Hello! I have a quite wide (spoiled) forefoot and high instep, which boots do you recommend for mostly summer high-mountain hikes and some ferrata in between? Thanks in advance for the hints and all the best in the mountains.

Hi, I'm thinking about buying Alpina's Lhotse model (I can get it for 170 EUR). I tried it on and it fits my foot okay. I'd use it for summer and winter hikes in the mountains (in winter also with crampons). For easier paths I already have some low hiking shoes, Lhotse would be for more demanding challenges. Since I know nothing, what would be suitable for me, I'm interested if this is a good choice? I'd like something quality, better to pay a bit more and have it longer. And one more thing - there's supposed to be some material difference between the brown and orange model (Nubuk vs. Perwanger)... since color doesn't matter to me, price is the same, I'm interested if anyone knows which material is "better" (or what the difference between them is)? Thanks for the help!

Thanks, it's really well written there! I'm just interested if you think these boots are suitable for summer too or more winter ones?

1. It's a pity to use a winter boot for rock. 2. A stiff winter boot is awkward to walk in. 3. Winter boot is heavy. 4. Winter boot is too hot for summer. If you go once in summer and once in winter to the hills, then have one boot. If you hike regularly to the hills, then you need more boots anyway.

Today I bought these boots, before I tried them at least 5x with different socks and they fit like a glove. Looked and tried others in various shops but none like these. Afternoon boots on feet and 3-hour snow hike with about 400m elevation. Pleasant walk without blisters or sore feet. Price 220 minus 30% at GRS.

I completely agree with Maja O. I was almost emotionally attached to Asolo Mythos model, which even reminded me of Greek beer, hahaha, after five years went to rags. Searched same model, finally found, but this boot not even shadow of first ones. Because problems with too long big toe (every boot pinches when put on), too narrow foot (all too wide), really bit complicated, finally find Hanwags, same as MajaO has.... yes price quite high, but only boot where everything fits. Although not high mountaineer, not climber, take medium paths, good boot first condition for safe walking.

Are you buying a summer boot? PS under question: are the sellers in Iglu, Kibuba, Promontana, Markacija, Terra sport, .... really so "useless" for advice on the spot?

Garmont has a wider last in my experience. Karakorum has slots for automatic crampons. But both are quite heavy boots. Karakorum maybe a bit more than Pinnacle. A while ago I was also looking for all-year boots and chose Scarpa Weissmiss because Scarpa's last fits me. They have fittings for semi-automatic crampons which suits my winter needs. Plus Scarpa has "toe box" for the big toe. That's important for me because of an old injury. A colleague has LS Trango Alp and is happy. This type of boot is more modern and materials lighter. Nice if the boot isn't too warm and too heavy for summer. But important that the boot grips the heel well. Especially important for walking with crampons, at least in my experience, otherwise the heel starts hurting. I tried Millet, Zamberlan and La Sportiva but stuck with Scarpa. For Alpina the sole's instep is too high for me. Solution imo is long testing of different models. If you already have some good boots, maybe first look at the same manufacturer. regards

rja: I have Garmont pinnacle gtx, bought last fall, and they seem like quite stiff boots for all-year use to me. They have performed well for me, but I'll use them only in winter, as they seem simply too stiff and too hot for summer. They might be okay for others, but I prefer softer and more comfortable boots in summer. In combination with semi-automatic crampons, they perform great due to the very rigid sole. Also, I warn that they are not really for wide feet and the ankle part maybe doesn't give as much support as wanted. But because of that, they may be more comfortable than "hardcore" models. Best to take socks with you and try them in the store...
