Access to starting point:
From Bovec, we drive towards Trenta or vice versa, but only to the village Kal-Koritnica, which is the starting point for our tour. By the road, we will notice signposts for Svinjak, and we park on one of the smaller parking lots (don't park in the courtyard).
Route description:
From the starting point, we head onto the road (direction Svinjak), which ascends through the village. Already after a few minutes of walking, we turn right onto a footpath which quickly leads us into the forest. Further, we ascend moderately, occasionally steeply through the forest, and the path brings us higher to a ridge, from which it then quickly turns to the southern slopes. The path then ascends along the ridge increasingly steeply upwards.
When we have walked almost 2 hours, we will notice traces of a fire, which raged here years ago. The path then ascends even steeper and leads us along a slightly exposed slope, which is mainly when wet very dangerous for slipping. Further, the increasingly panoramic path in a few additional minutes of walking along the upper slope of the mountain brings us to panoramic Svinjak.
Because of the substantial steepness in the last part, more caution is needed to avoid slipping.

It doesn't look demanding, but it is! It drags on a lot and there's not much space for rest because we're accompanied by constant steepness. At the beginning, you can easily get lost, so you have to be a bit of a pathfinder too. The summit is phenomenal! I recommend the trip to Svinjak to all true mountaineers and enthusiasts of Bovec!

Robewrt, is it really such a knee-gripper? According to some info, apparently you don't place your foot to the top, but just scramble and scramble???? From the photos, it looks very nice up there. Thanks for the answer.

You've caught yourself in your own trap, Robert. Jalovec is no harder than ŠG, Svinjak very demanding, Mangartsko sedlo crisis... You can see you're not an expert or real mountaineer.

From the comments I have no real idea, - is Svinjak suitable for an average hiker or not.. - is it more or less demanding than Begunjščica... - the view must be unique..

The last part of the path is very steep. In damp and snowy conditions, there is a risk of slipping. Otherwise, it is a fairly steep path with no major orientation issues.

Today after many years I went to Svinjak. The path from Koritnica itself to the top is sufficiently marked and well-trodden. I met many hikers. That's good proof that it's worth going UP. In weather like today you're rewarded with a magnificent view. WATCH for rockfall below the summit. Since there's still snow higher in the mountains, it's an ideal tour for spring days.

I have been to Svinjak twice. The trail is really demanding, but worth all the effort. On the way to the summit from the trailhead (30 minutes walk) there is an open-air museum - Čelo-. Also worth seeing.

Nice steep hill. Due to the forest, recommended even in summer. The last 15' is definitely a demanding path - there are several spots where we have to climb over rocky jumps - some protection would be useful in wet conditions. At least A-category guides can lead up there hihi.

| Nickster23. 07. 2008 |
Yeah, you're right. The mountain looks easy, but in the end you have to climb a bit too. I agree that some protections for slips and such would be good. And it would be easier to go up. Otherwise, a nice mountain that already somewhat resembles high alpine terrain Aha, and one more question. Does anyone know what access to this mountain is like in winter? Do you have to watch for avalanches in the summit area? Thanks for the answer and best regards to all hikers!

Nice path suitable for children, but don't recommend in sunny weather as you sweat profusely. Recently with kids, very hot, flies nearly ate us at top. Great view of Bovec from summit.

The winter approach is exactly the same as the summer one, there are no avalanches, of course you need to take care for a few days after snowfall, the last part is really quite steep, but nothing special, well it's not entirely easy for children, otherwise there are nice views of the surrounding mountains, Bovec itself doesn't attract any special views, more the entire valley.

On Wednesday 21.7. my friend and I set off towards Svinjak. Despite high temperatures and a fairly late start (around 10:30), there was no excessive panic, as you walk in pleasant shade up to 3/4 of the way - of course, you need to take enough water. The view rewards all the effort, from the top you watch gliders racing below and above you... it is true that the last part of the path is somewhat exposed and some wire rope (especially in the 2 gullies) really wouldn't be superfluous!!! Otherwise, a really nice trip, also recommended for building fitness!

Yesterday's original plan was Rombon. But since the chairlift to Kanin doesn't operate during the week , and the Kluže path in both directions didn't appeal to us (I wanted to see more things, remnants from WWI ) we rather chose Svinjak. He hasn't "processed" it yet, but that end of Slo tempted us . Weather ideal anyway, not too hot . The problem is that the path drags on quite a bit, especially on the way back when knees start to hurt a little . It's nice, as some before me wrote, that the path mostly runs through the forest, which provides shade, so in summer you don't feel the heat as much . Only the last half hour we were exposed to the sun. That part is quite exposed, true, maybe it's worth considering installing some protections (two chimneys) . At the top a miniature Aljaž Tower awaits us , installed there in 2005. There's a stamp, but no summit book - pity . The views definitely enchant - Kanin, Rombon, Bovški Grintavec, somewhere partially in the background the majestic Jalovec . For heart and soul also the view of the emerald river, which has very low water level these days , and on beautiful Bovec with surroundings . In short, again I was on a summit not in SPP. Really, I had a great time, the view enchanted me the most . Recommended.

