Mangart - Jalovec

Print
nata2416. 08. 2011 08:09:23
Since stable weather was finally forecast for Sunday, Matjaž and I decided on a more killer tour. We started in Planica (those who parked in Tamar got a notice from the wardens) past Tamar to Kotovo sedlo and to Jalovec. We descended back to the saddle and continued down towards Loška Koritnica to the turnoff for Mangart where we started ascending again first to Koritniški Mangart and then to Mangart where there was quite a crowd. For dessert back down the same way again and over Kotovo sedlo and across the scree to Tamar and Planica. We had spare legs with us but didn't need them velik nasmeh

First time when you reach the bushes before the bivouac, second time just before entering the climbing section, when you two were already descending towards Kotovo sedlo...nasmeh

Hi, interested in the Jalovec - Mangart path.
Anyone know it?

Thanks Helly

How much walking time between Kotovo sedlo and Mangart (via Slovenian route)?

Err, so in the opposite direction? From Mangart it takes quite a while, especially near the Italian bivouac when you realize you'll have to drop almost to the bottom of Koritnica and then back up.

Hehe, the info 'it takes a while' doesn't tell me much.
I plan both directions.

Do you mean Rob nad Žgačami? On the map it doesn't look like a huge descent.

Duration depends on you/your group and where you really start. Last time there, we needed a full day to cross from the saddle to the bivouac under KS, for official time see pespoti.si, where you can build the whole route and the descent under "Žgačami" will be quantified too.

Both topo maps on Geopedii show another crossing higher up, right under KŠ, but I don't know it, nor did it look marked.

I'm interested in a two-day hike where you'd summit Mangart and Jalovec.
Which direction or tour do you recommend?
Regards, Dejan

If you need to return to the same starting point, then:
A) 1. Tamar - Kotovo sedlo - Huda škrbina - Mangart - return - sleep in Tarvisio bivouac (Busettini), or if you can't find the path to it, in bivouac at Kotovo sedlo
2. bivouac - Kotovo sedlo - Jalovec - Goličica - Jalovška škrbina - Tamar
B) 1. Trenta (Flori) - Jalovška škrbina - Kotovo sedlo - Huda škrbina - Mangart - return - sleep in Tarvisio bivouac (Busettini), or in bivouac at Kotovo sedlo
2. bivouac - Kotovo sedlo - Jalovec - Zavetišče pod Špičkom - Trenta
C) 1. Koritnica - Čez Brežice - Škrbina za Gradom - Zavetišče pod Špičkom - Jalovec - bivouac at Kotovo sedlo
2. bivouac - Kotovo sedlo - Huda škrbina - Mangart - return to Koritnica, or descent to Mangrtsko sedlo and then hitchhike to Log (alt. descent via unmarked path from Rdeča skala to Koritnica).

Great, thanks for the answer.
Return would be to the same starting point.

Which of these three is your personal favorite for experiencing a really nice trip?
I know it will be strenuous nasmeh

Given you're planning for two days, maybe try Tamar as start and return to it via Belopaška jezera or vice versa. Both valleys are linked by the path over Ponce.

I tackled the route like this: slept in the hut at Mangart Saddle, next day Mangart - Kotovo Saddle - Jalovec - shelter under Špičkom, next day over Kanja Saddle to Bavski Grintavec and to Bavšica. I quickly got a hitchhike to Mangart Saddle.nasmeh

coupet: still, depends where you live and where you'll arrive first, Tamar, Koritnica, or Trento.
Third variant is the only one not requiring return from Mangart, but haven't tried the unmarked path down to Koritnica.
