternoon so crampons stayed in the backpack. Still, the afternoon hike felt great

On Sunday, 22.8.: Circular path Valvasorjev dom, Stol, Potoški Stol, Vajnež, Urbas, Valvasorjev dom, is in good condition. Some easy corn snow fields between the two Stols (chance for sliding on the last one ), on the traverse to Vajnež and to the bivouac on Belščica. I recommend the path also in reverse. Above the Urbas spring the path is somewhat torn up due to logging and timber skidding. Good luck!

Today from Valvasor to Stol...Weather wonderful, only on top constant wind...On the way back gotta use the snow tongue between hut and summit, where 300 height meters drop like nothing.
