Thanks, but regarding difficulty I meant the Austrian scale. Also in route descriptions I miss intermediate times - how much walk to the hut, how long is the ferrata itself etc. Lp

Thanks, those are the right data, up to C and a bit D is still ok for me, into more I don't venture. Lp

Civetta is very moderate difficulty, nothing significantly harder than secured paths in our hills. Just long and strenuous tour, technically nothing special.

You're asking very unclearly; around Civetta there are several huts; for ascent and descent two are important!? If you'd looked back a bit you'd see we mostly recommend start at Casera della Grava (no hut there), from where you need about two hours to ferrata start. From there to summit normally another three hours walk. From this start you need 8-9h for whole tour, but it all depends on individual. On difficulty I wouldn't, but note that on descent below Torrani hut (normal route-so you don't accidentally go to Tissi!!!) there are quite some fixed ropes. Snow ten days ago wasn't much to see at these heights, but now surely different story. Huts? In Dolomites usually close first weekend in October, the one on top even earlier I think...

Mirank, I don't know if you're replying to me or Primozz who asks about snow? I got a clear answer from Jax on the question, wanted to know basics of difficulty and times, don't plan to go to Dolomites anymore this year, been there already. When I go, I'll definitely look for more info. Thanks and best.

Big thanks for the info @Razbojnik, I will check and call, @Edina, I'm watching the webcams so I saw that it was whitened again today nasmeh If it doesn't work, then some lower plan B with less or no snow velik nasmeh We've waited too long for the Dolomites and poked around home peaks, then snow crosses plans early again... velik nasmeh In August I don't like hiking such ferratas because of the crowds

Actually from the start of the vacation (19.-20.8.). In between it snowed a bit... probably melted again.

Beautiful autumn days called for a Dolomites visit and this time Monte Civetta came up. We usually explore the wider area, so we took 2 days for her too. We traversed the long way around, which we'd do exactly the same again after seeing it nasmeh.

We started in Palafavera, where there is plenty of free parking. Signs at its edge directed us to path 564 towards the Pioda pasture. There we turned left onto 556 all the way to the Coldai hut and branched off there onto path 557 towards ferrata Alleghesi.

The branch to the ferrata is marked on the rock, and a bit before that we admired the crowds in the wall. Since most hikers were German-speaking, the word *Stau* was most often used for jams. That means in Slovenian you'll be stau velik nasmeh. The crowds didn't hinder us much, as a friendly greeting and thanks always opened a free path to pegs, brackets and cables. There are plenty everywhere, as people of all sorts of experience climb here.

The ferrata environment is nice, typically Dolomitic, technical difficulties nowhere exceed category C. But ferrata Alleghesi is long enough that it should not be underestimated. Weather is also an important factor, which due to the high altitude can quickly create winter conditions. We couldn't have wished for better weather and soon we huffed up to Monte Civetta. First we feasted our eyes on the vast views, then satisfied our hunger at the Torrani hut right below the summit. The hut is special and very pleasant, and they brew coffee on a hand-operated machine. Literally nasmeh.

We planned to overnight at the Vazzoler hut, so we descended via ferrata Tissi. This is quite a different story from Alleghesi. It runs in an area of vertical walls that with their might demand respect from rarer visitors. Technical difficulties go up to C/D category, the protections were in excellent condition this time. The descent via ferrata is supposed to be easier than the ascent according to some reports, but that could be debated. In short... the ferrata is of the harder sort and demanding, but at the same time very beautiful. Whoever has enough experience will surely enjoy it.

This was followed by a long descent to the Vazzoler hut along path 558, all the way in nice surroundings and great weather. We had reserved the overnight stay the day before, which proved to be a good decision given the weekend. The hut was full and at dinner there were barely enough seats for everyone. But everything ran smoothly, staff friendly, food good, prices reasonable. Bottom line, we were more than satisfied.

The next day we viewed the Civetta range from the other side too. At the Vazzoler hut we found path 560, which led us in nice surroundings towards the Tissi hut. We also had things to see on this side. Here are home to Dolomitic towers that climbers adore. Civetta is unrecognizable from here, but that doesn't matter. The whole range above the valley along which the path runs makes a strong impression. All the way to the Tissi hut, where we took a break, and further to the popular Lago del Coldai lake. It wasn't far to the Coldai hut anymore and there we closed the loop. This was followed by descent to the valley to the starting point and we sped off to new adventures. More information follows in the photostory ...

