Description of mountain:
Matkova kopa is a difficult-to-access mountain in the ridge of the Kamnik Savinja Alps between the Matkov kot and Belska Kočna valleys. The ridge runs north-south and forms the border with neighboring Austria. To the north, it begins with the lowest Pavličev vrh (1339 m), followed by Pavličeve stene (1653 m), Lesnikovo sedlo (1517 m), Jerebičje (1761 m), Matkovo sedlo (1623 m), Matkov Grintovec (1700 m), Jevševec (1730 m), Matkova kopa (1957 m), Krničko sedlo (1803 m), Krnička gora (2061 m), and Mrzla gora (2203 m). Crossing this ridge is very beautiful but also very demanding. The only peak with marked paths is Mrzla gora; all others are reachable via unmarked shepherd-hunting paths and pathless terrain.
Paths to Matkova kopa lead from Matkov kot, from the farms Kočnar, Matk, and Perk, from Pavličev vrh, and from Belska Kočna. The ascent to the summit itself follows a very demanding pathless route. The easiest access is from Matkova krnica above Matkov kot.
The approach from all directions is very challenging technically, orientationally, and in terms of fitness. Therefore, the mountain is suitable only for experienced mountaineers with appropriate equipment.
The locals in these parts are very hospitable. From conversations with them, it is clear that they want this corner to remain as secluded in the future as it has been in the past.
