On a sultry summer day, we descend to the Schmittner stream for a refreshing foot bath in the cold mountain water.

Although very picturesque and remote, staying in this deeply incised gorge is not entirely risk-free. Some spots are exposed to rockfall from the overlying rock walls. Moreover, the Schmittner stream drains the vast slopes of the Guggernell high above us, so during rain and thunderstorms, significant amounts of water can quickly rush down the valley. Therefore, we only venture a bit further upstream into the gorge, unaware that after our return in the evening, a massive rain front will actually pour over the region against all forecasts.
