Today three Styrians made the ascent to Kredarica from Krma. Road drivable without problems to the end - to the parking lot. Now a good track is made through the whole path. We had some problems on the ascent on the scree below Rž (sinking up to the last butt cheek), otherwise it went without problems, didn't need crampons either. Up to approx. 2200 m cloudy, foggy with light snowfall - higher sunny and real idyll - real winter fairy tale. As proof I'm attaching some photos. PS - must praise the "weather tandem" at Kredarica (Janez and Zvone), they were very friendly, and also brewed us good tea. Highly recommend to all those who are additionally motivated by trudging through snow, wind and low temperatures, to drop by up there.

Hi rogi, what do you think, would it go with skis?

Look one page back. Conditions for skiing are the same as Triglavski already described.

Yes, one can ski through the valley, but from Mali polje down it's a shame for skis - little snow!

It's possible to reach the end of Krma by car. New snow from shepherds over 30 cm, higher more, lots windblown, slabbed from walls. Big danger of snow slides (one triggered at top of Žleb by snow cornice, luckily without special consequences except lost pole).

So you didn't reach Kredarica as I understood. Now mainly dangerous are slab avalanches, because wind piled snow into windslabs and they can trigger at the slightest load. I'd be interested how much snow fell in Krma, I think not more than 10 cm.

We got to the top of Žleb, specifically on the right side, closer to Rž (I think a path joins there). The avalanche triggered under load when we were crossing left to the top of the snow cornice (altimeter 2320m). Then we turned back and luckily 3 Croats with us and later 5 Czechs. The snowpack is dangerous in general, since in places without windblown more than 15 cm of completely dry snow fell. In my opinion it won't be safe on this path for a while. To Krma by car is possible, snow more than 10 cm, but we drove through it first in the morning, then in the evening when snowfall stopped. Soon it will be skiable to the parking, for now the snow is still too dry and you hit rocks...

Is it safe already for ascent to Kredarica?

Although snow still sticks to walls for now, due to abundance of new snow up to ca. 1m above 2000-2200m, exposing to possible avalanches is a risky venture. Moreover, the week before New Year promises additional cm of new snow, so avalanche conditions will critically increase. Very wise also to ask weathermen at Kredarica who have lots of data and experience with snow, winds in high mountains. Lp

Maybe someone knows the road conditions to Krma and then the path to Kredarica? How far by car? Is the path to Kredarica trodden? Thanks for info and nice weekend!

My brother went up today - without skis or snowshoes. and turned back below the last ascent, because through brush above the shepherds and onwards he was breaking trail all the way. but there's a ski track made, he says, so snowshoes would be fine too. Car left about 500m before the hut in Krma, meaning almost an extra hour walk. Fog to the shepherds and a bit beyond, then winter fairytale.. Be tough guys and tread to the end so I can go up next week too.

Well then you'll tread to the goal... today I was breaking trail to the top somewhere else in the Julian Alps...

Nataša thanks for the really good info. We're not that tough so we'll join you next week instead, and tread together, unless someone tough does it before!

No need to break trail, because today there were about 30 mountain enthusiasts at Kredarica (70% bloody skiers or ski tourers). So the path is well packed, just occasionally it sank under us (to the butt). Sun showed up at the Pastirski stan . Parking lot full of cars , we parked at the museum. If I had had a shovel, I could have dug out the parking spot a bit before Kovinarska hut.

20.1. was at Kredarica, road plowed, parking arranged for ca. 15 cars, otherwise space for some cars also at Kovinarska hut, path trodden, no problems at all. Path took me under 5 hours round trip, plus stop at the hut. Regards

And were you on foot or skis? For Saturday I'm interested in on foot to Kredarica, does it sink a lot or are snowshoes needed? Wondering roughly how long on foot to Kredarica in these conditions?

I went on foot, if you follow the trodden path it doesn't sink, just a bit slippery, so microspikes welcome. I went fairly fast and from parking to Kredarica in 3h15min. Talked to some ski tourers who didn't praise skiing conditions much (crusty). That was yesterday, if more precip then conditions can change completely. To park further at the upper lot beyond Kovinarska hut you gotta be early, I barely parked at 9am. Nice weekend forecast so even harder. Good luck!
