Description:
I returned to the Galambra basin, this time on foot, to better see what the Galambra glacier left behind. Where there is now a tiny tongue of dirty snow and a lake, at the beginning of the 1900s there were meters and meters of ice. For several decades this site, over 3,000 meters altitude, was exploited for ice extraction. Detached ice blocks, weighing over 300 kg, were laboriously transported downhill by sleds. From the Salbertrand railway station, the ice was then shipped to Turin, where it was used for preserving food supplies.
