Access to starting point:
First we drive to Škofja Loka, then we continue driving towards Železniki. In Železniki we come to an intersection, where the road towards Kropa branches off to the right. Here we continue straight ahead and follow the main road for only about 100 m, then the signs for Prtovč direct us to the right onto an ascending road, which we follow to a large parking lot near the church in the mentioned village.
Route description:
From the parking lot we walk past the church and NOB monument to the beginning of the village, where we arrive at a well-marked junction. We continue left in the direction of Ratitovec over Po(v)den (slightly to the right: Ratitovec over Razor) along the road, which first ascends past houses then turns left and slightly descends. The road then changes into a wide cart track that starts moderately ascending through the forest.
After approximately half an hour of walking we step onto the saddle Po(v)den, where there is also a well-marked junction. On the saddle we continue right in the direction of Ratitovec along an initially level path that ascends through a belt of raspberry bushes, then enters the forest where it starts to ascend more steeply. Higher up the path levels out and leads us to a poor forest road, which we follow for only a few dozen meters, then the markers direct us right onto an increasingly steep footpath. The path soon exits the forest and leads us to steep grassy slopes (in snow great risk of slipping and avalanche), along which we ascend to the right. Higher the path past rocky pillars leads us to the main ridge, where it turns sharply left and levels out completely. There follows an easy and pleasant path along which, in 10 minutes of further walking along an increasingly panoramic slope, we ascend to the Krek Hut on Ratitovcu.

The trip can be extended to the following destinations: Gladki vrh (Ratitovec) ( 5 min), Altemaver (Ratitovec)
We recommend: trips from the same starting point, similar trips, panorama, summit register

Discussion about the trip Prtovč - Krekova koča na Ratitovcu (via Po(v)den)

Really nice tour. Most of the trail goes through the forest, so it's not too hot in summer. This trail via Povden is better and easier than via Razor. Suitable for all ages.
Gost3. 09. 2007
I agree with the previous one.
Very nice path, which I happily hike multiple times.
Gost3. 09. 2007
Try once hiking from Soriska planina along the ridge to Ratitovec. Beautiful path. Good luck!

Great trip. Snow along the path as a sample, at the top a real winter idyll reigns. The path is well trodden. I recommend crampons or microspikes for the descent.
N&G21. 01. 2008
We often choose this trip because it's really fairy-tale like. Yesterday we went up via Razor (usually we go via Povden). At the beginning quite some mud, further on microspikes really aren't superfluous, but it's possible to get up without them too (I didn't have them). We went down via Povden and it's much less muddy.
Up top: I'd stay on that sparkling snow basking in the sunshine. cool

Today I went to Ratitovec from Prtovč. Up via Povden, down via Razor. The path was well trodden so I didn't even put on crampons. At the top winter fairy tale and crowd of people. Weather ideal, temperatures low. In Krekova hut excellent jota and delicious flancati. In short, fantastic trip also for less fit. I recommend!

Yesterday I climbed to Ratitovec from Zalega Log. The path to Povden is very nice, just steep. To the top about 2.5 hours.
I met only two hikers. Nice tour.

starting point - "Jesenovec"
a few km past Železniki there is a sign for Ratitovec by the road, turn right over the little bridge and right after there is some small parking space, the path starts right behind the first house, after a few steps uphill... NOTE!!! the path is quite bad (probably from the flood) but still quite well marked - mandatory equipment - good hiking boots, poles, and possibly helmet; not suitable for children ... jesenovec-ratitovec 2.45 hours
Fazo14. 03. 2009
Today my girlfriend and I went up the calf path and I have to say, I'm really glad there was wind keeping the base firm. In the upper part there's quite a big avalanche danger. Ice axe and crampons are mandatory. Otherwise it was fun with more skiers than on Krvavec velik nasmeh

Best, Matevž

The path via Povden is nice and dry these days, unlike the one via Razor (snow and mud in places). At Krekova koča excellent food and quick service!
baxi29. 08. 2011
The path via Poden is much more scenic and sunny!
GregorC10. 03. 2012
The path via Poden is snow-free, while via Razor it is quite icy.
ciklama27. 04. 2012
Well today the hot days suitable for hiking in the mountains have begun. Today the path to Ratitovec was very crowded. Only here and there is still a patch of snow, otherwise everything is snow-free.

zabava12. 10. 2014
Yesterday I was with my daughter on Ratitovec. It was cloudy, cold, windy and unfortunately no views. But the welcome at the hut was warm, especially the flancati. They are excellent. We'll meet again on this trail.
Mira.k31. 10. 2015
Today with husband and daughter to Ratitovec. Weather wonderful but it was windy today too. I recommend the circular path, up via Povden, down via Razor.
lauratr18. 02. 2016
Hello. I'm interested in the conditions for Ratitovec via Povden.. going on Sunday, wondering if crampons are needed? Lp
zokica18. 02. 2016
We will plow it.
GregorC18. 02. 2016
I would recommend the path via Razor, which is safer in the snow.
lauratr18. 02. 2016
Thanks.. I'll take the advice and go via Razor.. lp.
viharnik19. 02. 2016
The variant via Razor is safer, but even there avalanches often come from the left near the top below Razor.
Salewa19. 02. 2016
Is it safe at this time to go to Ratitovec due to avalanches?
viharnik19. 02. 2016
Is it safe to walk to Mercator because of cars on the road? = same answer for the mountains.
Read a book about moving in the mountains in winter, follow the weather, temperatures, wind directions, humidity, sun, number of cold clear nights, snowpack profiles in the mountains, observations of snow behavior on steep terrain, snow sounds underfoot, skis, knowledge of micro-locations of avalanches on the chosen tour.
Daaam21. 02. 2016
#Salewa ..in principle it's safe, but 100% safety never exists.. In winter, the right variant (via Razor) is mostly taken. Viharnik, although trying to be very well-intentioned smart, still exaggerates a bit with advice.

Hiked yesterday, circular route from Prtovč - up via Razor and down via Povden. Both paths very beautiful, well-maintained and nicely marked. Via Povden is indeed more scenic, great for descent to enjoy the views. Nice to detour to Gladki vrh (5 min from the hut), from both peaks wonderful views in fine weather practically on all our mountains. Prtovč has a fairly large and well-kept parking lot, fee 2€ for whole day, paid by SMS or app (that pink thing common now at pay stations - EasyPay or EasyPark or similar). Great food at the hut, quite crowded nasmeh but they deserve the best hut title in my opinion.