Parking coordinates (Palafavera): 46.4019850N, 12.1014211E
Morning Civetta, shyly wrapped in a white veil1
From the parking lot we gently ascend to Pioda pasture, where we turn left2
Along path 564 and then 556 we continue towards Rif. Coldai hut3
The path is densely paved with uncomfortable stones, so we take trodden shortcuts4
Surprise. I capture an extremely rare specimen of high alpine Vespa :)5
We choose 557, which leads us through high alpine terrain to the branch for Alleghesi via ferrata6
Crowds in the via ferrata are visible from afar. This time we will obviously have plenty of company7
Right at the entrance surprisingly there is no one. Maybe it won't be so bad after all8
And right behind the bend two are already testing their safety kits9
We politely greet them and quickly step aside. We are already past...10
The via ferrata tenses the muscles a little, ours too :)11
There are enough quality holds, progress is fast12
The wall becomes a shade more vertical13
Soon a chimney replaces it. The ascent is not difficult, the aids are excellent14
Over the steepest parts they have hammered enough pegs for comfortable progress15
Two more have caught us. We overtake them on the ledge16
Probably the hardest part of this ferrata, which does not exceed C difficulty category17
There are plenty of pegs and cables, nevertheless you must watch where you place your step18
The wall is so steep despite the aids that one diligently clips on :)19
We are already past it. The terrain levels out, aids remain20
Next challenge. The rock is excellent and boots hold well21
We catch a larger group. It will be harder to pass22
But no problems. We greet them and thank as they move aside23
Now we are alone. Enjoying the sun and good rock24
Still a few traverses on the exposed wall await us25
And we are already at the summit. Not many visitors, probably due to the late season26
View of Alleghe lake and Rif. Tissi hut above it. We reach it tomorrow27
View of Cimo di Tomb and Tissi ferrata in its walls. That is our today's goal28
But first we indulge in a rest at the pleasant Rif. Torrani hut just below Civetta29
All together it looks more like a shelter, but the hut has everything big ones have30
After rest we descend to path fork. We choose Tissi ferrata ...31
View back to the saddle. Descent on black ice sprinkled with scree.32
Narrow, poorly trodden path leads us into the dark gully.33
Around the bend the sun awaits us, illuminating the gloomy surroundings.34
Some horizontal traversing follows, then descent into the valley.35
Initial sections are nothing special, but the via ferrata is rated C/D.36
Soon we understand why it has such a rating. The via ferrata plummets :)37
I can't manage many photos, this one is just a sample :)38
Subsequent passages follow a less steep variant but much smoother one.39
The cable is flawless everywhere and taut like a string.40
The end is more benign and finishes on scree.41
View back to the wall where the Tissi via ferrata runs.42
We are already in the high alpine cirque. The pyramid in the photo center is Civetta.43
Traverse to Forcella delle Sasse saddle and further to Grava pasture.44
We take it straight to Rif. Vazzoler hut.45
The path is comfortable and runs through picturesque terrain.46
View back. We just passed under those walls.47
On the right too, mighty towers open up.48
Below the path enters scree which is cleared and does not obstruct progress.49
Walls above Vazzoler hut, popular with climbers.50
Moiazza massif. In the background one of the hardest Dolomite via ferratas … Gianni Costantini.51
Just before the hut, the last signpost for our accommodation.52
A real mountaineer greets us. He is a bit advanced in years, so he is already quite wooden :)53
Inside everything is tidy and clean. At dinner a nice group gathers.54
Morning of the next day. We walk in shade and coolness, so we put on everything we have.55
The valley is beautiful, the views of the Civetta massif are wonderful from this side too.56
Summit of Cima di Col Rean right above Rif. Tissi hut.57
View into the valley to Alleghe village and its namesake lake.58
Tissi hut, where we stop for a short rest and everything that goes with it.59
We continue along the valley. Here the running event TransCivetta has been held for 40 years.60
Followed by the ascent to Coldai pass.61
But first we reach the high-alpine gem … Lago del Coldai lake.62
A little further we close the loop. Back at Coldai hut where we were the previous day.63
We often meet well-equipped hikers walking one of the variants of the Dolomites Alta Via.64
Coldai hut, on weekends a tourist magnet.65
On descent we meet whole processions, also many *opankarji*.66
We are already lower. Via the road in the photo we return to the start. In background Monte Pelmo.67
GPS track of the hiked route. In two days: 31 km and 2900 m elevation gain.68

