Holy Cross above Selce

These so-called hillocks in Škofjeloško and Cerkljansko hribovje are numerous and many have cute little churches. It would take some time to visit them all. One little church is Holy Cross above Selci. It was built by Austro-Hungarian or German colonists whom the emperor settled in Poljanska and Selška valley. In WWII the church was burned down. But much was preserved anyway. Interesting are the paintings in the entrance porch of the church at the entrance. Painted by Friulian masters. In the upper left corner is saint Kummernis with a beard—this saint originates from German lands. About this saint tells an interesting legend. Unfortunately on the church itself there is no panel that would talk about the little church.

We can even drive there on asphalt. Just before the hillock it's marked that asphalt is private property and we go to the church on a beaten little path through the little forest and across the meadow and we're at the little church. Or we can start much lower at the ecological island. Above the island a signpost directs us left to Mohor. Here faded marks lead us along the path further. The path brings us to the road past the church of St. Jedrt in Lajše and continues to the beginning of the village Dražgoše. At the beginning of the village we turn left to the transmitter. Here the peak is marked. Along the path we come further to our final goal—the church of Holy Cross.

One interesting variant for visiting these hillocks above the Selška valley was offered this year by TD Selca. You visit 4 Selca churches, of which 3 are on peaks. Besides the one mentioned above, you also visit Mohor, Miklavž and the church of Sv. Jedrt in Lajše (this one is not on the hilltop). The path is circular.

Sv. Križ is often one of the points on my circular paths, especially when I don't feel like driving somewhere.
From home in Železniki I first climb to Kališe, when the path brings me to the road from Selca, at the signpost for Dražgoše I usually go right past the houses instead, which brings me to the footpath from Selca, so the last ascent to the church is quite steep. To the church I have about 3 km and less than 450 m elevation gain.
I continue sometimes over Površnica (Sleme) to Dražgoše and then back to the valley via one of the shorter or longer variants depending on mood, sometimes I descend to Selca and behind Sora back to Železniki. Now the first variant will be more relevant because it's sunnier, Rovn and the path to Sora are distinctly shady, colder...

I used the last nice Sunday for the loop, some about it (+ sports tracker tech details) also at http://vencelj-sportnik.blogspot.si/2017/11/gibanje-v-urbanem-okolju-ali-v-naravi.html

After yesterday's Rašica trail I was today again on "my" terrain, I used the winter day for a 13 km regeneration loop from Železniki over Kres into the valleys and further to Dražgoše, through the village over Površnica (Sleme) and through Kališe back to Železniki.
Not much snow, in the valley not worth mentioning, in higher parts of my today's loop no more than 15 cm. In the forest a bit slippery, due to all-night rain wet leaves and mud under the snow... so careful!
More about it (route map, technicalities...) at http://vencelj-sportnik.blogspot.si/2017/11/3-trail-rasica-2o17.html , where I also write about yesterday's loop over Rašica and Šmarna gora.

Today I decided again for the full loop, visit of four churches around Selci.
Start from home in Železniki, through Kališe to Sv. Križ, over Površnica to Dražgoše, by road to Sv. Jederti, on marked path to Mohorja, descent to Pozirna and Jablanovec valley, to Dolenja vas, followed ascent to Miklavža and return to start.
Nothing wintery, no snow no ice, here and there where the path is driven by tractors or quads a bit of mud, on descents need to be careful.

Hello,
I'd like to add my view on this hill above Železniki.

Since I moved to these parts, it has become my favorite hill, as I can climb it on foot straight from home - past Češnjica through the forest to the meadows below Kališe village and then through the village on one side or the other to the top to the church. It takes me about 50 minutes or less than an hour to the top.
It would be nice if the approach from Železniki was described, as from that direction the peak is most visited!

At the top there is no logbook or stamp, but there is a bench by the church for sunbathing, views (Škofjeloško hribovje, Ratitovec) and blessed peace... Often I circle for extra views (Triglav, Kamniške) also to nearby Površnica.

In short, a somewhat overlooked peak that definitely deserves more visits!

Some yesterday's photos from the trip Selca - Sv. Križ - Kališe - Železniki.
The walked path is dry and normally passable. But it's an unmarked path.

Tadej, thanks! nasmeh
Otherwise there are many paths and trails through the forest towards Kališe, even to the top itself, I take my variant, but the start is the same. About Štalco I didn't know it exists...
Happy trails!

This little hill was on the plan for some time, but it didn't seem particularly attractive. So you could keep postponing it with the thought, yeah sometime you'll have to go up, since it's not even far. Well, since yesterday I don't think so anymore. Beautiful peak, beautiful view, view to Triglav and the path extension to Površnica is really great. There it might be even nicer. Wide views, with the entire Dražgoška gora in front, under which lies an idyllic village, and Kamniške on the other side, under which stands the little church of sv. Jedrti, which really attracts the eye. And Ratitovec, Kosmati vrh, in this snowy time really unforgettable.

We climbed up from Selca village and returned the same way. We didn't choose another path, since if you're somewhere for the first time, the way back is interesting too, it has different views. We just added two peaks along the way, namely Rožnik and Lepo Brdo. I'm already thinking about a soon repeat visit!

Nice, ločanka, welcome nasmeh
I go up regularly, last year I think more than 30x. If possible, I extend to Površnica for views. There it's nicest for me in spring when the old cherry tree blooms on top ...
Then I can go back to Kališe even by road, because no traffic. In short, paths for all tastes, but no crowds!

Ločanka, I've already gotten many ideas for trips from you. So I was on Saturday for the first time at Sv. Križ and it's really beautiful. I made a nice circular tour: Selca - Sv. Križ - Površnica - excursion to Bičkove skale - return to the farm and across meadows to Sv. Jedrt - along the marked path to Mohorja and return by road to Selca.
It was enjoyable.
