St. Martin above Benečija with surroundings

Snow doesn't smell good to us anymore and if spring is anywhere, it's in Benečija. We've driven there quite a few times and so we made full use of the day. We planned the ridge from St. Martin on one side of Rečanska valley, across the border Kolovrat all the way to Hum on the other side. A nice circular variant emerged with plenty of views, good paths, pleasant villages and locals who happily chat in Slovenian. Super thing for these spring days nasmeh. More in photo comments.

The whole loop came to 32 km and 1900 elevation gain, can also be shortened. GPS track of our variant available from me.

Starting point Hlodič (Clodig), parking coordinates: 46.156167 13.594556

We parked in Hlodiču at the arranged parking lot in front of the museum1
We turned onto the first road after the bridge and higher up crossed on the forest road towards the village Kanalac2
The village is small, more a hamlet and that with only a few permanent residents3
Majestic chestnut, 400 years old with trunk circumference 9 m. Chestnut is autochthonous tree in these parts4
The chestnut owner addressed us in fluent Slovenian and gladly showed us the nearby sights5
New shelter Sveti Martin, owned by CAI and open by arrangement6
Inscription in dialect :)7
Our direction. To here there is considerable ascent, then long ridge walking follows8
Church just below the first summit. Mass is still held here twice a year9
Our first summit, Sv. Martin10
The summit is a viewpoint. On the opposite side of Rečanska dolina we will return11
Next summit12
Interestingly marked and overgrown Vrh Škarij13
Never seen signposts right before the border with Slovenia14
We are already at the border. From here to Livških Raven there are no more markers, but the direction is logical15
First defensive line in Slovenia :)16
Livške Ravne17
A section of the path runs on asphalt past the school18
After the first bend a direct path to the highest summit of today Kuk branches off quite inconspicuously19
The path is steep and thorny, the worst on the entire route.20
It is marked with red dots, which it is advisable to follow.21
Razgledni Kuk, with transmitter on the summit.22
This ridge we have just traversed.23
From Kuk one can see far and wide.24
... and we continue towards Kolovrat25
View back at Kuk26
All paths in the border area are excellently marked and unmistakable27
Krn in the distance28
In this direction we go all the way to the top of Na Gradu, where we descend deep into the Italian side again29
Kolovrat and Italian marker just above the bivouac30
The peaks follow one after another31
Trinški vrh. The entire border ridge is connected by the *Walk of Peace*, dedicated to the front line from the First World War32
Open-air museum with restored trenches, tunnels and caverns33
View of Tolmin34
The first part runs along the connecting path of chaplain Martin Čedermac and the Walk of Peace, the second along the yellow branch of Via Alpina35
Another interesting village Brieg with houses clinging to the slope. Typical for these parts36
Along the path …37
Everywhere there are plenty of such and various markers as reminders of events from the First World War38
The people around here are quite religious too. This marker has shards of green glass as a base39
Sveti Štuoblank. Another peculiarity of these places … separate bell tower40
Company. In the background the Kolovrat ridge that we have just crossed41
In the final ridge there are lower and upper paths available. We chose the left one over Hum42
You really can't miss these markers :)43
Neglected chapel on one of the peaks. I immediately closed the door so nothing would jump at me :)44
Our last peak of the day … Hum45
You don't see architecture like this every day. It all looks quite new, probably a hunting lodge.46
Soon after descending from Hum we took the descent towards Hlodič.47
There is 4 km of asphalt, but one can walk along the edge without difficulty.48
Conclusion49
Surprise in the inn with an invitation to *Ljubljansko pico*, whatever that is :)50
