Planina Kuhinja - Krn - Batognica

After a long drive I happily stepped from the parking lot above Krn village past the crowing blackbird uphill. After an hour and fifty minutes our trio surprisedly stopped in front of closed doors - obviously the owners earned enough in the long summer and are on well-deserved vacation!?!? Visitors in front of the hut though - good there are enough benches, we didn't miss anything of course.
Our trio aimed today to visit peaks east of Krn. Unfortunately views were slightly obstructed by mists that lingered up there more or less all day. No snow anywhere anymore, but visitors in droves and from all directions. Traces of WWI at every step and especially Italians observed the remains with interest. We descended via Planina Leskovca and skewered a nice sausage.
Heavily besieged Gomiščkovo shelter with firmly slammed doors.1
View from Krn. Unfortunately, the mists persisted all day.2

Very nice tour in decent weather, Gominško shelter no longer supplied, only "winter room" anymore.

Tomaž, your photos are always exceptional, even without snow! I always look at them with pleasure. Already looking forward to them!

Lijaneja, the detail in the photo that's a hole was probably an artillery position or for a machine gun during the Soča front.

Finally! From Planina Kuhinja along the direct path past Gomišček's shelter (with extremely friendly caretakers!) to the top of Krn. Over the saddle to Batognica - very nice of the path maintainers to have secured the most annoying spots with cables, folks like me are grateful to youjezik. Sheep droppings on the path do get on one's nerves a bit, but on Batognica it was really fun watching flocks of sheep with shepherds, the sheep wandering under their feet. Batognica is otherwise a beautiful mountain with magnificent views and full of interesting WWI remains. After descending to Prag we headed to the lake in Lužnica, cooled our overheated feet and descended back to Planina Kuhinja, where in a pleasant chat with the caretakers we ate well to manage the long way home. Really a pity these areas are quite remote, they're gorgeous!

Hi, I have a question.

Tomorrow we're heading to Krn and might go to Batognica too.

Interested if the path from Krn to Batognica is marked, how long it is (walking hours) approx and how difficult (compared to Krn). Starting from Planina Kuhinja.

On Hribi.net there's a path described via Planina Sleme, 4.30 h, while elsewhere on the net it's mentioned as only 30-45 min. We'd want the shortest variant, since we might start a bit late.

Could you give some advice?

Many thanks!

Why not go in the opposite direction? Pl.Leskovca-Lužnica-Batognica-Škrbina-Krn.

Start early and it'll be fine (latest 7:30 from Kuhinja). Otherwise you'll soon see what it means to hike the south plateau of Krn in sun and heatcool.

As miri wrote, this variant is nice, a bit longer. I think about 5 hours depending on how fast you hike. It's fully marked, nothing difficult, just let it be a nice day. In fog it's not very pleasant to hike, nowhere is it. And make it a loop.

Mhm, we were thinking of starting around or after 12. Too bad. But do you think it's really impossible because of the sun? That's why we don't want some long variant.
Last year in summer I was there, summit in total "fog", below hot but bearable.

Or is there a shadier variant?

At 12 usually one goes to lunch.

Lijaneja, exactly so; otherwise Italians already after lunch start greeting with buona serra, which means good eveningzavijanje z očmi. Krn has a cap in the afternoon more often, as we say (cloud around the summit).

Mjah, we're not Italians nasmeh they greet Buona sera, not serra, because that's a greenhouse nasmeh

Then I'll follow your advice and we'll sleep one night at Nadiža's and head to Krn on Friday morning. That way we'll have enough time. I hope we also have the strength nasmeh

At 12 it'll be hot as hell if the day is sunny. Don't!

Otherwise from Krn to Batognica it's really cca. 45 minutes. The path from the notch to Batognica summit is slightly harder than to Krn, but completely nothing special, especially since now on those few maybe a bit tricky spots there are cables and it's really completely unproblematic.

Thanks. If we skip the lake, and go only from Krn to Batognica, does it then (time-wise) pay to go back the same path?
