Access to starting point:
First, we drive to Kranjska Gora, then continue driving towards Rateče. When we arrive at Podkoren, we leave the main road and continue driving right towards Korensko sedlo. From the saddle, we descend to the Austrian side, where in the valley we turn right towards Beljak / Villach. Further, we drive through the village Ločilo / Hart to Beljak, where signs for Spittal direct us to the bypass road past the town. The road then soon brings us to Judendorf (area of Beljak), and only a little further we notice signs for Beljak alpine road / Villacher Alpenstrasse. Here we turn right and we follow the road to a parking lot, which is located at an altitude of 1732 m (road is payable 14 EUR personal car and 8 EUR motorbike, July 2012).
From Korensko sedlo to the top of Beljak road is approximately 32 km.
Route description:
From the parking lot, we continue on the road closed to traffic. The road, which is groomed in the winter time, at first barely ascends over grassy slopes. After a few minutes of walking, the road starts ascending on a moderately steep slope. The road then turns right and passes onto the panoramic north slopes of the mountain. The road then crosses a smaller hollow and then ascends on the northern slopes of Zwolfernock. On the top of this moderate ascent we will notice a bench and a table by the path. Further, the road slightly descends for a few minutes and then brings us below the main peak of Dobrač. The road then ascends towards the tower, which we have already seen for some time, and right after it brings us to the mountain hut.
From the hut to the top we have only three minutes of walking. The last meters below the summit are in the winter time dangerous for slipping.

Discussion about the trip Rosstratte - Dobratsch / Dobrač (by road)

On 19.01.10 I was on Dobrač, the path along Alpenstrasse from Beljak drags a bit (15 km and over 1200m elevation!!!). The path drags somewhat, but is rewarded with a nice view at the top. Only dangerous is the path at the top, namely a few meters along the ridge towards the Slovenian church, the path is only a few 10 cm wide, so you really have to be careful, because a slip would be really fatal. In summer it's also suitable for a family outing. I mainly met ski tourers, also some snowboarders and snowshoers and of course walkers of all ages.

Is the Ludwig Walter Hütte hut open?

If I look at the upper picture, I see that the doors of the hut are open and hikers are entering and exiting through them.

Kopron, I also noticed that, but the picture was taken last winter, I'm interested in this year's, because they were supposed to have some renovation works. So I kindly ask that if anyone has been walking around Dobrač these days, to provide info on the current status of the hut. LP

I think the hut will be open this summer. That's what the Austrian mountaineers said.

colleague was up there three weeks ago and they weren't collecting toll... she says they only do it in the summer season

Usually on these mountain roads they don't collect toll (there's no one in the huts designated for that) but the practice is to pay at the hut and get a receipt there. That's my experience (Obir, Košutnik..) LP

Toll fees (13 EUR) are collected on Dobratsch only in summer. lp

On their website www.villacher-alpenstrasse.at in the Map & Route calculator section, Slovenia cannot be selected , but they have e.g. Sweden. Obviously, for them the world ends at the southern border.

Nice easy marked path numbered 296, which crosses the forest road only a few times below, leads to the summit from the west. Starting point is above Čajna north of Bistrica na Zilji. Slovenian hiking maps do not cover this area. For now you can use the Atlas of Slovenia (pages 25 and 26), and below is a link to the Austrian map where zooming in shows the marked paths. http://www.austrianmap.at/amap/index.php?SKN=1&XPX=637&YPX=492

Hello! On Sunday we are heading to Dobrač. I think the hut is open, because the participants had to register with the trip leader, they will prepare a late lunch for us in the hut. The ascent to the summit is planned via two paths. The first group will take the longer path approx. 3 hours, the second will drive the panoramic road and need approx. 1 hour to approach the summit. I've never been to Dobrač and I don't know any of the planned paths. Next week I'll try to provide details. Until then best regards to all and have a nice weekend.

Is the road cleared and free in winter?

The road was excellently plowed on Sunday, on the way back they even sprinkled it well with sand, no toll. The hut was open, mostly ski tourers go up. Slovenian, German church, the last meters to the cross are exposed.

Is only the Alpine road toll-paying or do I also need an Austrian vignette for driving on the Spittal bypass?

Dobratsch, after more than ten years. Family outing, the kids were sledding while I walked to the top. Foggy and windy at the end of last year. The road is nice, just watch out for skiers and sledders.. Trail for big and small ones, and also furry little ones.. https://jelenkamenmajdag.blogspot.com/2023/01/dobrac.html

19.03.23. Kuhriegel, which has taken the name Dobrač or Dobratsch in German. At the top stands a cross, just a few meters below it a Slovenian church. Dobrač has two almost equally high peaks, which are only about 30m apart. On the eastern of these two peaks is the highest church in Europe. Just a few tens of meters below both peaks is the mountain hut (Ludvig - Walter Hutte) near which stands a 160m high TV tower, visible from afar. We didn't go on the marked path because it was too muddy, but on the road which was hardened, smoothed and frozen in the morning, so crampons were useful. Quite a lot of hikers, especially ski tourers. Weather pleasant for walking, a bit cloudy in the morning which cleared up and the sun warmed us on the descent. The Beljaška mountain road is supposed to be toll, but at the entrance, barrier and hut, which was wrapped in transparent foil (protected from weather phenomena), there was no toll collector this time. Nice easy tour with wonderful views.

Does anyone know if they've already stopped collecting tolls on the Alpine road for this year? And is the hut open every day during the winter season too?

Gorazd, thanks for the info. I didn't notice that on their websites, maybe I read superficially, but it can come in very handy, especially in winter, for ski touring and hourly
