Mače - Dom na Kališču (by road)

Access to starting point:
A) From the highway Ljubljana - Jesenice we go to the exit Kranj - east, and then we continue driving in the direction of Jezersko. When we get to Preddvor we leave the main road and we continue driving left towards the center of the mentioned settlement, from there we follow the signs for Mače. When we get to Mače, at the marked crossroads we continue right (left Bašelj, straight church of St. Miklavž (church isn't accessible with a car)) and on a narrow road we drive above the village, where there is a larger marked parking lot.
B) From the highway Jesenice - Ljubljana we go to the exit Kranj - west and at the first crossroads we continue left. Further, we drive through the underpass below the highway, and then we get to a roundabout, from where we continue driving in the direction of Golnik. The path ahead leads us through the settlement Mlaka pri Kranju, and at the end of the settlement, we continue right in the direction of the settlement Srakovlje. Next follows driving through Srakovlje, Spodnja Bela, Srednja Bela to Zgornja Bela, where we continue right towards Preddvor. In Preddvor we notice signs for Mače, which point us to the left past the primary school on a road which ascends to Mače. When we get to Mače, at the marked crossroads we continue right (left Bašelj, straight church of St. Miklavž (church isn't accessible with a car)) and on a narrow road we drive above the village, where there is a larger marked parking lot.

Route description:
From the parking lot, we return to the road from which we turned onto the parking lot and we continue the ascent in the direction of Kališče. At first, we walk through the forest, the road a few minutes higher gets closer to the stream Suha, which we also cross twice a little further. After approximately 20 minutes we get to a marked junction, where the normal path towards Kališče continues left, and we continue right in the direction of Srednji vrh, Kališče over Kozjek and Zavetišče v Hudičevem borštu over Kozjek. The worse road a little ahead brings us to a cargo cableway, which runs towards the mountain hut Dom na Kališču, and we at the first junction after the cargo cableway continue on the left unmarked cart track (right Srednji vrh and Kališče over Kozjek). We continue on the cart track or wide track, which at the junctions we follow on the "main" cart track. In moderate ascent in a few minutes we reach the wild garlic growth and a strip of sparse forest, from where some views open up. Next follows a short diagonal ascent and we join the normal path from Mače.
We reach the marked path on a smaller saddle north of Gora (994 m), and we follow it in the direction of Kališče. For a few minutes we ascend through a dense spruce forest and then we join a worse road, on which for a few minutes we continue the ascent. We leave the road when on the right side we notice the continuation of the mountain path (the junction is well marked). The path ahead passes onto a steeper slope and in numerous zigzags ascends relatively steeply. Higher the forest temporarily thins and a nice view opens up towards the south. On the section of sparse forest a wooden bench offers a pleasant rest, and a little ahead "surprises" us a working clock on a tree. Further we cross towards the right for a somewhat longer time, so that we reach the forested south ridge of Kališče. On the mentioned ridge the path turns sharply left and then in a few zigzags ascends to Spodnje Kališče, from where a beautiful view opens up on Storžič.
When above Spodnje Kališče the path returns into the forest, the path from Laško (also the path from Bašelj past the Košuta hospital) joins us from the left. Next follows a few minutes of walking through the forest and we get to a nice viewpoint, from where a nice view opens up towards the nearby mountain hut Dom na Kališču, Mali Grintavec, the ridge of Lanež, Krvavec... From the viewpoint only a short ascent follows and we are already at the mountain hut Dom na Kališču.
