Yes, as I say, I carry it on the body too, actually on the belt. But according to experience, the biggest advantage is the Li-ion battery. Because ordinary (AA) ones at lower temperatures no longer give energy from themselves. Then you arrive at the hut where it's warm and the camera starts working normally.

I carry my old Canon in winter always in a pouch under clothes, either jacket or windbreaker; the lenses (viewfinder, lens) have never fogged up for me. With this way of carrying, it is always at hand; the only downside is unzipping the clothes often. Of course it is extra secured, with the camera strap with small clip attached to the pouch strap, which prevents dropping. I use 2100 mAh batteries (4), charge them every 14 days; usually in that time 7-8 tours, each with 30-100 shots. Biggest battery drain is the display (I can close it) and sound effects. So both off, I shoot through the viewfinder.

The idea that it is advisable to protect the camera usually occurs to most people only after its close encounter with a rock. At least that was the case with me. I solved the issue similarly to Igor and it works excellently. Bagi

We learn from mistakes. So it is smart to listen to experienced users of digital cameras. I am a beginner in digital technology. LP

I have the camera clipped directly onto the regular system that I always have clipped to the loop of the backpack or climbing harness.

My climbing partner's camera fell during the abseil into the notch between V. Rokav and V. Oltar. It flew about 10 cm past my head, why... Because, freely after Prešeren, it was in his pocket, but the pocket unzipped. A similar thing happened to me except mine slipped from my hands while changing SD and landed about 500 m lower in Tamar... What can we do, it's consumable material, if you carry it warm and it's "secured" nothing happens to it. It works at -20 too, although it "grinds" abnormally long!

I still use the dig. camera Sony DSC-73; it has almost 10,000 photos taken, about 850 I also put on this forum, I'm a bit interested which camera would make better pictures, I saw a dig. camera for 130 euros that makes very bad pictures.

I had Olympus SP600UZ, it was 220 eur and I sold it soon. On it only 15x zoom was good, pictures average, now warming up for Nikon 3100, does anyone have experiences or should I just take Sony. Otherwise here's an interesting website for comparing digitals: snapsort.com

For a year and a half I've been using Canon Powershot SX20. Would rather use DSLR, but two factors outweighed - weight and price . For now quite satisfied, upgraded camera software with CHDK program which adds quite some more room (esp. RAW). Recently its second successor SX40 came out. My hill pictures are at: Pictures

@ladko on the link below you have some tests and comparisons between DSLR and compacts and reviews of photo gear. Choice between Nikon 3100 and Sony... dunno. Nikon is known to be super for panoramas and with Canon top of photo gear. Sony took Konica-Minolta, dunno how much they invest in development. Had Konica 5D, predecessor of Sony Alpha line and very satisfied with pics. When looking for DSLR looked for 5D too but nobody wanted to sell. So landed on Nikon D100 and very satisfied. True 10 years old but with 6 megapixels makes super pics. Don't need more. Maybe fixed wide-angle and tele lens and done. In wall a bit annoying with DSLR... just strap it to harness so doesn't swing like pendulum. Check http://www.dpreview.com/ for easier decision

I have Canon 550D, very satisfied with pictures but it's a bit big and hard to carry along, so I carry old Canon which is smaller and also very good. LP

I use Nikon D300s with 16-85 mm lens. This year I also bought an extra bag so I can carry it on my belly. Really ideal option. I always have it with me and those two kilos don't bother me at all.. hehe.. You can check out the pictures on M-foto.si

@ mistirje Last year I was at the presentation of this model and I have to say it surprised me both with the quality of shots and the set of interesting features - shooting in almost complete darkness, combining consecutive shots into huge panoramic images, interesting macro functions with background blur, huge zoom, excellent HD video clips and more ... Anyway read some test on the net. It definitely positively surprised me and I soon convinced a colleague who was just buying a camera and now he's thrilled with the model.

I use handy small Nikon Coolpix S 8000 (similarly protected as "bagi" describes above) or Canon EOS 350 D. Although both a bit dated - especially EOS - they serve their purpose excellently...

Marky, have you maybe ever used 18-105 VR? I have it too, but I'm thinking if I should replace it with 16-85. Can you tell what's the comparison like (apart from millimeters)?

#Tomažke I had the mentioned lens on Nikon D90 and was satisfied with it until I held the 16-85 in my hands. Build quality, sharpness, focusing speed, wide angle 16mm.. convinced me to buy it and I'm maximally satisfied with it (of course, regarding zoom lenses).
