Posts on this page so exciting that the trail shot up high on my wishlist. It's really nice, I was up there on the second holiday day, which was also the last nice one before this wet grayness we're experiencing today and yesterday ...

This afternoon I took the chance to visit Kucelj. In the morning it was wrapped in haze. Just before one o'clock I started hiking under the tunnels above the quarry along the srednječavenska trail. Past the hut on Čavnu and on to Kucelj. At the top really nice. Almost no wind and great views. I descended via Mala Gora on, at least to me, a new trail along the ridge. It later joins the trail I took up. But dusk caught me and it got dark quickly. I walked through the forest in the dark to the starting point. Didn't meet almost anyone. The trail wasn't even muddy. Probably because there's lots of leaves... Otherwise a nice November hike, just should have started earlier.

No higher today. So we went under the tunnels along srednječavenska to the bench. Where there's the view. When Čaven isn't wrapped in fog, like it was all day today. There we turned and went to the hut on Čavnu. Snow is melting well. Thermometer showed 5 degrees. Windy. But no matter. We headed to Kucelj. Snow on the way. But as usual bare at the top. And no one around. Views all around. Everywhere the same. That's how it should be for the second half of December. We skipped Veliki Rob. Continued past the hut on Mali Gori. There were tracks seen. Similar to bear tracks in the snow. But if it really was there, it had already wandered off who knows where. They said it's of a gentler kind. That they saw it. We didn't. Back along srednječavenska to the start. At 14:30 it was already quite dark in the forest, like night was approaching. No rain except at the end when it drizzled a bit. About 13 km we walked. A bit different but still nice hike.

This year's Kucelj. Again an afternoon hike. Started under the tunnels. Along srednječavenska. To the scenic bench. Continued past the hut on Čavnu to Kucelj. At the top nothing warm. I needed gloves because my hands got cold. Descended to Mala Gora and along the lower path to the start. By the way, had sunset. And arrived at the start in the dark. Anyway, the dog friend was more tired than me. smile

Yesterday's hike was really interesting. We did a loop from Vitovlje. To the church, where I've never been before. Then along Napoleon's trail. But instead of Veliki Rob we went along the lower srednječavenska to Kucelj. Never hiked this trail before. Towards Kucelj summit it's quite steep. Sun came out. A few more hikers arrived. Continued to Veliki Rob. There past the cadastral marker from old Austria times. From Veliki Rob past Čaven summit to the start. Not a short hike. About fifteen km. Very little snow. It melts quickly. Nice view towards the sea. Only Julijci were in clouds. Real winter is there.

Yesterday hiked Čaven from the Anton Bavčer mountain hut on Čavnu to Mala Gora, continued to Kucelj and Veliki Rob.
Trails are marked and normally passable. Lots of flowers along the paths, views thrill from Julijci to Učka and far to the Adriatic. Below us the whole Vipava Valley. In short, it's nice.

19.6.2022. Still I thought we'd meet more hikers with Maks. But it was too hot. Classic familiar trail for both under the tunnels in shade where we started. And continued steeply to the scenic bench. Past the stone eagle. Then to the hut on Čavnu, which is open. After cooling a bit more to Kucelj, where a breeze at least cooled a little. No one at the top. Sea not visible. Descended to Mala Gora and then upper trail, where now lots of flowers. And again past the sheds and stone eagle to the start.

I started (and finished) under the tunnels above the quarry along the Srednječavenski path, then past the hut on Čaven and onwards to Kucelj.
The path is very nicely laid out, marked and varied.
But the intermediate part of the path is surprisingly steep. It surprised me, I have to admit jezik

Otherwise the summit offers wonderful views, a bit below it rose gardens. Wonderful!

Very few hikers. We only started walking at eleven under the tunnels. Up that steep slope to the bench and past the stone eagle. Continued to Mala Gora. And on to Kuclj. Beautiful weather today. Towards the sea you could see. Even ships were visible. Only the Julians were hidden. We descended past the hut on Čaven and along the path to the starting point.

Just for info, if anyone is going to the Anton Bavčar hut on Čaven they have plowed the road to the hut and it's passable with winter gear.

