Access to starting point:
From Bovec, we drive towards Trenta or vice versa, but only to the village Kal-Koritnica, which is the starting point for our tour. By the road, we will notice signposts for Svinjak, and we park on one of the smaller parking lots (don't park in the courtyard).
Route description:
From the starting point, we head onto the road (direction Svinjak), which ascends through the village. Already after a few minutes of walking, we turn right onto a footpath which quickly leads us into the forest. Further, we ascend moderately, occasionally steeply through the forest, and the path brings us higher to a ridge, from which it then quickly turns to the southern slopes. The path then ascends along the ridge increasingly steeply upwards.
When we have walked almost 2 hours, we will notice traces of a fire, which raged here years ago. The path then ascends even steeper and leads us along a slightly exposed slope, which is mainly when wet very dangerous for slipping. Further, the increasingly panoramic path in a few additional minutes of walking along the upper slope of the mountain brings us to panoramic Svinjak.
Because of the substantial steepness in the last part, more caution is needed to avoid slipping.

On Wednesday, 1.8.2012, during my vacation wanderings I also visited Svinjak. The ascent took me 2.5h.

The path goes through the forest for a good two hours. Already after fifteen minutes, a smaller path branches off to the left from the main path, which after a five-minute ascent leads to the open-air museum Čelo, which I also viewed.
The path to Svinjak mostly ascends steeply, but the main steep section is about half an hour before the summit, where most of the path follows a narrow ridge, which is somewhat exposed in places, so extra caution is needed on this section.

At the summit, a small Aljažev stolp and a stamp await us, but I recommend bringing your own ink pad for the stamp.

Pictures from the hike can be viewed on the website of Planinsko društvo Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20120801-svinjak/foto/19914051

Does anyone have insight into this trail: is there still any snow, is the trail passable (due to consequences of ice damage)?
ljubitelj gora8. 05. 2014
This is how Svinjak looks from below Rombon. http://shrani.si/f/42/mZ/7ILXAzW/img4403.jpg

The trail was completely normally passable on May 1, 2014.

I confirm the above comment - path is great. Go for it!

@jax, what's with the cynical end of the comment?mrk pogled

The path is nicely routed through the forest, so almost to the top there are no issues with sun exposure. During our visit (mid-June) it was just the season for wild strawberries, which we gorged on somewhere in the second third of the path like never beforejezik. After reading the comments I expected steeper terrain, but up to the last section of the path it's not that bad or at least it didn't seem particularly steep to me. The summit section is slightly exposed but manageable (I have some issues with exposure myself but managed without problems) and requires hand use in a couple of places, but really tricky is just one slightly higher rock slab where the holds/footholds are a bit too far apart for us girls. Slightly fiddly on descent but no panic either. Summit spacious, views phenomenal. Absolutely recommend!

Hello.
Curious what the path to Svinjak is like. I've never been there.
Thanks.
jax21. 06. 2016
OK. Below almost a cart track, fairly level and slightly monotonous, above steeper and open, at some spots need to use hands a bit. But nothing demanding, and nice views. Only afraid you've missed the best time for ascent. Now it will be hooooo t ...
keti122. 06. 2016
I'd rate it as quite steep in the larger part and in the upper part, when you exit the forest, locally somewhat exposed, depending, of course, on one's experience in more demanding terrain. And watch out for snakes! Once in the upper part, where you grab rocks, I almost grabbed oneeek
otherwise a beautiful tour with nice views. Best regards

Hello!

In September I'm going on vacation to Bovec and I'm interested, given that I'm afraid of heights or get dizzy on exposed sections and chimneys, and that I always choose only hills where there is an easy marked path up, whether Svinjak is a suitable hill for me or not? I like hills like Matajur, Kobariški stol and Krasji vrh, just for comparison. And I'm also interested in Rombon besides Svinjak? Finally, if you think these two hills are not suitable for me, please write me some other hill in the area where there is an easy marked path up?
Enka16. 08. 2017
This fear of heights is very subjective, so it's hard to advise, everyone has a bit differentnasmeh. I have some too, but I got to Svinjak without problems. It tried to scare me a bit on the section shown in picture 8, but it wasn't bad. One or two rocky steps where you need to use hands a bit, but they are not exposed.
miri16. 08. 2017
Leaf through the literature on Krn Mountains or mountains above Planina Razor. Nearby are Skutnik or Zajavor. Bela peč just behind the border. And Bavha with the same starting point. Save Rombon for when you have (I assume) a bit more "mileage".
Good luck

great path but once snow falls it's only for experts... first time it's very dangerous and I wouldn't recommend anyone going alone... only in pairs or more people.... otherwise super
borle21. 11. 2017
Gogi77777777 why not first time alone???when you get out of the forest there's a bit of rock.if you can't handle that better stay home.snow wasn't bothering at all.views in dark version.enjoyed it me and the little dog
haridautovic18. 01. 2018
We were at the summit on Saturday 13.1.2018,, very nice, wonderful.. on descent crampons obligatory, otherwise very hard to get down.. last 100m,, otherwise all OK,,

