Hello! On Saturday I'd head to Stenar from Aljažev dom in Vrata, of course if the weather allows. I'd do a loop tour, so which path is better for ascent, Stenarska vratca or over Sovatna. Since I haven't hiked here yet, I wonder if markings and signs are visible enough not to go the wrong path. Thanks for the answers. Lp, Aleš

You see markings in the forest, higher up snow

You can pretty much forget about it, at least for a few more weeks. There's still huge snow. Check links to pics from a few days ago - one page back. Lp.

dunjo - I suggest ascent over Stenarska vratica and descent over Sovatna. If you follow touring skiers, you can't miss. With full winter gear it'll go (just pity if you don't have skis...).

Yeah, I relied on skiers' tracks, but probably crisscross up there, so wouldn't know where to turn. And without ice axe probably not yet. Better wait a bit with Stenar, go to Stol. Thanks for info. Lp

Well, Dunjo, just like you said. We'll go to Stol then in a month to Stenar.

Without ice axe and crampons.. NO go yeah.. up there still around 4m snow, at least, maybe better go dry first, to know where you're walking when there's still snow..

Up to where does the snow line extend from Vrata to Stenar? How much elevation gain on dry ground without touring skis on your feet?

dunjo - you can go to Križ instead. There probably the crampons and ice axe won't be needed. You'll have to descend the same path, you won't have any orientation problems because you'll probably be in a line

@klemiko: dry until you're in the forest, then snow starts, or at least it was like that on Sunday, 4.5.; @sla: don't mislead with winter gear, even to the junction for Križ there's a shady part and the snow was really hard on Sunday, we walked on top with crampons, but that's how it was on Sunday, everyone knows what they do.. good luck..

What did you think, that you'd have concrete in this heat?

Today on skis to Stenar via stenarska vratca. Hot, hot, hot... Don't remember when a ski tour was so hot. Lots of snow, ski continuously through stenarska vratca to the slab, but in the steepest part of vratca already so softened that first 20m better walked on descent. Upper part and traverse to Triglav lots of softened snow, sinking shoe-deep. Still proper winter in Julijci, unbelievable for this time of year. Whole day met only one brave soul for this hot day, who turned to Križ. Below some pics, unfortunately not best quality in bright light (from phone).

On Saturday did tour to Kriške podi via stenarska vratca. Still lots of snow, nicely frozen, crampons and ice axe mandatory. Weather cloudy, no views. And windy on top. Beer in hut nicely cold, jota excellent. Met one Slovenian family (thanks again for company Dr. Ejči and team), next day did joint tour to Pihavec, and home. Some pics from Stenar ....

Hi. I'm interested in the conditions to Stenar (snow, snowfields) from Kriške podi? Thanks for the reply.

Also from Kriške podi there are snowfields, no chance without ice axe and crampons. . From Trenta to Kriške podi also snowfields to cross; from the chapel onwards.

From Dovška vrata to the top of Stenar we step on (soft) snow a few more times, but we can also completely avoid it. So the path can be traversed without winter gear. The neighboring Križ is completely dry.

Super. Thanks for the info. Which route did you take - over Sovratna, both ways?
