When meeting a bear you must stop and not flee. I noticed they sell special spray-tear gas for repelling bears. It's good to have with you if you have time to activate it and confuse the bear. If your hands don't shake too much when in shock.

As far as I know, the bear since April 25, 1871, when it attacked Špik in Trenta, hasn't attacked humans anymore. So fear is unnecessary, caution is in place mežikanje

It was a few years ago. The attacked boy's cousin told me. They were picking mushrooms. He was with a dog. The bear shredded his arm. Luckily he survived. Dogs must be on leash.

But where does this fear of bears come from? Bear does nothing to a human. I've met one already and it didn't even look at me...
(The only animal that can really be dangerous to a human is the human.)

I wouldn't want to act smart but I can tell some of my experiences, since I go to Veliki Javornik above Cerkniško jezero several times a week where it's bear area and I meet it often too. Last time 14 days ago a she-bear with cub, which was only 20 meters from us with the dog but she just observed us and calmly went her way. I don't recommend shouting, running away, throwing on the ground as some recommend, but calmly observe the bear's movement and slowly retreat from it, be audible on the trail (bell, talking, singing...), if the bear charges at you drop something of yourself on the ground (shirt, gloves, hat, backpack ...) the bear will definitely stop and play with the dropped thing and then go its way. Bear hears, smells and sees very well, so it moves far away from human and no fear of attack. Spray you get at Lovec store in BTC, hall A, Lj. Darinka you'll meet a bear sooner or later, I heard they saw it in Nanos area, where you also occasionally roam... or am I wrong. Good luck and no fear... I fear unbalanced people more than bear.

slavkoa summed it up very well!
I live in bear area (between Kočevje and Notranjska) and fully agree with him. My experiences are that the bear fears humans much more than vice versa, usually I see it when it's already fleeing from me (it's very fast though, running away from it is pointless). You need to observe the surroundings a bit, and with poles every 5 minutes tap one against the other a bit, that's become a habit for me. I think the problem would only be if you surprise the bear (that's why I tap the poles) OR if you get between a she-bear and cubs (that's why I watch surroundings while walking). Haven't had unpleasant encounters yet, and the bad feeling is gone. I fear ticks more.

It wasn't in Trenta. In Snežniški gozdovi. Probably the bear wouldn't have attacked if the dog was on a leash. Because it was off leash that's what happened. Haven't met a bear yet although I go there too where it roams. Last time I was alert when going to Snežnik through the forest. But didn't meet it.☺

Three years ago I had a close encounter with a furry one with two cubs. It was on North Velebit, luckily I was still at the beginning of the trail and not far to the forest road. I was alone and quiet, so we surprised each other. She reared up on hind legs and charged at me. I started yelling and banging poles and she really stopped, spun in three circles, then the cubs pulled her away, she behind them. Me of course back. Pulse rose a lot... but ended well. nasmeh

As every year, we also spent this year's five-day vacation in Posočje. Seems to me we'll never run out of beautiful spots. Every time we have to go back, a bunch of new goals come up.
For some "unfortunately", for others "fortunately", there are more tourists in the valley every year. It didn't bother us though, as the place where we recharged after daily tours is quite away from tourist hustle. Generally we choose places with fewer people. We adjusted goals according to weather forecast on the go, sometimes more, sometimes less successfully, but no regret for any day spent there, even if some peak planned at home wasn't summited. For the last day (yesterday) several peaks were in play, but finally Čisti vrh won. Maybe slightly tired from previous days, we looked for something shorter and lower or maybe both felt we had to go there.
Friend used to come here often and in a way we can say we finally said dignified goodbye to him. Unfortunately due to work obligations we couldn't last year. Igor, rest in peace.
The path is really well marked with cairns and easy to follow. Soon after start there's a small stream along the path, no other water. And most importantly, on the whole path we heard no engines, yelling, honking,... nothing. On summit magnificent views to walls of Veliki Špič, Kanjavec, Triglav, Zadnjiški Ozebnik almost within reach, also Pihavec, Stenar, Križ, Razor, Prisank, Mojstrovke, Jalovec, Pelci, Mangrt, B. Grintavec, Kanin range and other hills around Bovec like on palm. Huts at Prehodavci, Kriške pode, Tičarjev dom at Vršič visible, probably also Zavetišče pod Špičkom which I couldn't spot. No bear encountered mežikanje

Can someone tell me what the road from Soča to the starting point is like? Narrow, precipitous, steep and in what condition? I have a very low car...

To the first barrier, before which there's a quite large parking on the right, the road is asphalt. The road isn't excessively steep anywhere and wide enough that meeting other vehicles isn't a problem. From parking you continue on foot anyway nasmeh

Friday 4.10. we met in Soča village and drove to the barrier. All four first time on this peak, which they say is a viewpoint. We had the description written on paper with us. But we didn't notice the cairn and went further along the road until we realized the road goes too much downhill somewhere. Back to the starting point a bit higher, where there's a house below and luckily the guy was outside preparing firewood. He kindly explained our path. Yeah when you're first time. Right by the cairn, which is a bit lower into the slope on a path that's not exactly trodden but visible. And again across the road and wow right there we had looked at the trail before but didn't know it was the right one. After that no more issues. Nice path. No bears. No one else on the path either. When we got to Drt saddle it started clouding over. From there to the top not far. Some snowflakes swirled in the light wind. Stayed on top quite a while, views really nice. Triglav got covered now and then, Lepo Špičje visible all the time. To three hours thirty we added one hour we missed. First time everything's new.
despite the description, we missed the path.1

Darinka, super. Next time from Čez Drt saddle to Trebiški valley, from there to Ozebnik and descent to Zadnjica. Arrange transport to starting point there on the side, you know mežikanje

Ooooo, Darinka, I saved this peak for you, which still awaits me this year despite having been there several times. It really is THE TRUE viewpoint and Trenta solitude - well, if there's no famous crowd on it... And, turbo....where can one arrange the mentioned transport...