Today my wife and I were on Svinjak. Beautiful, well-marked tour, for which it seems almost unbelievable to me that this mountain is only 1,653 m high. In terms of difficulty, I could easily compare it to many two-thousanders without hesitation.
I recommend this tour to everyone who will be around Bovec.

And an appeal to the Bovec people. In my opinion, they could install fixed cables at some of the most exposed spots just below the summit.
dprapr19. 08. 2018
I haven't been up there yet, but every time I drive past below, its name hurts.
Who on earth thought of naming it that way. Such a prominent hill, almost a symbol of Bovec, and Svinjak!? Maybe someone who had "piggy" little stamina for its approach named it that?zmeden

When there's a beautiful alternative name somewhere, Svitnjak. The late Igor mentioned somewhere that it's because it starts to dawn behind it in the morning. Ever since I go to Bovec, I don't call it anything else. For me it's Svitnjak!
ales5020. 08. 2018
The summit itself is nothing special, except for a bit of ascent at the end below the top, but there's the chance to see golden eagles in flight, and the views, nasmeh
margu5020. 08. 2018
Dr. Anton Jeglič told me that it should actually be called Svitnjak, but the recorder understood it differently, and from that Svinjak arose. Svitnjak certainly suits it much better; I've already noticed the sun rising just behind it, illuminating the Bovec basin!
dprapr20. 08. 2018
And couldn't anyone correct this "recorder"?:

What surprises me more is that people from Bovec are so tolerant of this name and it doesn't bother them. Maybe they even "market" it more with this name. Who knows?

dprapr20. 08. 2018
Yes, even on old maps it was still called Sovinjak (map Zahodni Julijci, 1973). Now it's only Svinjak. But both names are certainly surpassed by Svitnjak.
It would be interesting to ask older locals what they think of these names.
margu5020. 08. 2018
They also renamed Blegaš to Blegoš claiming it sounds too Rovtar-like. Tavčar calls it Blegaš in his sketches. Locals, especially older ones, still call it that. Name recorders were of course not skilled at hearing the locals' dialect pronunciation, so such cases arose. Surely these two are not the only ones.
ana21. 08. 2018
There's a sea of them, quickly from memory:

Prisojnik - Prisank
Kalški greben - Greben
Krajcarica - Zadnjica (stream)
Mangrt - Mangart
Stegovnik - Štegovnik
Velo polje - Belo polje
Tosc - Tolstec

