Nothing unusual. In earlier summer months there are plenty.

First picture is the common black viper or common gož, since hard to tell apart in nature? Viper is venomous, gož is not. Attach some of your own snake pics from our hills, where you met snake and which? Second picture shows smooth snake, look well at the head. Third is viper. etc

Quote: "First picture is the common black viper or common gož, since hard to tell in nature?" First picture is viper...distinguish by thickened body, tail narrows quickly and is quite short. Recognizable also by characteristic lance-shaped head form...can compare heads with third picture.

Or you can look a snake really close in the eye, if it has a vertical narrow pupil then it's venomous. If round then not. I think.

Last year I saw quite a few snakes in the hills and valleys. I saw a viper also on such popular paths as Urh near Ljubljana or the path between Vodnik hut and Konjsko sedlo. They still spiced up the hike - I hope it stays that way. (of course I don't want to be surprised by some venomous one nnn )

You can practically run into a snake everywhere. I saw the last one this year when going over Grmada to Šmarna gora. Nice young smooth snake. Timid and fleeing.

Last year around bivouac below Mrzli vrh quite a few smooth snakes. One got into open backpack during one-hour rest. Surprise at parking below Rinka was indescribable and luckily ended well without bite.

I don't really want to meet them, but if I do, I prefer to leave them alone and usually we each take our own path (I have nothing against it staying that way). I've got a few in the "collection", though I prefer collecting flowers:

Last year at Konjsko sedlo 1782m, on the way to Bohinjski Migovec, I met a snake by the path. I nicely told it I'm passing by; it understood me and slowly moved a bit higher above the path right away. If you're calm and positive, the snake senses it and behaves like all other non-dangerous animals.

Regarding encounters with snakes, people make too much panic around them. If you meet one, please don't kill them like some hikers do, as they have the right to live too and are useful for the environment. No fatal case from snake bite in Slovenia yet, so boldly go on the mountain trails. lp

From experience I tell you, a snake won't do anything to you unless you step on it, and snakes aren't hard to spot at all, adult ones are 60-80 cm long.

Me too, today I met two snakes on the way to Nanos!!! Yeah, not cool, right? Because if nothing else, you have to wait for it to move or, if possible, step somewhere else to pass by it

Apparently yesterday afternoon on the way to Ratitovec a snake bit some female hiker who was then taken to hospital by helicopter.