Chairlift ... , but you don't want to go from Kluž and then to Bovec, there you have quite a bit to envy.

|
|
|
| katty28. 09. 2011 |
Yes, I'm also rooting for that variant ! My first plan was from Kluž up, then to Rombon, Čuklo and to Kanin and down by chairlift . But the problem is that the cable car doesn't run that late anymore, and we also have no transport back to Kluž, unless Katarina hitches to the fortress . Now I'm wondering, can I go directly from Čukla down to Bovec and avoid Kanin? And the path drags a lot and is arduous, but could it be done? Or how did you imagine "back to Bovec"? Tnx, Katy

Today my wife and I were up on Svinjak. Wonderful mountain trip in beautiful autumn sun. At around 10°C it's not strenuous, although the path ascends steadily on average - as befits a mountain. The last very steep section right below the summit is definitely demanding and requires utmost caution, as it's on crumbly terrain with lots of scree. Given today's "heavy traffic", a chain would be most welcome. Without scrambling on all fours it won't go on some sections, as there are no cables or pegs. More awkward on descent. This part definitely not for vertigo sufferers. No summit book anymore, for the stamp you need ink from your backpack. Mountain worth a visit.

After my first visit to Krn, I'm really enthusiastic about the Bovški vrhovi , so today we decided to visit Svinjak. The path through the forest offers a real autumn atmosphere, as the leaves on the trees glow golden in the sun. Despite the path steeply ascending all the time we manage it without problems. Mostly it's dry, only in some shady sections it's wet and quite slippery. The path over the ridge requires quite a bit of caution, some scrambling is necessary, the terrain is crumbly. Just before the summit the path gets quite steep, but once you overcome that too and step onto the beautiful summit, you know every step was worth the effort. The summit offers magnificent views of Kanin, over Rombon to the valley to the remains of the Kluže fortress and the view already carries you across the entire Loški greben and over Krn to the today completely copper-colored Matajur. In the valley the emerald Soča. You really don't know whether to breathe or enjoy . The mini Aljažev stolp with the logbook and stamp also delights me at the summit. The sunlit summit pinned us down and we really indulged in that true pleasure - sitting silently and just enjoying . The mountain Svinjak is really worth a visit. We ended the day with Bovški štruklji, which I can say is a real sin if you don't try them.

On Saturday at Svinjak. Summer heat at the end of winter, only on top it was windy. Practically no snow, but along the path plenty of "slippery" leaves. In the mini Aljažev stolp everything is there: stamp, ink pad, ink and book. Commendable.

On Wednesday, 1.8.2012, during my vacation wanderings I also visited Svinjak. The ascent took me 2.5h. The path goes through the forest for a good two hours. Already after fifteen minutes, a smaller path branches off to the left from the main path, which after a five-minute ascent leads to the open-air museum Čelo, which I also viewed. The path to Svinjak mostly ascends steeply, but the main steep section is about half an hour before the summit, where most of the path follows a narrow ridge, which is somewhat exposed in places, so extra caution is needed on this section. At the summit, a small Aljažev stolp and a stamp await us, but I recommend bringing your own ink pad for the stamp. Pictures from the hike can be viewed on the website of Planinsko društvo Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20120801-svinjak/foto/19914051

The path is nicely routed through the forest, so almost to the top there are no issues with sun exposure. During our visit (mid-June) it was just the season for wild strawberries, which we gorged on somewhere in the second third of the path like never before . After reading the comments I expected steeper terrain, but up to the last section of the path it's not that bad or at least it didn't seem particularly steep to me. The summit section is slightly exposed but manageable (I have some issues with exposure myself but managed without problems) and requires hand use in a couple of places, but really tricky is just one slightly higher rock slab where the holds/footholds are a bit too far apart for us girls. Slightly fiddly on descent but no panic either. Summit spacious, views phenomenal. Absolutely recommend!

