Has anyone been to Dolkova špica this week? I'm interested in snow conditions - crampons needed?

To the bivouac there are two or three snowfields, where two days ago around 10h we didn't need winter gear. Otherwise we turned to Križ but maybe the pic from the top will help you mežikanje

Today from Vrata to Bivak IV and further along the marked path to Pogačnikov dom. Below Gubni I turn right towards Dolkova Spica. At the top it was quite cold in the morning, but nice. A cold wind was blowing, so I sat in the shelter and munched. Views over the sea of fog were wonderful. It was nice to observe the Karavanke in the distance and their battle with the fog today nasmeh

. I descended from Dolkova Spica and continued to Križ and Stenar. At the end I also climbed Bovški Gamsovec and through Luknja back to Vrata, where I finished a nice loop tour. The path was dry and without peculiarities. Cheers!

P.S: Most photos taken with phone this time, as I mistakenly took empty batteries for camera zadrega

Friday 29.5.2015 sunset on Dolkova Spica. Upper part of the path still has lots of snow that sinks underfoot.

Yesterday, 2.6. on Dolkova Spica, despite evening forecast "chance of thunderstorms and showers" and initial rain in the valley, there was something to see... Snow is really south-facing, soft and tiring to walk, but doable.

On Sunday to Dolkova Spica via west path both ways, weather dramatic but no rain, no peculiarities on path, winter gear not needed although crampons were in backpack velik nasmeh

Today I had this mountain in mind, namely via SE ridge. Incredibly, start from marked path onto steep grass and arrival of thick fog coincided, so I persisted in direction only half hour, due to wet grass (rain previous day plus morning dew), wet ground and ominous fog I turned back, returned to marked path and off towards Škrlatica to Zadnji Dolek. By the way quick hop to Kucelj, to Rdeča škrbina and to top of Dolkova Spica. Fog rolled from valley on purpose, almost no views, Škrlatica I could only sense. Descent left and somewhat satisfied ego hurried to valley...for a beer! jezik

But I'll come back...

Filming the terrain, in the end it turned out meaningless.

My new companion Mirna calmly endured my outbursts and kept silent devotedly... she will be invited again :)

we had the same situation on Friday, but we then went to sun on Križ and to Pogačnik...tough luck...next time velik nasmeh

During descent on steep grasses I pondered various continuation scenarios, first was going to Vrata and "resting from workday cool

" and repeat ascent today, but then day goes to nothing...no, I told myself, today this mountain is goal, one way or another I'll climb up. Anyway fog everywhere, so nothing else left. Definitely repeat soon, that's how it is with föhn - air rises from valley higher and cools and then this mess happens! mežikanje

today on Dolkove Špice via SE ridge...since still enough energy, headed also to Križ and Stenar nasmeh

Weather to shout about and hiking itch won't leave me alone. With Rajko we quickly agree and on Tuesday exactly at eight we leave Vrata, where already 7 velik nasmeh

parked cars. Temperature just right, sun pleasant, little snow, on top little breeze, but Rajko quickly found right shelter where during the whole time of stay on the mountain enjoyed pleasant warmth shirtless. From top we observed 3 hikers ascending neighboring Rakova špica. Didn't meet other people except two younger couples on Škrlatica.
And warning; Don't let various weather forecasts about inversion, 9 degrees at two and a half and such mislead you. Where snow really not fully sunlit, it's hard as concrete, so proper gear always at hand.
