Crampons and poles don't go together. At least not on steeper terrain of the ascent from Pastirci onwards.

zmeden Don't know what you'd suggest then??? Crampons from Pastirci then ice axe onwards or what??? And why crampons and hiking poles don't go together, happy for answer too.zmedenzmedenzmedenzmedenmrk pogledzavijanje z očmi

Basic mountaineering gear rule: crampons on feet, ice axe in hands! Because in case of slip, poles helpless (useless for stopping). In fall with crampons, lift legs (else somersault headfirst!) and try to stop with ice axe. Hikers, recommend annual alpinist-mountaineer course or at least weekend GRS(Vršič) training. 2009 wish all safe prudent steps and joyful coexistence with mountain nature.

Right. A slip, for example, somewhere in the middle of the last ascent to the saddle, can end very badly if the snow is frozen. With poles, you definitely won't stop. And of course, a course on the proper use of crampons and ice axe does no harm.

Why slip with crampons anyway?

Improper walking, you get caught on pants or gaiters...

Why?

There are several answers. Due to the icy slope. With improper walking (legs apart) you can catch one crampon on the other. The most delicate is walking with crampons in wet snow when snowballs form under crampons creating so-called snowball, which we knock off with an ice axe strike on crampons.

Marjan Kregar (first Slovenian to do winter ascent of Dhaulagiri) told us at the winter mountain movement course that you can say you think you know how to walk in crampons when you've covered about 80,000 vertical meters in them.

Kamnik Saddle today, almost a crowd like in Tivoli. Nice sunny day, cold just right, hut open and people no less than in summer season. Nice conclusion before tomorrow's new work year.

It was really a great day and the crowd was probably not just due to the weather and holidays but also because the open hut invites.

Hi, I'm interested how far you can ski from Kamnik Saddle towards the foothills, probably to Jermanca for sure; further, I'd ask if anyone knows the conditions. Thanks and LP.

From Kamnik Saddle you can ski nicely a bit below the Pastirci, otherwise to Jermanca

At night we were at Kamnik Saddle! At midnight and under the full moon we arrived at the top. It was really nice! The moon shone so brightly that we didn't need headlamps! Despite the late hour, the keeper welcomed us kindly!nasmeh

Yesterday we parked at the lower parking lot; the path is trodden, but the snow was soft (like walking on sand) to the shepherds; further on it sank, so I got quite tired. There were lots of visitors too, weather wonderful and very warm.

I'm interested if anyone knows what the conditions at Kamnik Saddle are like? Is there high avalanche danger or can one go up?

Thanks!
