Yesterday evening after work driving home by car across Goriška plain, looking at Krn, white again! At 4:15 this morning already at Planina Kuhinja, alone, still lightly drizzling, start hiking towards Krn on wet marked path. At Planina Zaslap last clouds retreat, stops drizzling, there I turn off headlamp and pack it. A bit above Drežniško sedlo, at junction turn right, on marked wide stone mule track towards Krnska Škrbina or saddle between Krn and Batognica. At about 1800m all newly snowed, but snow no issues for walking. In gully below saddle still lots of snow. At saddle fantastic. Nature carved tunnel in 3m snow layer with wind and warmth. From there path to Batognica fully snowed, WWI steps icy. At summit no wind, still huge snow. Down via snowfields below Vrh nad Peski through Lužniško jezero.

This one from last weekend...conditions will change/have changed... Beautiful day to stay in valley. Decide for Peske or Batognica, somewhere there. Via "classic" past Leskovica and Lake in Lužnica…or maybe straight old hunter's path up gully to saddle between Batognica and Srednji vrh. Thought latter maybe not brilliant idea…uhm…and indeed it WASN'T. On scree to gully still huge iron from WWI. Noticeable less visits here. At gully entrance snow starts. Progress well, penetrates just enough for stable steps (and not just holding few teeth). When snowfield ends turn right to grassy slopes. Here winter gear definitely works better than on rock. Quite near summit reach rock step. Not liking idea to continue, turn left again where snowfield. Goes well up to new rock step, looked easy from below. Wasn't. Wet rock, holds so-so. Here really don't "try". Descend back to previous rock step above grass. Look around bit, pack winter gear and go over. After 10m crampons on again and bit more to saddle. From here head to Batognica, but didn't go to summit. Spot rock with nice view, pull out snack and open beer there. Then think deeper. Today, given conditions, really not smartest. Bit too careless. Here could sit long, but need to go down. Continue along ridge of Srednji vrh, at end traverse down somehow. Straight down more climbing, enough for today. And when only easy descent to valley left, last stupidity follows. Double! Removed crampons already, walked dry in between. Also on slope to Lake in Lužnica snow soft and boots hold. Until ice tongue appears…and "textbook" slide. Though after ca. 2m ice axe textbook raking slope, speed not decreasing. If continues will bathe in lake! So no textbook, dig boots into snow. Good stopping training when "textbook" fails…just not in short sleeves :/ Only last descent part meet couple people. First 2 Italians. Headed only to lake. Then hikers met at start. Returning from Rdeči rob. Finally ski tourers.

Thanks for such good description of conditions and detailed "experience". Such posts adorn the forum when one also warns of own mistakes and doesn't just post stuff where everything looks just beautiful, easy and safe! And safe steps further, LP, Ben

@Bandzo, thanks Yeah, that's why I posted; sometimes you have to admit "I kinda fucked up there". Since in 99%+ of posts everything is super anyway, problems, especially one's own mistakes, are rarely mentioned.

That's right, Trobec, rarely does anyone admit that they got off track, got lost or got injured. But that happens too.

Hi! I'm curious about the conditions on the path from Kuhinja to the summit via Krnska Škrbina (snowfields, markings, danger, etc.)? Thanks =)

The path is normally passable, happy trails.

Now it's so hot that there's no snow danger anymore either, but it's pretty hot, no danger, normal path

On Sunday from planina Kuhinja via planina Kašina and Leskovec up the right gully to Srednji vrh. Then we turned left. The goal was Vrh nad peski, but in the end we were satisfied with Batognica. We skied down Lužnica right under Škofič, to avoid the ascent to the saddle via Maselnik. Then up to Maselnik and down back to planina Leskovec. From the planina to the car we carried the skis again

Nice. I didn't know that Batognica is suitable for skiing.

Do you know what the path to Batognica past the lake in Lužnica is like? I assume it should be dry.

You can only assume, but I'm sure there's still some snow. When we were there 10 days ago everything was still completely snow-covered up to below Rdeči rob, surely quite a bit has melted but even then it was no obstacle, more joy and cooling.

From the lake to Batognica there's still quite a bit of snow, ice axe might be recommended. From Krn to Batognica except for one snow patch (not problematic) the path is dry.

Hello everyone, Could someone please tell me what the path on the northern slope of Batognica is like, going from Krn Notch to Prag Saddle? So far I've always gone via the stepped path over the summit of Batognica and I'm curious about this other path. Unfortunately I can't find any descriptions or photos of this path anywhere. Is this path easy and not exposed? I'd also appreciate some photos from this path if anyone has them maybe Thanks for the help

The path is mainly without ups and downs, except for a small ascent to Prag saddle at the end. In dry conditions it's completely non-exposed, even though I've crossed there many times I don't have photos.