The sun lured us into the Vipava Valley, which is slowly waking from winter sleep at this time of year. Us too nasmeh. We marked Kucelj as the goal, Stomaž as the starting point. So that it wouldn't be too short altogether, we took time to relive memories and discover new things. Along the road under the ridge and Srednji Čavenski we went far to the west, returned along the karst edge over Sončni škol, Kucelj and past the hut on Čaven. More follows in picture and word ...
We park in the lower part of Stomaž. The info board at the parking lot shows the main attractions in the area.1
View back at the morning Stomaž. Mornings are still cold, so we quickly pull on gloves and buff.2
The morning is slowly waking up ...3
Kucelj is already basking in the sun. We'll get to it around ass o'clock in the gully :)4
Soon we leave the marked path and go our own way. Not everyone sees these observation posts :)5
Finally on the warm side of the slope. Like two little swallows, we diligently expose ourselves to the sun :)6
It's nice here. The path is probably mostly trodden by locals7
In the grass it's a bit harder to follow it, so we find the right direction with GPS8
We found it again...9
Later our variant joins the marked path, but I don't know where its beginning is10
Just so you know who can shoot at you :)11
He, he … mark number 15. That's how many we really saw altogether :)12
The lower transverse road leads us far towards the west…13
At this signpost we turn right in the direction of Kuclj, but only to the Čavenska transverse path14
The ascent is steep, the ground pleasant for walking15
We are already on the Čavenska path. Here we take it far to the left to the branch for Sončni školj16
In between we stumble upon a forest track, which is in much better condition than last year17
We continue. Below is the notorious irrigation reservoir Vogršček18
The mostly flat Čavenska path passes into rocky terrain19
We branch off to the right into the hill. We will rise a few storeys20
For my taste, this is the nicest passage onto the karst edge21
Soon we are on the first summit Veliki rob, more nicely named Sončni škol22
Also my little sun :)23
We continue in the direction of Kucelj. It looks close, but one has to make an effort to reach it24
On the northern sides one can still find some patches of shade25
View back …26
Kucelj. The sun is diligently warming, the breeze is just right, visitors are rather few …27
At Koča na Čavnu it's not much better either. This time it was open, the tenant is obviously new28
The descent also looks far around. We are walking here for the first time and this inscription is new to us29
The path in the upper part is quite panoramic. The view is in the direction of Nanos30
We reach the cross Čavenska path again. We continue the descent in the direction of Lokavec31
The path is nicely maintained and despite the steepness pleasant to walk32
At the gnome marker :)33
No, this is not Snow White and the seven dwarfs, but a nativity scene waiting for the new winter34
On the clearing Slano blato we finally turn definitively towards the starting point35
Only a short easy gravel section remains for us.36
Village monument in Stomaž.37
The church of St. Thomas is also part of this place's vista.38
The arranged parking is at the cemetery; the upper one has changed purpose.39
GPS track of the hiked route. Recorded 18 km and 1400 m elevation gain.40

With a colleague we did a reconnaissance for Čaven and Kucelj. Start was in Predmeja. Along a not too steep and demanding path you are in a good hour plus a bit at the hut on Čaven. Then we climbed to Kucelj as the main goal. You can't believe that Čaven and Kucelj are almost at the same altitude. Back to Mala Gora to the hut and on unmarked path to the marked path. That beautiful marked path leads to asphalt before the tunnels. From there no other way than on asphalt back to the start in Predmeja. Weather was dry, a bit windy, you could see the whole sea.

It will hold yes, but the very steep part is short. For Čaven on the trail from Lokavec there's also a short steep section; in both cases it's when crossing the Srednječavenska path, that's the one leading to the tunnels. But walking on asphalt from tunnels to Predmeja is about 1km or 10 min, nothing scary because the road runs through quite interesting landscape.

With a colleague we wanted to visit Mala Gora too. From the hike from Kuclj we didn't return to Čaven but went to Mala Gora. From Mala Gora then on the left unmarked path-somehow along the edge past that nice bench and then steeply turns down to this beautiful path that brings us to asphalt before the tunnels. On this path Škofja Loka hikers walked a couple of years ago. The bus dropped us right at the entrance to this path. On this steep from Mala Gora I went for the first time. The purpose was to check primroses on Kuclj-sadly they will bloom only in two-three weeks.

Let's be precise. Namely, Čaven is the entire mountain range from Predmeja to Sekulak and also the peak located west of Veliki rob. Most don't consider this, so descriptions have ambiguities.