darinka45. 10. 2019
Today to Svinjak. The weather held up. As an interesting fact, they installed fixed cables towards the summit, making it much easier to go. A few of us made it. We saw a snake in the grass below the summit, which retreated into a hole. It wasn't in a hurry.
ales506. 10. 2019
Yeah, Svinjak has nice views, and as if it's all forest there apparently.
SuperHribolazka26. 05. 2020
Nice trail, but it's winding all the time, offers nice views though. At the top, near the reduced Aljaž Tower, glasses with diopters were left, in case someone is looking for them.
anazala23. 06. 2020
yes, it's true. svitnjak. sovinjak are old names. personally I like them better. svinjak is also ok, because it's really a hill, heavy like a pig. haha. well, quite demanding. velik
names change. from Jožica to Pepco or vice versa.
sivina22. 12. 2020
Another confirmation that this peak was really called Svitnjak, which makes me happy! This claim was given to us by an old local from Bovec in a chance conversation with him about 10 years ago during our tourist stay in that area. He himself didn't know why it's now officially called Svinjak, which he naturally didn't like. Also the late author of the Julian Alps guide Mr. Tine Mihelič wondered where such an unusual name for this peak came from. Also for Prisank in the second half of the last century they re-established this local name instead of just: Prisojnik; for a change only initiative is needed!
Dr.ejči22. 12. 2020
Thanks...interesting!...one really always learns something new mežikanje
anazala2. 06. 2021 10:10:35
Interested in the summit of that mountain. I mean the final ascent. Is it really that dangerous. Are there perhaps any ropes. Pegs. Is it secured or nothing at all.
keti12. 06. 2021 13:30:56
There are no safety features anywhere, at least a few years ago there weren't. You help yourself with hands to grip the rocks. Moderately exposed. For someone used to somewhat exposed trails, no problem. For the inexperienced it can be unpleasant, especially downhill since you return the same way. And watch out for snakes that like to sunbathe on those rocks.
jax2. 06. 2021 15:03:55
I think I saw somewhere that they actually put a couple of pegs on the summit part. When I was up there, they weren't yet. Otherwise, no, not that bad. Steep and need to be careful, say not for children, but perfectly doable.
bbugari13. 06. 2021 00:59:02
On the summit part, where the forest ends, there are a few meters of steel cables, not for safety, but for help on ascent!
anazala14. 06. 2021 15:45:12
oh, great. thanks for the info. I'd like to visit this mountain, but I was scared because some describe the end, the summit, as very scary.
miri14. 06. 2021 15:51:58
If it's of any help to you.
The last part of the path is similar to the final ascent to Črna prst from the Rodice direction.
anazala14. 06. 2021 16:44:24
I know it. It would go with careful steps, slowly. Thanks. Next week. I'll let you know what I write about this mountain, probably nice view. I can already feel how nice it will be.
lubadar14. 06. 2021 21:14:46
Watch out for snakes, there are plenty of them there
CarpeDiem24720. 11. 2021 19:59:24
Today conquered Svitnjak, ideal conditions, almost too warm, just watch out for slippery leaves on the ground, which are really treacherous.

On the way, a domesticated goat joined us and accompanied us to the top.

Apparently this goat is a hill wanderer, apparently going up to the top with hikers every day. nasmeh
anazala22. 12. 2022 20:23:06
I want to go to Svitnjak. Some say the upper part is dangerous. Any comparison with another peak or hill? Maybe no courage and not go to the top. That's an option too. Everyone wants to reach the summit anyway.
miri22. 12. 2022 22:10:42
For example, Goličica from Mlinarce. Quite steep grass, indistinct trail, no or minimal protections. Quite steep drops on both sides...
Even right below the desired peak nice views, so decide yourself. In the dry, of course. Sometimes turn back before the goal. I see no tragedy in that. Next time, I say.
jax23. 12. 2022 07:54:49
Don't mess around. To Svinjak is a perfectly nice path. The other one I'd rather not comment on.
bongo23. 12. 2022 09:48:23
Path to Svinjak in summit part similar to Grmada via Westrova, except no trees and more open. In wet a bit more slippery due to steepness and sliding, to roll towards Soča would need extreme conditions (or escape from goat smile
mirank23. 12. 2022 09:52:08
You're asking the same things for the second time: make up your mind and go, you won't regret it. Jax is right, they say they've even secured some parts just below the summit, although I don't see a great need for that.
darinka423. 12. 2022 13:13:55
From what I've seen, it's a visited peak. Maks and I were up there this year. The path is nicely laid out and in the somewhat steep part, the cables are helpful. When it's wet, it slips on all paths anyway. I'd say, compared to it, Goličica is more demanding. Especially because it's a pathless peak. Especially the first time. Then you already know where and how.
MinasTirith24. 08. 2025 19:15:26
Was at the summit today, ascent took 1h50min, total time 3h30min. Path was somewhat slippery due to rains in previous days. At the top I fought with goats that immediately ran to me when they heard/smelled me opening something to eat nasmeh Left without snacks velik
Nehodimvhribe25. 08. 2025 10:52:37
Also visited Slovenian Matterhorn yesterday, have a question:
Sign says 1637m, everywhere (mapzs, hribi.net) summit height 1653m. Thanks for info.

On path torn peg holding cable, nothing special.

Those 2 goats (mom with kid) were around 10am still halfway velik

Otherwise nice path, recommend turning soon from start directly to Čelo - open-air museum (left steeply at first directional sign), as "lower" path uninteresting. Unmarked, trodden and easy to follow.
gamsek126. 08. 2025 15:45:02
1637 m is definitely a mistake, perhaps still from Tuma's times, when he recorded this altitude in the book Imenoslovje Julijskih Alp, if I'm not mistaken. God knows why this altitude ended up on the stamp.

The exact altitude according to lidar is actually 1652 m. mežikanje
