Sports watch

Hello.

For the last 5 years I've been using Garmin Forerunner 405. The watch still serves me well, but it has quite a few shortcomings and I'd like to replace it. I've looked at Suunto Ambit 3 Peak and Garmin Fenix 3. Since these watches are expensive, I'm interested in your opinion. Especially which one has the more accurate GPS and altimeter. Suunto has a storm predictor and weather data, I'm curious how it performs. It also has long battery life; if you set it to 5-sec GPS it should last up to 30 hours, which is handy for multi-day hikes and also running so you don't charge every day. And how it works when swimming—heart rate and other things—and how it performs in salt water. I'm also interested if any more advanced sports watch is announced or coming. And if you would replace the watch in my place.

Thanks for the answers and best regards.

For advice, turn to user "starakost" on the running forum ....he knows a lot about these things and will definitely help you....best regards

I'm also interested in comparison with Fenix 2...

Hm... Maybe it's necessary to emphasize the difference between running watches and hiking / adventure watches. Forerunner is a running watch, not the best for mountains. From firsthand experience, GPS doesn't work in walls as it's impossible to get multiple satellites in view. Here other sensors come in, like barometer. For running maybe basic Forerunner (model 15) best, lightest and simplest. For mountains watch must be robust and with additional sensors. Regards

Likewise, Fenix is not suitable for running and swimming... Too big and heavy.

I suggest you buy Suunto Ambit2. Probably still available in some shop. Super watch. Choose variant with barometric and GPS height measurement

I asked around and read some descriptions and tests. For my needs i.e. hiking, occasional running and swimming and other stuff best choice is Suunto Ambit 3 or if really cheap Ambit 2. Fenix 2,3 out because lots of GPS accuracy issues and reliability not their strength, price too high for what they offer, other pluses don't outweigh. Most likely I'll buy Ambit 3 because long battery life, reliable, good GPS reception, barometric and GPS altimeter, storm predictor, can swim with HR monitor and more advantages. Waiting for prices in Germany to drop to 300 eur (now 330) and then buy it.

Hello,

Main difference between Ambit 2 and 3 is that 3 has Bluetooth connection and you can use smartphone as monitor and special HR measurement mode for swimming. This is useful if you actively swim.
Regarding storm prediction, Ambit2 also has it, shows rapid air pressure drop, but not sure storm will come. Battery life no big difference. For my activities (ski touring, mountain biking and hiking) fully sufficient. True, Ambit 2 has two versions. Better one has dual height measurement.
So I'd decide for Ambit2 again, probably get very cheap online.

For 300 euros you get decent mobile phone that has almost all listed and much more. Few years ago had Garmin 405cx, but phones weren't like today. Need to realize no device 100%, especially not in mountains. For these times these watches still much too expensive for what they offer, competition here long ago, but they still offer watches for 300 euros and more.
For phone use app and get chest strap.

Yeah, and with your phone after two hours of training you're out of battery and left without a watch and without a phone.
A mobile phone app can't equally replace a quality sports watch. My opinion.

What do you think about Polar A300 HR?

It's true you can track everything with a phone, but battery is really a problem, and it's not practical either, because I like to monitor during training, check current heart rate, distance... and it's more practical than on a phone, plus better watches have more data for analysis and sensors for monitoring. But I agree that for basic use a phone is fine.

Don't know the Polar A300 watch...

I think both phones and watches have their advantages.

I'm interested in Polar M400 and V800. With M400 the battery doesn't last long enough for my needs, V800 is already quite close. The downside of watches in my opinion is that you can't charge them while walking, whereas phones you can. Also on the phone you have navigation and many other things that you can't have on the watch.

If you use the phone, the battery drains quickly only if you constantly look at the display.

My phone battery usually lasts 6 to 7 hours, with navigation on nonstop (screen mostly off), plus Bluetooth connected Polar H7 heart rate sensor and nonstop listening to audiobooks or podcasts, sometimes taking a picture.

I have the navigation app set to announce every 5 minutes on hills data on total distance and lap distance, time used, lap time, lap speed, current and average speed, altitude, current and average heart rate, etc., so I don't need to check the screen.

This heart rate data is useful because sometimes I speed up too much, sometimes I slack off and don't even realize it.

Hello!

I have issues with Polar AXN500 watch, specifically with the barometer, more precisely with the baro/alti sensor that needs to be replaced.

But since Polar apparently stopped sending spare parts for my model a year ago, the service in LJ (Urca) couldn't help at all.

This surprises me. Isn't it legally required that the manufacturer provides parts for seven years after the product is off the market?

In some similar forum discussions, I saw they highly praised some Mr. Marin from Novo mesto. Though a few years ago. Who knows if it's still relevant, maybe he could help me.

Thank you very much and best regards

A bit late, but anyway... I have Fenix 3, before that 910xt. Someone who says the watch isn't suitable for running or swimming due to weight probably hasn't tried it for those activities. Same could be said for Ambit3, which is even a couple grams heavier. But Fenix 3 with steel strap is really unsuitable, it's heavy.

F3 works underwater too (and salt water - I went with old 910xt multiple times in salt water, no issues - just rinse after), heart rate doesn't work while swimming neither on F3 nor on Ambit3. Only on Polar...

Pricewise good was Fenix 2 special edition on wiggle all summer (259 EUR with HRM), but unfortunately no longer available

Just to correct you, heart rate is measured on Ambit 3 underwater too, and you sync it with the watch at the end of swimming. Anyway, you can't see it while swimming.

Garmin also released a new heart strap with which it will be possible to measure heart rate while swimming on the same principle as Suunto watches.

Ha ha, I think you've gone a bit off track... Garmin Fenix is not primarily intended for running and such. For running Garmin has Forerunner series. Sure you can run with Fenix, you can run with 20kg backpack too, but that's not it. Actually Fenix is some mix or Garmin's flagship: most expensive wrist device, which isn't good for running, even less for swimming, least for hiking.
