FOR tomorrow's visit we're deciding between. For BEGUNJŠČICA the trail start would be at LJUBELJ. How long approx. is the trail to visit the hut at ZELENICA, summit of BEGUNJŠČICA and Roblekov dom and return to Ljubelj. For STOL the trail start would be somewhere between Žirovnica and Valvazorjev dom. Where is the best start. THANKS for your answers. Best regards from Koroška Izidor

I'm setting off on a 2-day tour specifically to Begunjščica from Ljubelj via Zelenica to the summit, returning to Roblek's hut---now my question!? Is there a path from Roblek to Stol!? Not too demanding, because we have 2 13-year-old kids!!! Thanks

The most difficult part of the trail is from the hut at Zelenica to the ridge of Begunjščica. Here you need to be a bit careful at some spots but where needed there are safety aids. Also in the upper part of the trail to the summit of Begunjščica you need to be careful but in dry conditions the path is not difficult. From Roblekov Dom towards Stol you need to descend a quite steep path to the upper part of Završnica valley (1200m). Then continue towards the hut at Izvir Završnice and further along the marked path to the summit of Stol. You can return to the hut at Zelenica also via the path you came. I'm attaching two photos from the Zelenica - Begunjščica trail section http://www.hribi.net/slika.asp?pot=2155 http://www.hribi.net/slika.asp?pot=2156

Personally I would skip Begunjščica and climb it on the way back. But I would go from Ljubelj to Vrtača, and to Stol, and on the way back visit Begunjščica..

Oh. For visiting Begunjščica I suggest the following route: Ljubelj, then along Baronova pot to Preval and via Kalvarija to summit of Begunjščica. Route should end via Roblekov dom to Zelenica and back to Ljubelj. To Preval 1h, to summit 1.5h, to Zelenica 2h. It's an extremely beautiful route and really recommended circular route.

Just one thing to add for this variant, that Kalvarija rightfully bears its name: the trail is indeed very, very steep. Definitely more recommended for ascent than descent. Good luck!

Sorry - I really forgot to write that, because as a local it seems obvious to me . Kalvarija is really steep, but it's worth enduring. I also wish you a safe trip.

Hi! Recently I did the mentioned route to Begunjščica myself, but in the opposite direction as described by the lady before me. To Zelenica from Ljubelj you need 1-1.5h, from Zelenica to Roblekov dom approx 1.5h, from there to summit Begunjščica just under one hour. Descent via Kalvarija definitely not recommended, because it's really very steep (seemed quite nasty to me, others may differ). Smarter in my opinion to return to Roblekov dom and then via Roža cross the southern slope of Begunjščica to Preval. From there to Ljubelj another 1h of very interesting trail. LP!

The trail from Zelenica to Stol is beautiful, I call it one pure song. Only the last bit under the summit is scree. There it always wears me out. But it is forgotten immediately when I huff to the top. No worries and good luck.

The trail from Zelenica to Stol runs along the slope of Vrtača. But it must be said that before the last ascent the trail descends by ca. 100 meters of altitude. After the scree it's good to stick to the marked trail and not push through the scree on your own. From my experience I can say it's very tiring and takes a lot of energy (you know one step up, two down). The whole trail otherwise drags on, especially if returning the same day. But I join the predecessors that the trail is wonderful. I've walked it many times myself. LP

From Zelenica to Stol there are two trails - the upper one, except for one short descent (a little caution is needed), is very nice. The lower one was about a month ago very overgrown and it's quite dangerous not to step on some snake. Both trails join a bit below the scree. There, regardless that it's marked as easy, it is necessary (especially on descent) to be quite careful. Still it can't compare in difficulty with Kalvarija From Valvazorjev dom direction I haven't gone to Stol yet, so you'll have to wait for some other answer

Today my husband and I first ascended to Stol from Valvazorjev dom via Žirovnica trail. To Prešernova koča we took 3 hours walking with several short breaks, since mostly constantly gaining height. Then to summit another 10 min. Wonderful view to Triglav, Vrtača, Begunjščica, all to Krn and Austrian side. Back via Zabreška pot, which is a bit longer but easier. Since it's our 6th cross behind us, we're quite proud we walked the trail without problems, recommend to you too. It was very crowded though.

You can also descend from Roblek via Macesnovec, and arrive a bit before Tinčkova hut, there you can then climb to Stol either via the lower path, or cross and reach Zabreška path somewhere at 1400 m. I recommend a map.

So, reporting back once more. On Wednesday we headed to STOL, plan change right before leaving home. From Valvazorjev dom to summit Stol (3 hours plus some minutes with breaks and photos). Descent via Zabreška pot (2 hours). It was wonderful with great views. LP Izidor
