Pyrgos was the ancient capital of Santorini, an inland village of the island, grown at the highest point on a slope of Mount Profitis Elias.
Until 1800 the island's capital, the village center features a medieval castle with Venetian characteristics, Byzantine churches, and medieval houses. The village retains the image of a place of power and prosperity.