This time we followed @mirank's advice and started from Grava pasture. Almost from it, because we parked a bit lower due to the ruined road in the upper part. We hadn't been here before and were curious how it looks and what the approaches from this starting point are like. So it wouldn't all be too short, we planned ascent via ferrata Tissi, continuation to Civetta and partial descent via ferrata Alleghesi. Lower we wanted to turn back to the pasture via transverse path 557. But this *partial* descent via Alleghesi took and took. The map shows only the plan, not the steepness, and the seemingly very short path to the junction turned into a long descent with numerous cables. In the end we did almost the whole ferrata downwards, only then we reached the transverse path in the valley. Happens velik nasmeh. More in photo story…

Coordinates of starting point (Malga Grava): 46°21'47.768"N, 12°5'26.329"E
We park a bit below Malga Grava, since the road is rough and not suitable for longer cars with low ground clearance.1
The actual goal is not yet noted here, but we head towards the Forcella de la Grava saddle, path 557.2
Malga Grava, an alpine pasture in the true sense without superfluous tourism.3
Behind it we turn left onto the wide track4
In this direction we go …5
Immediately behind the alpine pasture is an extensive campsite full of children on holiday6
We are already at the lower station of the cargo cableway to the Rif. Torrani shelter7
Here is also a junction where we turn left towards the Rif. Vazzoler hut8
Oh dear, up there we have to go ….9
To top it off the red marks lead us too far right and we have to correct our course10
The Forcella delle Sasse saddle looks very close but in this heat it is more of a mirage :)11
The strenuous ascent is wordlessly accompanied by the surrounding peaks12
A little more and we will be over …13
And then comes the via ferrata section14
This one is quite short, more an introduction to what follows …15
On the other side of the saddle we spot the familiar Val delle Sasse valley. We have been here before16
On the upper traverse path we turn right towards the Tissi via ferrata17
We are already in it …18
These slanting ledges we did the other time in the opposite direction. We descended this via ferrata back then19
But we have the feeling we haven't been here yet. The direction of travel obviously makes its difference20
The sun has caught us again. Despite the height we are sweating profusely21
A few strong pulls follow and we can catch our breath again briefly22
The steel cables are flawless and mostly well tensioned23
Optical illusion. Although it looks like a stroll, there is a vertical wall right beneath us.24
Here the depth is already somewhat more noticeable...25
The vertical eases, the via ferrata becomes wall traversing.26
A little more and Tissi will be behind us.27
View back on the via ferrata. We came from the plain down there.28
Right below the slope break we are surprised by a pleasant cooling :)29
Rif. Torrani at altitude 2984 m right below Civetta.30
It's been here since 1935 and offers only basic comfort. Nevertheless it's very pleasant.31
The prices surprise us. Half liter of beer and excellent coffee cost only 7.5 € and that at nearly 3000 m. Slovenian huts, hello...32
The shelter is really small, but has a view like few others33
This below we just reworked34
The summit part is adapted to numerous visitors of Civetta35
At the summit. The heat is such that my chocolate melts at altitude over 3200 meters. No wind anywhere36
We will descend on the other side37
The time is late, so from the opposite direction there are not many mountaineers38
After initial descent on summit slope the more demanding part begins39
The environment is increasingly wild, steel cables increasingly frequent40
One of the key points of Alleghesi, high chimney with countless brackets41
Every now and then need to check the next step …42
Otherwise this happens :)43
This way also works …44
Hmm, where will we two reach that cross path ???45
All this we already reworked, but no junction yet ….46
Finally it came. Returns to start, here also normal route from Rif. Torrani joins47
Another important junction we have, this time turn left down to path 55748
Here skewer the sausage. Already at lower station of cargo cableway49
In camp already cooking dinner and all smells of dry wood. Interestingly tents not directly on ground50
Late and even the calf can't roam anymore :) We conclude …51
Accumulated hot 13 km and 1600 elevation with plenty of scrambling in gullies :)52

Congratulations, but I would have chosen the opposite direction, because ascent through that scree to F delle Sasse is repulsive to me. I'm curious about which crossing, connection you're writing. In my opinion you did entire Alleghesi in descent and then turned right to 557?

bagi1. 09. 2025 04:23:49
Yes, we returned via 557. Chose this direction only because of Tissi, to see which way is easier velik nasmeh. As for the path, ascent to Selle delle Sasse is OK, but really long, especially always in the sun.
