The Neckar is a destination for romantics: Half-timbered houses and medieval towns line its banks, gentle hills and valleys alternate with picturesque vineyards, defiant castles and steep rock gardens. Andrea Grießmann travels the Neckar from Heilbronn to Heidelberg. She visits Germany’s only female tower keeper in Bad Wimpfen, discovers ‘white gold’ in the Bad Friedrichshall salt mine, tries Kässpätzle and sweet ‘student kisses’, and presents some of the most interesting castles and palaces.