OK. Below almost a cart track, fairly level and slightly monotonous, above steeper and open, at some spots need to use hands a bit. But nothing demanding, and nice views. Only afraid you've missed the best time for ascent. Now it will be hooooo t ...

|
|
| keti122. 06. 2016 |
I'd rate it as quite steep in the larger part and in the upper part, when you exit the forest, locally somewhat exposed, depending, of course, on one's experience in more demanding terrain. And watch out for snakes! Once in the upper part, where you grab rocks, I almost grabbed one otherwise a beautiful tour with nice views. Best regards

Hello! In September I'm going on vacation to Bovec and I'm interested, given that I'm afraid of heights or get dizzy on exposed sections and chimneys, and that I always choose only hills where there is an easy marked path up, whether Svinjak is a suitable hill for me or not? I like hills like Matajur, Kobariški stol and Krasji vrh, just for comparison. And I'm also interested in Rombon besides Svinjak? Finally, if you think these two hills are not suitable for me, please write me some other hill in the area where there is an easy marked path up?

This fear of heights is very subjective, so it's hard to advise, everyone has a bit different . I have some too, but I got to Svinjak without problems. It tried to scare me a bit on the section shown in picture 8, but it wasn't bad. One or two rocky steps where you need to use hands a bit, but they are not exposed.

Leaf through the literature on Krn Mountains or mountains above Planina Razor. Nearby are Skutnik or Zajavor. Bela peč just behind the border. And Bavha with the same starting point. Save Rombon for when you have (I assume) a bit more "mileage". Good luck

Today my wife and I were on Svinjak. Beautiful, well-marked tour, for which it seems almost unbelievable to me that this mountain is only 1,653 m high. In terms of difficulty, I could easily compare it to many two-thousanders without hesitation. I recommend this tour to everyone who will be around Bovec. And an appeal to the Bovec people. In my opinion, they could install fixed cables at some of the most exposed spots just below the summit.

I haven't been up there yet, but every time I drive past below, its name hurts. Who on earth thought of naming it that way. Such a prominent hill, almost a symbol of Bovec, and Svinjak!? Maybe someone who had "piggy" little stamina for its approach named it that? When there's a beautiful alternative name somewhere, Svitnjak. The late Igor mentioned somewhere that it's because it starts to dawn behind it in the morning. Ever since I go to Bovec, I don't call it anything else. For me it's Svitnjak!

Dr. Anton Jeglič told me that it should actually be called Svitnjak, but the recorder understood it differently, and from that Svinjak arose. Svitnjak certainly suits it much better; I've already noticed the sun rising just behind it, illuminating the Bovec basin!
|
|
|
|
| dprapr20. 08. 2018 |
And couldn't anyone correct this "recorder"?: What surprises me more is that people from Bovec are so tolerant of this name and it doesn't bother them. Maybe they even "market" it more with this name. Who knows?
|
|
|
|
| dprapr20. 08. 2018 |
Yes, even on old maps it was still called Sovinjak (map Zahodni Julijci, 1973). Now it's only Svinjak. But both names are certainly surpassed by Svitnjak. It would be interesting to ask older locals what they think of these names.
|
|
|
|
| margu5020. 08. 2018 |
They also renamed Blegaš to Blegoš claiming it sounds too Rovtar-like. Tavčar calls it Blegaš in his sketches. Locals, especially older ones, still call it that. Name recorders were of course not skilled at hearing the locals' dialect pronunciation, so such cases arose. Surely these two are not the only ones.

Another confirmation that this peak was really called Svitnjak, which makes me happy! This claim was given to us by an old local from Bovec in a chance conversation with him about 10 years ago during our tourist stay in that area. He himself didn't know why it's now officially called Svinjak, which he naturally didn't like. Also the late author of the Julian Alps guide Mr. Tine Mihelič wondered where such an unusual name for this peak came from. Also for Prisank in the second half of the last century they re-established this local name instead of just: Prisojnik; for a change only initiative is needed!

There are no safety features anywhere, at least a few years ago there weren't. You help yourself with hands to grip the rocks. Moderately exposed. For someone used to somewhat exposed trails, no problem. For the inexperienced it can be unpleasant, especially downhill since you return the same way. And watch out for snakes that like to sunbathe on those rocks.

From what I've seen, it's a visited peak. Maks and I were up there this year. The path is nicely laid out and in the somewhat steep part, the cables are helpful. When it's wet, it slips on all paths anyway. I'd say, compared to it, Goličica is more demanding. Especially because it's a pathless peak. Especially the first time. Then you already know where and how.

Also visited Slovenian Matterhorn yesterday, have a question: Sign says 1637m, everywhere (mapzs, hribi.net) summit height 1653m. Thanks for info. On path torn peg holding cable, nothing special. Those 2 goats (mom with kid) were around 10am still halfway Otherwise nice path, recommend turning soon from start directly to Čelo - open-air museum (left steeply at first directional sign), as "lower" path uninteresting. Unmarked, trodden and easy to follow.

1637 m is definitely a mistake, perhaps still from Tuma's times, when he recorded this altitude in the book Imenoslovje Julijskih Alp, if I'm not mistaken. God knows why this altitude ended up on the stamp. The exact altitude according to lidar is actually 1652 m.
